‘Because, in reality, there aren’t any Celtic supporters who think this is the best Celtic side they’ve ever seen’

    ###

Well there is one on here who held that view, though there was a bit of backtracking and wriggling when questioned.

  2. We’ve had a few managers – Lenny, Brendan, Ronnie – who looked rueful after every bruising Euro encounter. But Ange looked well gutted/bereft in those post-match interviews. Like, really taking the failure to heart.

A look back at prev managers’ Euro adventures was my wont: stats on their debut seasons was interesting.

    Lenny – W 10 D 2 L 2

    Brendan – W 3 D 4 L 5

    Angelos – W 6 D 1 L 7

Obv variances in quality of leagues and opponents, but those who dont look back at history/bound to repeat…

My English pal cheekily reminded me today that Leipzig (2009) are the German club equivalent of TRFC !!

Lot of Euro progress in 13 years; alas, we can’t say the same.

  3. QUADROPHENIAN @ 11:11 AM,

Well there seems to be a lot of myth and legend in the Euro stats for managers.

    Lenny’s debut season…

Dumped out of the UCL qualifiers on his first tie to Braga

Got dumped out of the EUL qualifierd on his first tie to Utrecht

    Out of Europe in August.

    If you know your history…

    Hail Hail

This is where we were just 445 days ago.

Ange has had three transfer windows (two that he had any real control over).

With that in mind is it surprising our squad lacks depth and balance at the highest level in club football in the world?

    Takes time.

If everyone was fit, attuned, absorbed into the process and rarin’ to go …

… we’d have more points for sure.

    But we don’t.

So back to work the group has to go.

  5. It is possible for a club from one of the smaller leagues to have a freakishly good start to a Champions League campaign.

Club Brugge are this year’s freakishly good example. 9/9 from a group containing Atletico Madrid, Leverkusen, and Porto.

  6. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 6TH OCTOBER 2022 11:41 AM

I think St Mirren was a bit of a kick in the teeth as well – we’d assumed that we could put out any team and we’d still win, rotating the first team got much harder after that.

In the past under Ange we’ve managed ok with injuries to key players but the squad suddenly looks thin if CCV and Calmac are out

  7. JIMDOM on 6TH OCTOBER 2022 11:43 AM

This is their fifth season in a row in the champions league. They aren’t novices.

  8. QUADROPHENIAN @ 11:40 AM,

    Yes, the impeccable source:))

Actually just checked and your probably quoting Lenny MK IIs first season.

Far enough, well as far as it goes.

As a fellow chairboy once said…

There are lies, damn lies and statistics

A lot of fholk quote WGS’s European record in that matter.

Of course his debut season is a neutral addition P2 W1 L1

Doesn’t really tell the story of getting unceremoniously dumped out the UCL by Artmedia Bratislava though.

    Hail Hail

This is their fifth season in a row in the champions league. They aren’t novices.

    ———————————————————————————————

And Atletico, Leverkusen, and Porto are not exactly CL novices either.

How does the Brugge finances compare with the other three ? That is usually one of your fall back positions when defending the Celtic board.

  10. Ange was right on one thing. Why oh why do our central defenders keep passing back to the goalkeeper, all it does is to let the opposition settle in position.HH

  11. bournesouprecipe on

A ‘doing’, and under pressure from the kick off, we knew the team, we knew the system and it was laid bare in the opening minutes. In the last few weeks players still look good value in terms of what we paid, but not in line with fanciful pre CL internet white noise.

We play a certain way that gives us a goal threat but leaves huge areas that better sides, will expose the same way they have since the Martin O’Neil era relaunched Celtic in Europe. Systems like players come and go, but the results are always Groundhog day.

A philosophy previously mauled in the Europa won’t improve with a. n.

other the defensive midfielder he needs a more pragmatic set up. Inverted, or full back / wing backs are exploited throughout every league in Europe, in the same way as park the bus opposites are torn up in every league against the team with the best players.

We don’t and never will buy Centre Backs and have them handy on the bench in case of injuries, we couldn’t keep the last one because he was a wantaway and on 20k a week. That’s why it’s Stephen Welsh ( who played well ) and it always will be Celtic potential, as backup. Field any two fantasy team CB’s you like past or present and Celtic would still have lost last night. Joe Hart (a tremendous bargain) almost made the identical mistake against Sevco, but he’s in second season of making Arthur Borucesque saves, the ones others can’t reach.

This particular Celtic philosophy was without six players who may otherwise have played last night you can single out your TV and wi fi ‘escape goats’ plead for your personal favourites, and blah, blah, blah the negatives. So long as you turn up for the ‘return leg’ where Ange and his Parkhead post mortem victims might flip the result inside the week, especially if you subscribe to the fine margins theory.

Some people are on the bandwagon they think it’s all over, its not, it begins again in Perth on Saturday 13.00

  12. CHAIRBHOY – soon as you mentioned NL term 1, I guessed the soaraway musta been referencing Neil’s term 2 (which makes for bloody impressive reading with hindsight – esp given the Lazio efforts.)

Good luck to Lenny against Ten Haag’s team!

Indeed; facts are stubborn, statistics pliable ;)

  13. wait till the furore tonight when neil lennons novice Cypriot team play a pragmatic park the bus formation and then get a result against the mighty reds.

    couldnt happen could it ?

  14. Superannuated Fenian on

Bournesouprecipe….Sorry, I couldn’t make head or tail of your last post. The one before seemed to me be perceptive and incisive, addressing all the relevant issues. To see the yawning gaps we leave at the back is frightening and surely must be tackled. Fanandpatriot also, to me, seems to identify a real problem. Ange is aware of it, too. Don’t pass back if you can pass forwards, or even sideways. You’re doing the opposition’s job for them. Especially when your defensive “system” is vulnerable. Can Ange remedy these faults, or is he bound to a noble, praiseworthy ideology which will inevitably result in repeated self-engineered failures against quality opponents? Over to you, Ange…
