Lessons to learn from Pukki mistake

1527

Teemu Pukki’s permanent move to Brondby for a reported £500k is good business for a player who never came close to commanding a regular starting place at Celtic.  While we did well exiting him from Celtic Park but his arrival two years ago is worthy of review.

He came from Schalke as a 23-year-old, having been at Sevilla as a teenager and scoring slightly better than one in two in Finland.  Even his Schalke stats were decent, 8 goals in 7 starts and 30 appearances from the bench, which for a sparingly used young player is around the mark expected.  On paper, Teemu looked a good fit for us, so do we have anything to learn?

For a start, being able to score goals in the Bundesliga does not guarantee you will be able to translate this into an even better scoring rate in Scotland.  We have made similar mistakes when recruiting strikers from Spain in recent seasons.  For all our lack of financial clout, delivering in Scotland is not an easy task.

There is a whole world of potential issues around psychology, motivation and appetite, which I regularly hear cited about players from people in the game.  For the most part, I reckon these are excuses to bridge the unexplained gap between expectation and outcome.  You get the odd indulgent nutcase, but most players have an overwhelming sense of their need to maximise their commercial value by delivering on the park.  I suspect Teemu is no different.

Whatever the reason behind him not fitting at Celtic, the exercise cost us not only the £1.5m net loss on transfer fees, and wages paid, but more importantly the failure to kick on from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in season 2012-13.

There’s a truth in the game which has stood the test of time: only people who watch a player week-in-week-out know his true value.  Schalke fans would have told us things about Teemu which we can tell others about John Guidetti.  John will pick up a club keen to exploit his untapped potential.  A year from now they will be a little wiser.

Our lesson: scouting is the only important part of recruitment, stats, references and YouTube clips don’t count.

Our friends at Magners have offered us two of the new Celtic away jerseys.  It’s another fantastic offer from Celtic’s main sponsor, my thanks to them.  In order to win, answer the following question:

Which team won this year’s Premiership Play-off final 6-1 on aggregate?  Put the answer in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at midnight TONIGHT, so get busy, these are two great prizes and there’s less than a 12 hour window to win them.

And………….. while you’re entering, you might want to kick a pound or two towards our Marys’ Meals Malawi school kitchen appeal.  Thank you.

And #2, if you enter, check your inbox for a response over the weekend.  There’s a home shirt unclaimed from a similar competition last month!

  2. If Roof was a “patsy”, he was a patsy of some of the sites that are read and referenced by some CQNrs

“Watchdog groups that track right-wing extremism say the manifesto reflects the language found in white supremacist forums online and dovetails with what has been said about Mr. Roof thus far — that he had self-radicalized, and that he did not belong to a particular hate group. “It’s clear that he was extremely receptive to those ideas,” said Mark Pitcavage, the director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. “At the same time, he does not have a sophisticated knowledge of white supremacy.”

The icon for the browser tab on Mr. Roof’s website is an Othala rune, an ancient symbol appropriated by the Nazis that remains common among neo-Nazi groups.

Mr. Roof was the latest in what watchdog groups say is a growing group of lone-wolf extremists. According to a study released in February by the Southern Poverty Law Center, about 70 percent of the 60 recent domestic terrorism attacks reviewed were conducted by people acting alone.

The writings on Mr. Roof’s website show a fixation with black-on-white crime, which is common on white supremacy sites, said Heidi Beirich, the director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project.

“They demonize blacks to position themselves as victims, and offer that as proof of why they need their own state,” she said.

In one photograph posted on the website, Mr. Roof is shown posing with wax figures of slaves. In others, he posed with a handgun that appears to be a .45-caliber Glock. He had a .45-caliber Glock in his car when he was arrested Thursday, the police said.

The website’s links contain several passages of long racist rants, in which he said Hispanics are enemies, and “Negroes” have lower I.Q.s and low impulse control. The manifesto praises segregation and says the author’s reading of “hundreds” of slave narratives indicates that almost all slaves gave positive accounts of their lives. The manifesto uses defamatory terms for blacks, whom he accused of being “stupid and violent” with “the capacity to be very slick.” It laments white flight, and suggested that the whites should instead stay behind in cities and fight.

Criticisms are also levied at Jews, but Asians are praised for being racists and potential allies. Mr. Brown said his friend’s transformation appeared to have occurred after he left Columbia, S.C., for nearby Lexington. Records show he switched schools in 2007. “He wasn’t putting on Facebook ‘I hate black people. I am going to shoot up a church,’ ” Mr. Brown said.”

Murder is murder, is it not?

The victims of the drugged up murderer are now seated at the right hand of the Father, in my humble opinion, obviously.

Horrible, horrible crime, particularly so being a Christian person and pacifist myself.

Should all murderers be condemned to rot in hell though, or only some murderers?

  8. I accused you only of accessing some of the same self-referencing sites which specialise in specious reasoning.

The gun nuts are advocating that the CIA made all those shooters and bombers at Sandy Hook, Carolina and Boston etc; do what they did. Drugged them and made them do this. Somehow co-ordinated and choreographed all their friends to say that he had an interest in these areas, made him plaster confederate and KKK insignia. All based on what?- a belief that it must have been so because our people don’t do that but their people do. Deeply, deeply unconvincing. You can believe that all those white supremacist groups are put up jobs and CIA fronts or you can recognise the line of continuity form Nathan Bedford Forrest through D.C Stephenston and David Duke and beyond. From before Obama’s great grandparents lived. But no, this was a put up job by the Demoocrats, the CIA and the Moslems.

Information from Mr. Zolna?? Is he racist?

A man who said Obama is not African American- he is Muslim-Arab.

He should get his “black ass” to Charleston.

Who has a problem with Obama having white servants at the white house.

If he is not racist then he has an obsession with the terms black and white.

I am off to my bed now. I have to state that I find it distasteful to even have to debate this issue because the evidence for anything other than radicalised white supremacist is less than flimsy, and the evidence for him being radicalised as a white supremacist is strong.

I have said this before about conspiracy theorising (and I accept that many powerful groups conspire in plain sight) is that they are easy to believe if you ignore all the contrary evidence from friends and family and instead invest high levels of credence in the “evidence” of people who were not close, who were not informed, and who have a track record of seeing everything through the same lens which explains everything to them in terms of the ideology they already believed.

  10. Accompanied by a picture of Dylan Roof, here is a typical text from one of the many mad sites that won’t accept reality. Not many will be convinced by this rhetoric.

The article has a picture of Dylan Roof with his racist insignia. The text states:-

“On the left, what do you see? It was an inept Photoshop job.

Why would the 21-year old bowlcut-haired queer-looking vidya neet upload the photo of himself to Facebook with the scrowl on his face?

What’s the point of presenting yourself in a sad angry and dejected self on Facebook to communicate with, find and make friends?

Dylan’s Facebook page was just created this year with plenty of blacks as friends, many of which said they never even interacted with him.

Who TOOK the photo of Dylan with the scrowled and dejected look while wearing the jacket with Photoshopped-in patches?

Did he use the self-timer on the digital camera that requires the photo be at the eye level which requires an expensive tripod or a platform to hold the self-timer camera?

Why the patches for the former apartheid-era flags of South Africa and Rhodesia even though Dylan is only 21 years old?

Why would he care about these “formerly” white-run countries in Africa with the display of the former flag designs?

Why did Dylan ‘decide to target’ the black church? To maximize outrage among the niggers wanting to kill whitey in the new race war for the lulz for the conspiring monsters within the US and shadow governments?

Is it psyops exercise gone awry with mysterious smokescreen handlers (FBI, MOSSAD, secret blackops working for US Government deigning to nullify and abolish 2nd Amendment as they tried to with the Sandy Hook hoax) on the sideline watching?

Raised outrage that make a perfect propaganda coup for the government bureaucrats using the liberal media to scare the populace into surrendering “muh rights to keep and bear arms”?

Is Dylan a “dumb patsy tool” drugged up on psychotropic drugs that drive him insane to commit the massacre, with no finger pointed at Big Pharma, FDA and doctors for corruption, malice and greed that endanger public safety with SSRI drugs that change brain chemistry?

Lastly, why does Dylan look like a fag with the silly bowlcut hair?”

Seriously, that’s it! That’s all they have. A few red herrings and a strong ability to disbelieve evidence based on nothing other than it conflicts with pre-exisiting beliefs. Every one of the questions they pose has an easy answer- some among them might even have enough imagination to work out what it is- but they present these banal questions as if they put serious holes in the facts that people who knew Dylan Roof, knew he was interested in these things and had received contact with like minded people.

Honestly, I despair sometimes. Scepticism is healthy when we conside r the powers that be and the actions they are prepared to take in defending their interests. But, unless, you are prepared to turn that sceptical outlook on your own values and beliefs and see what is weak and unevidenced there, then you have a one eyed set of prejudices and bigotries rather than a tested set of tried and true values.

    I need my sleep.

The source of your views and views very like them, is easily obtained. The meme of “drugged up patsy” is doing the rounds on various sites, none of which bothers too much with evidence.

Rather than complaining that I know what I cannot know, it would be less disengeneous to actually link to the sites that you are getting your info from and letting others make up their own minds. When people see what else those guys are saying, about race relations and a conspiracy against the right and the gun bearers, I have confidence that the decent majority will reject the view.

But first, you have to be honest and say where you came by the views.

I will catch this up in the morning.

  13. The lessons go back further than Pukki. Scouting IS part of the answer but so is team design and statistics do have a role.

Not only Pukki, but Bangura, Balde, Boerrigter et al. Going further back we failed with a number of big fee signings from big leagues. Thinking of Gravesen and Jarosik in particular.

Not sure of the answer, but that fee of around £2m to £3m is obviously a tricky segment of the market that we really must master.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to sue TV corporations that show live football for “bringing the game into disrepute”?

Because it certainly seems to me that “live” football is no longer broadcast as a sporting contest, but rather another distraction from the real world (ergo reality).

Oh, BTW, the “king” is dead! In…..The……..Water.

  17. Interesting thing about Sutton and Hartson were that they were both ‘impaired’ at the time of purchase. Sutton had a tragic season at Chelsea and Hartson had failed medicals and had weight issues. Both were projects of a sort. The fees (and wages) paid were competitive in an EPL context.

We can’t do this now – I think the fee level has to balance risk and return – maybe chipping a bit more money at the problem might bring a return…. but maybe not. We need to master that ‘project’ part of the market that such fees buy.

Buying a £6 million , Sutton, Hartson,Lennon, type player from EPL would cost us around £14 million plus over a four year contract in fees and wages – two would amount to £30 million, with no real sell on value.

Remember neither of the above three moved on for money.

Re Charleston – we see these extremists/nutters burning flags etc, it is what extremists do – Paisley was the scene only a few months ago, with SNP councilors and zealots burning documents negotiated by all sides – same Nationalistic behaviour – White supremacists hate blacks and Scots supremacists (Salmond’s Team Scotland) hate the English

They also hate our kind, but have not got round to us yet because they need to con the numpties among us out of their votes first – but if they ever get independence, our turn will come rest assured – SNP were, together with the Church of Scotland, the original ‘Famines Over It’s Time To Go Home’ mob, long before the huns.

  24. Mick1888. Making a mistake on a striker once or twice can be forgiven for being unlucky. But when it goes on an on it is incompetent. Don’t know in and out of other duds, but pukki I know before he joined us , he lacked pace , hid in games , no effort , and a waste of a jersey , only played against smaller teams and that came from a Schalke/Celtic fan I know who watched him

Now when he came to Celtic , even Paul 67 said his pace was important , especially in Europe. Who fed him this tosh
