Look under the bonnet at Killie

647

There is no outrage louder than moral outrage, so I ignored this week’s stupidity by Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston, adding volume seemed moot, but if you look below the bonnet of this decision you’re likely to find the real story.  Kilmarnock FC is in a critical condition.

They need your money this week, probably even more than they need the goodwill of their own fans.  Mr Johnston’s most damaging folly has not been to offer Celtic fans a better deal than his own club’s supporters, it has been the failure to address the club’s financial imperative over a long number of years.  Like another club I can think of, getting cash in the door is the only game in town, as a failure to do so would bring enormous consequences.

It is the Killie fans who suffer as “Speaking as a solicitor” Johnston clings to what passes for power at a busted flush.  Don’t apologise for this week’s self-harming insult, instead be contrite about the actions which brought about the problem.

    Masty,

No bother maybe I worded my post wrong about the display! No harm done.. Hail hail

  2. The other day I suggested that perhaps lots of teams had looked at Finnbogason but shyed away was they felt he might only be so successful due to the way Herenveen play and maybe wouldn’t be quite so good playing a different style of football.

He’s now got more goals than the rest of his team combined. So they’re either right or he really is going to be one of the greater goalscorers in his generation.

“Of the 12 clubs in the top division in Scotland, 10 are solvent and cash positive.”

Many 10 year olds with a piggy bank are solvent and cash positive. Both David Murray and Craig Whyte only needed to be cash positive to the tune of £1 in order to buy Rangers.

” Of all the countries in UEFA, Scottish top flight football has most embraced financial prudence, and done so considerably earlier, albeit the imperative to do so was born of individual necessity rather than collective virtue. ”

I don’t disbelieve you but there is no accompanying data for that assertion. We have seen Airdrie, Gretna and Rangers liquidated in recent times and we have seen Motherwell (2002-4), Dundee (twice in 2003-4 & 2010-11), Morton (2000-1), Clydebank (2000), Airdrieonians (2002), Livingston (twice in 2004-5 and again in 2009), Gretna (2008), Clach (2009-now), Rangers (2012-??) Dunfermline (2013-??) and (Hearts 2013-??) all have Administration events or worse. That is 11 clubs and 13 admin events leading to 3 liquidations.

Now some took place a decade ago but 7 have occurred in the last 5 years. It may come out statistically as a smaller proportion of total senior clubs but that is due to Scotland having an inordinate number of senior clubs relative to population in the first place, which is also part of the problem. We have a very fat tail wagging a thin scabby dug.

“The clubs are not bankrupt as you put it. They are (relatively) skint. There’s a world of difference.”

True, they live but they are not a company that a thriving go-ahead club would want to keep.

“Related to the above, Scotland is a marginal consumer market, and as such, does not have the critical media mass to matter to the buyers of content. If you want to be number one in the UK media market, you need to be number one in England, and therefore the English game is the battleground for rights. Scotland is no more relevant to media rights buyers than the East Midlands, indeed, less so.

The logical step for Scotland is to acquire scale – media mass – by joining up with those nations similarly marginalised. I have written about it at quite some length previously and won’t bore you with a repeat, but a counter-balance to the media weight and thus the football gravity of the big leagues in Europe is long overdue. However, as with earlier ideas such as the Atlantic League, new ones such as the Balkans federating, Russia and Ukraine merging, the Czechs and Slovaks similarly, there remains deep resistance within the game at large and no progress.”

I agree with the above but voluntary changes by associate clubs or FAs are not going to be immediately attractive to TV and sponsor markets. Meanwhile the fat cats get fatter and the super rich corner the market.

It is logistically easier for Celtic to gain entry to a pre-existing richer league and, unfortunately, the EPL is nearest,, than it is for several conflicted FAs to overcome their differences and form an agreed new league structure.

    I don’t particularly want Celtic in the EPL or English lower league but it may be the only offer on the table when the juncture comes. I pray for some more big clubs in big leagues to go bust to accelerate a fairer market for football for clubs such as ourselves, Anderlecht, Benfica, Ajax etc;

“On the matter of youth development, again related to the above, all top clubs in Scotland now have fairly extensive and effective talent development programmes. All of these clubs, with the exception of Celtic, find that their investment in these programmes makes little discernible difference to either their business or their football team because they cannot afford to keep the kids they develop beyond their 2nd season as a professional. The financial return from selling a Fyvie or a Fraser aged 20 barely pays for the structure that developed them, while the team never gets the impact of their talent as it matures through the early 20s into football performance.”

That is true and a simple change to the minimal value set for stealing a player developed by another club should be set up to age 21, to more than compensate this sum lost.

After all, I believe students can be bound to an employer who pays for their tuition (Armed Services) unless they pay back the costs incurred. A similar rule initiated to justify the cost and preserve the future existence of club youth academies would surely get widespread support, if there was a will.

“Something that is within the gift of the clubs and supporters of the game in Scotland can be done to address this. That something needn’t require seismic change in the wider playing environment or media market to effect meaningful and positive change.”

OK what is it and how would it help us?

“We are a little too apt sometimes to view matters solely through the lens of our own club. Perhaps, if we reground ourselves as Football Supporters rather than Celtic Fans, we might find that what’s good for the Game in Scotland is pretty good for us too.”

I love football but without getting too hippyish about my neighbours. The aims of other clubs are to be more successful in Scottish competitions. For them to achieve that end, we would need to be less successful in Scottish competitions over a longer period. I cannot see what is in it for us.

You hint that the 80s and previous periods were a golden age that may return. I still see it as a suicide note because, without tied contracts, without TV and sponsor steroid money and profile, Scottish clubs are not any more likely to be challenging at significantly higher levels in Europe than are Polish clubs, Slovak clubs, Bulgarian or Belgium clubs.

The Stone Age is past, The Iron Age Gone, The Steam age is comically old. We must evolve with the changing environment or die like dinosaurs who are trying to recapture the climate of their youth.
