Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

  1. I nearly cracked up when I started reading your reviews as I had read the programme was starting at 11.15.

Checked the timetables. It was shown at 9 on BBC Scotland, & will be shown on BBC NI at 11.15 & BBC England & Wales at 11.20.

Well, I didn’t get to Lisbon, but got areal bonus.

I’ve been given a ticket for the Lisbon Lions Tribute at the Hydro – with the full bhoona. Meet at the Crowne Plaza for a reception and meal with the official party; then the gig; then a wee party at the Crowne Plaza afterwards.

It’s not too shabby and I reckon it’ll be a fantastic night!

Even after 50 years the story of Glasgow Celtic in Lisbon lives and breathes with a spirit that is timeless.

That was a fitting tribute. Great TV

What’s particularly pleasing about those pictures appearing all over Glasgow is that, in all likelihood they are being put up by Celtic fans whose parents weren’t yet born in 67, this is what in means to be Celtic!

Bhoys – thank you for the anniversary wishes – now looking forward to the great day (but whisper that)

Babasonic – I still shed a tear when I re read my Izzi post – it came from somewhere very deep and far away – maybe travelling with Greenock CSC left me with a soul.

I can’t be there on Friday but great to know that my club are so closely involved.

The men on the ticket are the guys who I remember as a wee boy in the bus.

    Checking out for another greet.

    Beautiful beautiful days bhoys

  9. jinky redstar,

the greenock bus passing woodhall terrace, to a sea of green and white tenements,

many greenoakians told me this as their favorite memory of the port when the celtic won a cup final ,

    Currently watching the final:

25 minutes in and we are 1-0 down. Inter are quite happy to let us go at them and we have been decent on the ball. We need to test their keeper more.

I’m still hopeful we can get a result.

  18. The bloated beast that is Manchester Utd lifts a trophy that means nothing; other than a route into the Champions (hahaha) League.

A club that has spent more on players in the last 3 years than Ajax has since the 50’s.

    Embarrassing.

Suppose it makes the Lions achievements more remarkable.

  19. The report of Patrick Roberts signing is premature. It is from a link on the Celtic website from when he extended his contract.

  25. Lá Fhéile Lisbon.

Congratulations to all at Celtic, old and young, for their recent, and not so recent, victorious endeavours.

You have created a special place for us, where, no matter our position on the planet, we are one Green and White entity, all of us caught up in the occasion, and celebrating joyfully.

Best wishes to all Celts on our own International Lisbon Lion’s Day.

What a time to be alive!

    Parkheadcum….,

I agree that some of the footage was from the ’50s, but that was the era that the Lions, like myself, grew up in. Therefore, I feel it was relevant.

I enjoyed it very much , on different levels.

One being the documenting of the ’66-67 season, but also that it captured the Glasgow of my young adulthood and the early days of courting my wife.

She was a young student nurse from Donegal, working in Stobhill Hospital and a special night out for us was a gammon steak in Reo Stakis in Hope Street.

Tonight took us back to those days.
