Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

The bloated beast that is Manchester Utd lifts a trophy that means nothing; other than a route into the Champions (hahaha) League.

A club that has spent more on players in the last 3 years than Ajax has since the 50’s.

    Embarrassing.

Suppose it makes the Lions achievements more remarkable.”

A very good post. I have no time for Ajax (fans seem to be a particularly nasty bunch), but United are just horrible. Tens of millions spent every year and they seem unable to play even a remotely entertaining brand of football.

After events of the last few days, it’s a result which will help bring people together, and provoke some smiles, and you can’t grudge them that.

But purely in football terms, Man United under Mourinho are an abomination.

  2. Ascension Thursday of course ans Mass tonight, in St Leonard’s EK, is fae six tae seven ;-)

  6. I watched the programme alone but as part of the biggest family I know.

Tears gently streaming down my face.

Wondering at how a dozen West of Scotland Bhoys from the most humble of backgrounds came to change my life’s journey two years before I was even born…..

This is what it means to be blessed in Celtic

All the best to the Celtic family. Hail! Hail!

  9. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

Good Morning from a sunny Lisboa.

The significance of our presence here in Lisbon was summed up by a Taxi drver last night when he opined “You people are crazy!”

When asked to explain he said ” Lisbon is full of Celtic fans. They are in Hennessey’s bar laughing, drinking, singing, dancing and it is hard to understand. If Celtic were playing here, then I could understand that, but to come all this way just to party ad watch no game of football whatsoever…………. no you are just crazy. Crazy, crazy crazy!”

Throughout the course of yesterday I heard native Lisboans shout “Celtic; Celtic” or “Lions of Lisbon — 1967! and they would then give you the thumbs up.

For reasons that are very hard to explain properly, Celtic fans own a tiny wee slice of this city. Not in a physical or proprietorial sense, but in the sense that the local people here, whether they be in search of trade for the taxi’s, restaurants or hotels or whatever, all know to link Celtic to this city and this city to Celtic.

Many many of them clearly know exactly why Celtic fans are here on this day. They know the year the cup was won, they know the name of the manager and some of the players and they know all about the crazy, mad, singng and dancing fans that descended on the seven hills of Lisbon 50 years ago today.

Until that day, there was no established link between Lisbon and Scotland in general. Yet, today simply because f a football match, whenever you say the word Lisbon, with a certain timbre in your voice, a certain wistfulness, and a certain reverence, the very uttering of the word shows that you are a follower of the team in green and white.

Last night, I met several people who were here 50 years ago and who had decided to come back again 50 years later. One man was with his son and grandson, and when I showed him a photo of the massed crowd in 1967 he was clearly visible and his son could name many of the people round about him.

“So, why have you come back?” I asked.

The answer was both as logical and illogical an explanation as you could ever ask for:

    “Because I just had to!”

Whatever happened 50 years ago today, those events changed people, would impact on their children and grandchildren and it changed the face of this city which now recognises that Celtic are a significant part of their tourist market, their historical market, and the make up of this city.

By even being here and celebrating in the numbers that are here we are perpetuating that legend.

No other football club in the history of European football has ever had numbers such as these come to a city and celebrate an anniversary.

Throughout, the taxi driver, whose family hail from Goa in India, constantly smiles and provides his cheery and friendly observations on the number of Celtic fans he sees in and around the city.

He shakes his head ……. and beams “Crazy!”

    Hoopy Lisbon Day everyone!

Well done to Mouldy and the cycling team – outstanding effort ( mainly seated ;-)

Bhoys in Lisbon having a great time and not jealous at all grrrr :-)

Fantastic production for Beeb last night, some wonderful images of Glasgow and our Young Lions.

Best line from Wee Bertie: Jinky said to me “they (inter) all look like movie stars” and Bertie replied ” aye ….but can they PLAY?” I’m willing to bet that put some magic dust into Jinky’s spirit …. not that he needed it mind! Wise words from an absolute master of the game.

We never realy replaced Bertie … I hope Brendan can this season!

Noticed that Hazel Irvine was one of the producers…well done to all concerned. I’m guessing it wasn’t a Sports Department offering :@)

Received two Jock Stein T shirts and books yesterday. Going to make someone very happy today… Thanks to the smart efficiency of CQN Books. Well done to those guys too!!

Heading along to the Lomond Suite, pre-Hydro gig, tonite. Hoping to add a few Lions signatures to my Lisbon programme… really excited!

Hope everyone over in Lisbon is having a great time.

Haven’t watched the BBC docu yet but will when I get a chance. By all accounts I’ll need a handkerchief.

Didn’t watch much of the EL Final last night as I can’t stand either club – one has nasty bunch of fans, the other is just a tourist attraction rather than a football club.

Last night I dreamt that we lost on the Final on Saturday. However, I also recently dreamt that I won the lottery and Labour won the election, so apply your own measurement of salt as desired and then get your money on a Celtic win to make this the best season in my lifetime (thus far…)

P.S. Lisbon dudes, remember to hydrate regularly, wear a hat and plenty of sunscreen, and don’t talk to any strange men…

alright just try the hat one….

  16. Hail Hail to the Lions who are here and those who have gone, to the supporters there at the time and those there now and to all Celtic supporters enjoy the 50th celebrations.

  17. RIP all the victims of the atrocity in Manchester and to the families of all who have lost someone or been affected by this ,my thoughts are with you all, most recently Eilidh from Barra so guttingly sad.

  18. It was fifty years ago today

  20. On this morning, 50 years ago, before going to school, 9 year-old me was reading through the football pages of the papers my dad had bought earlier.

I remember a double-page colour spread in one of them with both teams/ squads, pictures I had on my bedroom wall for years.

Then, all I remember is the deflation in our packed living room when the penalty was scored, and the elation when Tommy and Stevie scored. Too young to appreciate the achievement properly, but not to realise that something really special had just happened.

And a special thanks today to Jim Mac, my dad’s mate, who took me to my first game in late ’66, a 6-1 Joe McBride-led skelping of St Johnstone. A jungle I’d return to so often over the years.

    Feliz Día de Lisboa!

  21. Good Morning CQN

0 days to go. This is the day.

The weather today in Lisbon will be Sunny with the temperature reaching 85. No rain is forecast but there is expected to be some evidence of moisture on the faces of people during the afternoon in the vicinity of Estadio Nacional.

  22. Are the CQNers in Portugal up bright and breezy this morning or are they having Lisbon Lie-ins?

My memory of that night 50 years ago was being taken with my siblings by my mum to my grans to give my dad peace to watch the game with his pal. We mustve been brought back too early cos i remember my dad screaming and jumping and apparently I just burst into tears asking what was wrong.

He still slags me about it. He is 85 still going strong thank god ( was once the subject of a BRTH tale) and loving every moment if the anniversary. I plan to be in the estadio nacional myself in july and looking forward to whatsapping him my pic on the turf.
