Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

  1. I have no reason to doubt the story regarding Big Jock. The way he was treated at the end of his managerial tenure at Celtic was an absolute disgrace.Thinking he was going upstairs,to be offered the “Celtic Pools”job, shows the thinking of the board at the time.An insult to the greatest manager ever to walk through the doors of Celtic Park.To his eternal credit,he kept his council on this disgraceful stab in the back.

Really enjoyed the Lisbon lions documentary, close to tears at times but overwhelmingly feeling is one of pride and connectedness with the Celtic family.

Was that CQNs own winning captain who got a credit in the end credits?

  3. Writing this with a wee tear in my eye but just have to say a big big thank you to the BBC. That was the best hour of TV I have enjoyed for many many a year. Brilliant stuff.

  4. 50 shades of green on

    Brilliant lions tribute.

How am I gonna sleep now after watching that.

  5. Excellent documentary on BBC Scotland. Not just the stories of the team and the supporters who went to Lisbon but also the background of what Glasgow was like back in 67. I’m too young to remember back then ;-)

Following on fro the Lisbon lions documentary, wouldn’t it be fitting if the walk up the Celtic way had statues of all the players who played a part in getting to the final then winning it.

  7. That was quite a splendid programme to commemorate the 50th anniversary of winning the Big Cup.

Just watched the Lions documentary, but didn’t see much of it – blinded with tears from about 2 minutes in. I was struck by some of the match commentary, so pro Celtic. Pretty fired up for Saturday now!

  9. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Rather underwhelmed with that programme to be honest. A lazy, cheap and predictable production by the BBC. So many more compelling and emotive ways to tell the story of Lisbon.

    What a missed opportunity.

Excellent documentary- could easily have. Just rehashed the goals or highlights.

This was brave, starting with Glasgow warts and all and ending in sheer emotion. – greeting doesn’t begin to describe me- on my 29th wedding anniversary as well!

  11. That was a very enjoyable programme on the BBC about 67, difficult not to get emotional when you think about what the Lions overcame, what they did and how they loved doing it for the club and the fans. Amazing group of people with the wives playing their part in the success.

  12. WOW – so emotional, humbled and proud after watching that.

    Wee Ten-thirty absolute star.

Funniest bit- the priest talking about getting tickets thru Titbits and stopping at Cardiff for the carry-out.

    Magic stuff.

Well done to Cumbernauld on getting the result they needed ! Did your bhoy play tonight ? Interesting on Saturday a point a piece suits Girvan & Yoker ! HH !

  14. Actually, I don’t think Glasgow was as bad as the programme made out in 67. I remember from about 60 onwards they were already knocking down much of Parkhead. A lot of my class were allowed out of school at 3.45 to get the buses which were taking them out to Easterhouse, because, while they had put up houses in the schemes, they hadn’t built schools or anything else. I feel much of the footage was of the 50s.

    Park Rd 67.

    Yes he played.

I think if it wasn’t so crucial, he wouldn’t have, he won the penalty with 10 mins to go, the keeper took him out, the kind of tackle anywhere else on the pitch that would be a red card. Anyway Cumbernauld scored the pen to make it 3.1.

Incidentally his name is Paddy and when his name was announced away at Petershill some of the crowd booed him. He better get used to it Larkhall and Cambuslang Rangers have just been promoted to the league. Larkhall fans were singing the Billy Boys at home to St Rochs last week.

Yep it was Winning Captains who was credited!

That was a superb programme and a wonderful story told wonderfully well. NO BOBBY DOES IT PETTA, don’t know where you are coming from to be honest? What else were you expecting?

For me it brought all the emotions of that night back; although only 7 I remember it vividly and the raw emotion involved in such a wonderful occasion.

I didn’t appreciate the magnitude of the achievement at the time, but most certainly do now!

  21. That was beautifull. I love you Celtic. From King Kenny to Davie Provan to the majestic Paul McStay to Fergus and the King of Kings I do love you. And of course don’t or get the Lisbon Lions. We are special.

The tribute on Saturday was special too. well done to the “North Curve”.

Roll on Saturday, I’ll be in the Craigmarloch Lodge with the Bhoys.

I was too young for Lisbon but that night has shaped my life as a Celtic supporter.

Nothing can change our glorious past.

That is what it means to Celtic, well done BBC Scotland.

My young cousin just sent me some pics of walls in Glasgow that have been rather magnificently adorned with posters of Big Billy holding aloft the European Cup.He says they’re appearing ‘everywhere’ in his words.Any of our City bhoys noticed anything?

The poster’s a thing of beauty.

  25. Great seeing Jimmy with his Jock Stein t-shirt on the Lisbon Lions programme.

I got a call tonight from one of the Lions who was complaining about the nature of the official functions and saying that he is looking forward to be left alone from all that on Friday night to be among the Celtic supporters down at the Greenock CSC.

In the Heat of Lisbon on tonight’s show was brilliant. What a support Celtic has. The standard of the team many vary over the years but the support?

In Lisbon, the Centenary Season, Seville and now.

My boy watched the UEFA Cup Final rather than the Lions show, came in and said both teams totally beatable by Celtic.

There’s a media research company that has compiled a top ten of Football sites in the UK. They monitor traffic volumes, quality and quantity of articles, social media interaction, quality of design and photography etc

CQN is the only Scottish site in the top ten. Against big budget media companies we got 7th spot in this prestigious top 10.

Nice wee name check from the BBC.

Hope you can get to Greenock CSC on Friday.

Congratulations to you and your good lady. Great night to have an anniversary, just before another anniversary!

You’re right – a very emotional programme, even Mrs Emeraldbee was choking at times (and not when I was trying to get her to stop asking questions!)

Brought back many memories, including the Vojvodina game which was my dad’s final game at Celtic Park after I’d persuaded him that he had to come and see this very special team. Nearly getting lifted off the ground when Big Billy scored at the end was an experience too far for him.

  28. What a terrific documentary by BBC Scotland by way of tribute to the Lions. Thank God I recorded it. Half the time I was blinded by tears yet throughout filled with pride knowing we had these wonderful people representing Celtic – players, Big Jock, and the fans.

Don’t say this often but a huge congratulations to the BBC. Thought the sentiment and balance showed what we are all about perfectly.

Come on, Celtic . Get the treble to thank our magnificent Lions.
