Lower the Union Jack and raise the White Flag of Surrender

537

As Motherwell won their semi-final yesterday against the second most expensively assembled team in Scotland, the penny began to drop with the last hold-outs that Brother Pedro will be remembered as little more than an expensive stop-gap in the attempt to stop Celtic winning 20-in-a-row.

Let’s be clear: Pedro is not in the top two managers in the league, in fact, Celtic, Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Motherwell, Hibs, Hearts, Kilmarnock and Dundee all have demonstrably better bosses. But there was a reason he was appointed late last season, despite better candidates being (under)employed in Perthshire.

Appointing a competent, provincial, manager, like Tommy Wright, would be an acknowledgement that Newco had no illusions of competing with Celtic. In that role, Wright would out-perform Hibs, Motherwell and St Johnstone, and give Aberdeen a run for their money, but he is not an alchemist.

There is a difference when you appoint an exotic as manager, even an incompetent one. Few potential season ticket customers know what you really have with an exotic. He could be incompetent, but you can equally hope that he turns out to be a truly great appointment, with access to hitherto unexploited talent.

There was no point in Newco giving the job to a reliable but unspectacular candidate like Wright. This club needs to propel itself into a position where it competes against an elite Celtic team, and can navigate its way through four Europa League qualification rounds.

If it lowers the Union Jack and raises the White Flag to mark Surrender of league aspirations, its self-image would be destroyed. I could debate the commercial viability of an aspirational Newco with you all day (fanciful), but it appears that even the decision makers at Ibrox regard the viability of a subservient Newco as untenable.

The club faces Hobson’s Choice. Throw money it cannot afford at strategies selected BECAUSE correct due diligence is impossible, or downsize to a point they know will have a negative impact on ticket sales and future income.

20 years ago this week, Rangers beat Dunfermline 7-0 and were hot favourites to win 10-in-a-row, but the business model had a fundamental weakness: the club were haemorrhaging cash. You can debate whether the subsequent liquidation and newco phoenix club is the same or different to the Rangers some of us are old enough to remember.

What is irrevocably true is that Newco is unrecognisable from Rangers in one hugely important aspect: it will not win the league. Ever.

  1. TIMGREEN,

well said Sir….though I doubt you’ll get any sort of comprehensible response, if any….you should mibbe have added that the old firm died with the continuing liquidation of rangers and that Celtic have since refused to use the term ;-))

My post mentioned many, many facets of the Celtic support and those who deserve credit for this award.

There were several references to those who weren’t actually there.

  4. Further to my post at 11.38, I see on here (PARANOIDBYEXPERIENCE on 23RD OCTOBER 2017 11:27 PM) that SkySports are also giving it big with the “Old Firm” label to dilute theimact of the FIFA award. I can’t launch a complaint against them as they only accept comments from subscribers and I cancelled my sub in the summer due to their pathetic and biased coverage of Scottish football.

If you still subscribe to Sky as a Celtic fan, the key question is WHY?? but, if , for reasons that escape me, you persist then, please, challenge them on their antiquated use of the “Old Firm” label. It is used deliberately and persistently to try to diminish us by association with whatever version of the Ibrox mob.

  10. James Forest sums it up well. Copy and keep!

I cannot say this enough times; the club they believed in never existed. It didn’t have the money it was spending. The whole thing was an illusion. They were funded by bank debt and then by tax fraud. It had been two decades since it played by the same rules as everyone else, yet those fans expected that a NewCo fresh in the world would be able to operate at that level and not only challenge us but actually overhaul us.

Ultimately, clubs get the fans they deserve…Celtic–greatest club in the world–Celtic fans–world’s best (99% of the time)……then there’s—nah! I’m not going to say it…you know what I mean…It’s been a painful couple of days for them…

    Goodnight Tims…

  13. HT,

on strict liability…..even if we supported it…..and had a solid cordon of stewards around the ground….it’d still be impossible to keep a determined nutter from breaching the cordon. As for fences….mibbe topped with barbed wire….that would do the trick….or mibbe a 15 foot deep exclusion moat.. It’s like me n my friend discussed….you can take all the precautions you want but a determined burglar will always break in….you need to make it impossible for them to escape with yer goods…..there’s yer deterrent….;-))

  15. It’s fantastic news that Celtic fans have been voted the best in the world. Our MSM cannot bear to report it in a positive light. I’m not so happy that some are comparing us with the hordes despite the daily insistence on here that there is no “Old Firm” and that we are a stand alone club.

Let’s enjoy the moment and the recognition from everywhere outside Scotland that our club has the best fans in the world. The BBC’s report on the award is pathetic.

Celtic should have sent someone other than Bankier to accept the award, given his previous remarks.

ITV down here was showing the FIFA Awards.

    Obviously not in Scotland,then.

    Sorry for the bum steer.

  19. Bankier ?

    BANKIER ?

    Aye, good yin.

Reminds me of when yon ither PLC chancer, Brian Quinn, sabotaged the presentation of the, Seville 2003 Uefa award on the Celtic Park pitch from the, Villareal supporters rep.

BQ had been outed in public about his, tunnel digging phone texts about, “Our esteemed manager”(his words) referring to the publicity about the clubs from England who coveted the services of Martin O’Neill.

BQ put himself in front of the fans, due to his bad publicity, after he’d been outed, and by doing so, he ruined the presentation, causing the fans to boo him.

And there are folk going around, who would have you believe that, self preservationist directors were, Kelly’s & White’s……aye.

Maybe these Celtic PLC executives are actually, dwarfed when the Celtic supporters are being served by a manager who has the requisite stock to hold the office of, Celtic FC team manager ?

Maybe that’s why it took, 30,000 of the best fans in the world, to empty their seats, before these PLC chancers like, Banker, etc, stopped disrespecting the best fans in the world, by cheating the fans respect, with the recruitment of a line of puppet managers, whilst the Bankiers etc, got fat drinking the gravy of the pub team environment.

Anyway,….well done Celtic supporters. Thank you, Lisbon Lion’s.

Nothing cuts deeper than, seeing tens of thousands of, innocent, well meaning, faithful Celtic supporters, being cheated by those who are {trusted} to, custodially govern Celtic FC.

Scooby Doo! pyjama comments, aren’t a dig at you, their a warning flag, from me, to you, that your being done!
