Lower the Union Jack and raise the White Flag of Surrender

537

As Motherwell won their semi-final yesterday against the second most expensively assembled team in Scotland, the penny began to drop with the last hold-outs that Brother Pedro will be remembered as little more than an expensive stop-gap in the attempt to stop Celtic winning 20-in-a-row.

Let’s be clear: Pedro is not in the top two managers in the league, in fact, Celtic, Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Motherwell, Hibs, Hearts, Kilmarnock and Dundee all have demonstrably better bosses. But there was a reason he was appointed late last season, despite better candidates being (under)employed in Perthshire.

Appointing a competent, provincial, manager, like Tommy Wright, would be an acknowledgement that Newco had no illusions of competing with Celtic. In that role, Wright would out-perform Hibs, Motherwell and St Johnstone, and give Aberdeen a run for their money, but he is not an alchemist.

There is a difference when you appoint an exotic as manager, even an incompetent one. Few potential season ticket customers know what you really have with an exotic. He could be incompetent, but you can equally hope that he turns out to be a truly great appointment, with access to hitherto unexploited talent.

There was no point in Newco giving the job to a reliable but unspectacular candidate like Wright. This club needs to propel itself into a position where it competes against an elite Celtic team, and can navigate its way through four Europa League qualification rounds.

If it lowers the Union Jack and raises the White Flag to mark Surrender of league aspirations, its self-image would be destroyed. I could debate the commercial viability of an aspirational Newco with you all day (fanciful), but it appears that even the decision makers at Ibrox regard the viability of a subservient Newco as untenable.

The club faces Hobson’s Choice. Throw money it cannot afford at strategies selected BECAUSE correct due diligence is impossible, or downsize to a point they know will have a negative impact on ticket sales and future income.

20 years ago this week, Rangers beat Dunfermline 7-0 and were hot favourites to win 10-in-a-row, but the business model had a fundamental weakness: the club were haemorrhaging cash. You can debate whether the subsequent liquidation and newco phoenix club is the same or different to the Rangers some of us are old enough to remember.

What is irrevocably true is that Newco is unrecognisable from Rangers in one hugely important aspect: it will not win the league. Ever.

I walked by Clydemuir school this afternoon. It is the only non denom school down this part of Clydebank. Majority of weans playing fitba had Celtic strips on. Dalmuir is Green and White. It has skipped a generation. Their children are Celtic supporters. Which is nice.

Was at the Forum tonight. Overall i thought it was a very positive discussion and i think most folks who were there would agree. Was going to share some of my thoughts on it but in light of the award win (which was ironically announced during the meeting) i’ll leave it for another day. What i will say is that there were many issues discussed in terms of the support overall home/away/abroad and from supporters of different backgrounds and affiliations. There was also a recognition of the positive contribution of the GB and an acknowledgment that many of the issues are unfairly laid at their door. Will fill you in when i see you.

    ——

As you know tonight’s meeting is nothing like what was proposed and agreed by the Club. It’s a betrayal of trust and honest endeavour.

Anyways…what an incredible achievement this award is!!!!

As I’ve already said (but the blinkered appear to have ignored!) this award represents what we’re really about.

If you watched the game, were there and raised a bit of paper, screamed, roared, sobbed with emotion at what was around you, heard the score hours/days later in far off shores, saw footage on TV or social media and smiled or you simply stood on the park wearing Hooped jerseys on that day in May on the verge of invincibility and gasped at the thousands around you.

Be proud, you’re Celtic and you’re part of this award.

  12. A BIG Well done to us, it’s absolutely fantastic news and well deserved.

I am going to enjoy this, nearly as much as I enjoyed the whole of last season , and Saturday against Hibs!

Celtic won FIFA’s Best Fans award in London on Monday, less than 24 hours after they were dealt further sanctions by UEFA.

The Old Firm supporters won the award of best fans for their tribute to the Lisbon Lions in May – for the 50th anniversary of the club winning the European Cup – after voting from other clubs’ supporters on FIFA’s website.

The song was called ” It’s Magic”

At this time I would love to hear the Celtic fans sing the same song to the word’s £ It’s gonna be 10 in a row” !

I wish I could do the link…maybe someone else will be so kind ?

  21. This sent to BT Sport tonight –

    ****

Your news item dated 23/10/17 is ridiculous and is lazy journalism. It begins “Celtic fans have been recognised with a gong at the FIFA Best Awards in London.

The Old Firm supporters won the award of best fans for their tribute to the Lisbon Lions in May – for the 50th anniversary ……..”

Why use the antiquated term “Old Firm”? What other British club would have an item entirely related to them linked to a (nominal) competitor?

This story is a recognition of Celtic fans and their behaviour. If Spurs fans had won the award you would not have brought Arsenal into the item. Because it would have had nothing to do with Arsenal.

Celtic fans want to be judged by their own standards and behaviour and are happy to welcome feedback such as the (positive) comments from Fifa, the police service in Munich and the authorities in cities across Europe where they have brought joy and laughter over many decades.

They reject any association with any other team, especially one which has struggled to behave with such dignity.

My complaint is that the item would have been more appropriate without the needless use of the term “Old Firm” and that the use of that term dilutes and distracts from a story which is otherwise wholly positive. BT should insist their “journalists” desist from using the moribund and insulting “Old Firm” term.

    ****

If you agree and you have a BT Sport account you may want to consider also having a pop at them.

If you do not have a BT Sport account you may want to consider also having a pop at them.

I think we need to challenge this “Old Firm” nonsense every time we see it. It is not an “Old Firm” game , it is a Celtic v Rangers game. It is not an “Old Firm” crisis/controversy/dispute but, almost always a “Rangers” crisis/controversy/dispute. Hee Haw to do with us.

More and more the Ibrox mob and their media sycophants need the “Old Firm” label to make their inadequacies, moral deficits and turgid “Marching, Boldly, Backwards” philosophy a wider issue than just a Rangers disease and I think every true Celtic fan should reject this “Old Firm” label every time a lazy or mischievous “journalist” or commentator uses it.

I’ll feedback re any response I get.

  23. Rangers fans win FIFA Best flies award amid UEFA non sanctions

Rangers fans come together to display ‘protecting the players “on the pitch at the scottish cup final 2016.

The Old Firm supporters won the award of best fans for their tribute act to a long dead previous club supporters tradition of invading the pitch and assaulting fenians and taigs and daigo catholics, for the 44th anniversary of the dead club winning the European Cup Winners cup, ( after didnt let the quality street reserves enter)

In a ceremony attended by 1690 staunchly stupid wee arrow peoples , who took part in a card display which showed an image of the toilets in the barcelona dressing rooms and a hairy faced captain, accompanied by the words ‘Barca Bigots ” at their final match ever , may 2014. Portuguese capital.

Mark Dingwall, a fans representive of a handsome person “The display that was at the centre of that award was for a team of players that all grew up hating catholics, and celtic, and the south of ireland and green, and popes and them nuns that intimidate you on argyle street.

“They were coached by a man who was a leg end, born in the east of Scotland, who started his career in the army, as a true brit, going abroad and keeping the locals down for the benefit of the empire. god bless mr wallace. He said, ‘a club is nothing without its people’.

“That philosophy we take to heart and that drives everything we do. On behalf of our fans and across the world, I accept this honour with gratitude and humility. and if you dont like it we will row a boat out too the clyde and lets hope you dont fall out ”

Meanwhile Rangers were not fined for supporter behavior in the last six years as they are a new club, and no way was past incidents at Newcastle, Birmingham, Cologne, Turin, Barcelona , Eindhoven, and Manchester, anything to do with them what so ever.
