BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football. Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.
On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough. You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.
Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged. We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.
On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.
Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.
This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….
I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about. They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate). Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.
Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either. Absolutely squat. Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%. Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?
If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy. We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so. Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle. Pretty straightforward, really.

Hard to believe Celtic paid 5 – 6 million for Chris Sutton back in the days of Martin O’Neill. Yes, and Chris was only a reserve at Chelsea. His career reignited at Celtic.

Spoke to Oldtim last night on the phone, he was telling me that the game is on his tramcard so he must have heard or got the email :-)
Virgil Van Dijk is going to be an absolute standout soon…………..a centre half that actually plays football……imagine that!
Balde may develop in to a beast of a goal scorer……50/50 chance (and 1.5 M is chump change at this level)
We probably have another striker secured already.
We should have too much in the locker for Karagadzy.
Its all good people……really!

FOR PAUL
I dont have the time to be at CP because of overseas work but I will buy a SB for a deserving cause….maybe some one (like a Parish Priest?) can act as honest broker and give different people the opportunity to attend CP each week who GENUINELY cannot afford it?
My e-mail is on my registration……….
Just saying.
I see Sevco’s match with Brechin was watched by just 24,000 views on the telly – glad to say I wasn’t one of them.

Today 16:14BAconsultantLaxey. Ahmad. Green41.50No Opinion
The announcement today that Laxey partners are to acquire a voice at the Ibrox table won’t surprise anyone. Charles Green already had in place an agreement to sell to them. The timing of it though is quite eye opening. Today we see that Imran Ahmad is to sue Rangers for £3.4m for unpaid bonuses. The surprise is that it is supported by Charles Green. Is this why he has decided to sell up now before he is sacked at the imminent EGM thus devaluing his shares. So with the announcement of Imran Ahmad is suing Rangers for £3.4 million and knowing that they only have £10m in the bank they really are in a perilous situation. They also have a VAT bill of £1.7m for season tickets still out standing. That brings the total cash reserves to £4.9. With the board members and playing staff on astronomical amounts of money for playing part time footballers they are very close to insolvency if they do not cut back on wages. Selling pies and bovrils won’t cut it. Neither will selling replica strips. They only get 49% income from Rangers retail. This is not enough. They need to get rid of the vultures that sit in Ibrox taking all the money out. They need proper investment. Green, £360+100% bonus & *add ons* = vulture. Ahmad, £300+100% bonus+5% = vulture. Stockbridge £200+100% bonus = vulture. Mather £300+£200 bonus (£500k confirmed 12/8/13) = vulture. I foresee that once Green has got rid of all his shares, either to Laxey or to the Easdales he will join Ahmad in a claim against the new regime. If Stockbridge and Mather are removed they will require a pay off

Lenny will line up as you say, still doesn’t inspire me with confidence, one goal over two legs against an average team, we struggled against Ross Cty to score, dispite being all over them.
We will see what transpires mi amigo, we are all in at this stage.

If you think the moaning is bad regarding the transfer inactivity, just wait till we lose a goal at a corner…
… 2 years of pent-up hatred of zonal marking will out. Guaranteed.

Presumably Sevco have laid-off the plumbers because they have no hope of stopping the avalanche of sh1t flowing from Ibrox.
To all who want to pay £5m for a guy we have never seen Why not offer £6m and if the Dutch club say let me think – let’s offer £7m or even £8m and just get it done ??? Talk about panic. Thank God for PL

Always enjoyed your updates on that subject.
Well worth continuing with if you don’t mind.
Cannot for the life of me understand why CP is not full and why season tickets are not sold out. Is it because we take Celtic for granted, I’m certain there are thousands like me who no longer live in Scotland who would give their eye teeth to be at the game every week. when I lived in Scotland, I was there every home game and most away games too. What’s happening??? Everyone waiting for the glory so they can jump on the old bandwagon!! Get off your a##ses and get a season ticket now. The future of the club depends on you, you know it makes sense.
I for one get seriously pi##ed off to see all the gripes and moans from people who don;t go to the games. Pay your money, go to the games and then bitch all you want. Those who don’t pay have no right to complain.
Sorry if the truth hurts.

Money is very tight at the moment for a lot of people.
Family should come before football – and that is a big reason why folk are not buying season tickets.
I think what we are seeing here,is the great negotiator PL being outsmarted. He has entered negotiations with a weaken hand. The seller knows that Celtic have 20m splashing about in their money pool,The seller has all the aces in his hands, you like to buy low Peter, and sell high so do we £5m is our price.
Motto of the story ,buy before you sell.
Clyde phone in with guys from CQN calling in hehehehe he.

No, ‘fraid not.
I’m just hacked off that my beloved team are not being supported the way they should be!
In my day, in the old jungle, we supported our team come hell or high water and it kinda irks that to me anyway, the only way we can increase our support is to win the CL.
Chickens and Eggs and all that. Full house at Celtic park every home game – – what would that do to increase our revenue stream I wonder, hmm

You are right about the cash for a lot of folk. But a big factor is a lot of Celtic fans are not excited by the football just now. There are several in my work who did not renew. It’s not cash for any of them and two of them held season books last year.

Surely the motto of the story is not to believe what you read in the press?
Paul67 (or anyone else that knows the answer), Your article yesterday covered possible interest in Kevin Doyle. You went on to say this in response to a question…
‘Philbhoy no info but I suspect the prospect of Doyle is receding after the CL draw’.
Why would the prospect of Kevin Doyle receed after the champions league draw? Sorry if I am being a bit thick but are we thinking the draw is hard so no point in recruiting Doyle? Or is it that the draw is easy so no point going for him until after the games as he would only be bought for the League stage?
I note the serious subterfuge on the apparent approach to spending but confused on this point. For what its worth I don’t expect Doyle to be any better than what we already have if he hasn’t already signed for Hull?
Think about it Doyle is on 50 grand a week,
tonydonnelly67
Can’t be a CQN guy – he can’t count.
3 times he said we brought in £45M – should be paying £5M for a striker cause that would get us another £22M from the CL.
He said: “A mean that would give us £70M!”
Roll on September 2nd.
BIG-CUP-WINNERS 18:42 on 13 August, 2013
One of pals has had a season ticket since the ground was rebuilt and he couldn’t afford to go to any of the Champions League games last season.
He has a young family. He has renewed his ST again, but the guy is struggling … although he has his priorities in order.

Not believing anything I may read in the press, only my own observation, based on years of buying and selling. In this case I think the seller has the strongest hand.
Good Evening Timland.
If they want 5m for the lad either pay it
or move ffs…….simples……..come on
Peter, give Neil and the fans a present
I would look to anyone who has strong views on the subject to answer this question.
What value is there nowadays in having these transfer windows?
Half Time ICT 1 – Celtic 2
No wonder its quiet in here tonight, they all calling the phone in and doing what they do well, MOAN.
tonydonnelly67, (the antithesis of Canamalar)… OK I’ve thought aboutit. Does your statement mean we won’t sign Doylebecause he is on £50k per week? Why would Neil Lennon admit to interest if we wouldn’t even pass muster on the mandatory criteria?
