Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

1037

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

Football clubs under achieve because they spend too much on the wrong players and not enough on the right manager.

If we get put out and haven’t strengthened the squad between now and the two games the blame is 100% on PL and the Celtic board. We shouldn’t be underestimating this team, the budgets have nothing to do with it, it’s a UCL playoff, they’ve came through two (arguably tougher) ties the same as we have so they should be treated the same as sides like Legia Warsaw or Austria Vienna had we got them, maybe people’s opinion on the lack of transfer activity would be different had we drawn one of those two.

Got it delivered today, and I’m fair rattling through it….no bad so far

  20. Afternoon,

Some of the posts here allude to an idea that we are diametrically opposed

when it comes to transfer strategy.

    This is not the case.

There is sensibility in abundance on display here.

Here’s my attempt to define the parameters of our current transfer debate.

There are no demands for high cost genuine marquee style signing.

No claims for a 12.5M bid for, lets just say, Fellaini to replace VW

It seems most of us on here agree with the general principle of our strategy.

And why not? We have been demonstrating some fantastic asset management

recently and long may that continue.

The current strategy of signing 5 x 2M “project” players in the knowledge that one may

emerge as a Key player and will cause envious eyes to be cast north from the cash rich south is quite sound. The resulting sale of which pays for the total speculation.

This has been a tremendous success recently.

Many of us here would suggest, that perhaps it is necessary to break from this

model when it comes to securing the services of a proven goal scorer.

Presumably such claims would be challenged with the “money is no guarantee…”

stance. With this in mind I would suggest that most clubs tend to value their

better players higher than others and that goalscorers in particular, command a premium. Cost is indeed no guarantee but valuations tend to be based on merit.

I’m sure we can all agree on that.

I have no problem with how Celtic manage their SQUAD.

The emphaisis is on squad there.

Replacing vital members of the first team who play a crucial role

in determining our football (and financial -if you like) success, is

    another matter.

This would appear to be were some of us differ in opinion.

Again to reiterate, there are not two extremes of opinion.

No CL money + Hoops + Wanyama + Wilson= Luis Suarez fund claims.

    Far from it.

What I do see here and can fully understand, is a genuine concern

that lack of a significant proportion of player sales being reinvested

results in a dilution of quality.

Presumably that is not something we wish to see.

If it costs that little bit extra to secure the services of the man who is

going to provide our goals/results and general entertainment we should

be willing to pay. Many of us could then go on and suggest that such a

player should have been already acquired given that our season is already

underway, especially given the importance of the CL qualifiers…

  21. masty is neil lennon 16:38

My point was to encourage them to make a decision to take the money or not rather than them using an increased offer to start a bidding war. I think you missed my point. The numbers are not important.

  22. Our board seem to think we can hold out for top dollar when selling a player but can scrimp and save when buying a player, am all for giving the board credit the way we are run but if we don’t sign a decent striker for these european games I will be f•ckin raging they need to start backing the manager, we are crying out for a goal scorer because we will make plenty of chances and if he’s not knocking down lawwells door demanding his first choice Lenny better start.

    Hadenoughofthistransferwindowalready csc

  23. CelticTom, i suppose it comes down to the number of season books which has been falling dramatically over the past few years. I mentioned yesterday we only woke up to it in last few games of season with £20 tickets instead of £29. What concerns me is that section 111 now looks like it will be empty and if its true the upper section of jockstein will be closed also. In this situation we need to get bums on seats , i agree the board has moved on reducing season tickets but that looks like it wont be enough to get the required numbers. Its the peripherals that add up such as food, programmes, betting, windfall, merchandising etc.

I’m no expert but we seem to be in good financial health so we should be able to pick up a playmaker and replacement striker. Simple maths says we got £5.5m for hooper who cost £1.8 so they say and £2.5m for wilson plus Dublin match so for an outlay of £1.8m there’s £8.5m.

Without a bit of flair and playing football the celtic way fans will continue to pick and choose their games. The strategy is risky at the moment as goals are hard to come by however if we reach the CL group stage then we are in a great position to attract good signings should we choose to do so!

It is hard to imagine Celtic will be as poor as we were in Sweden – when so many players had such a bad night.

On the plus side from the Elfsborg match – had we played that poorly two years ago we would already be out of the Champions League.

Celtic have learned a lot in that time. Despite our performance we limited the Elfs to one shot on target … easily saved.

Naw I’m no, I just think that some folks think this is how we approach the day to day running of the club, like most I would love to log on and see we had signed a striker before the qualifier, we need a sarcasm font on here!!
