Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

1037

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

  1. RalphWaldoEllison remembers ALS victims Jimmy Jonstone & John Cushley on

I remember anxious posts after we signed Gary Hooper, along the lines of

He he was that good one of the EPL teams would have come in for him, so there must be a “problem” with him.

Never heard of him, so he can’t be that good.

Typical biscuit tin way of fobbing the support off with a nobody.

I also recall too that when we bought Victor there were comments like..

He was playing on the Continent yet none of their big teams scouts fancied him so he’s probably a dud.

He won’t like playing in Inverness on a cold night in January so he’s a waste of money.

Until we signed them recently, I hadn’t heard of Van Dyjk, Balde or Boerrigter. The only Finnbogason that I knew of was the lad who was a youth player for Celtic.

Not being complacent about this, but I don’t know enough about the bigger football world to know who is a good investment/player and who isn’t.

I don’t know anything worth knowing about the Khazakh team, but they are into the play offs for the CL so know what they are doing. If we play well then I trust we will prevail over the two legs.

As far as the lottery of CL qualifying goes, many of the fancied teams in the EPL, Liga, Bundesliga etc are very relieved that they don’t have to compete in 6 competitive games in the summer to get into the group stages. I don’t believe any of them would fancy going to Kazakhstan in August just to make the group stages. Would the Liverpool team that we saw in Dublin be really up for such a tie?

Anyway, in the absence a full report from my agent in the East about the Khazakhs, I will cross my fingers that all our players remain uninjured (daft international friendlies scheduled in the middle of our CL qual!!)

A Stor- I don’t know; not much I can do about it either way, except to turn up and support the team.

History does show that we have had some Marquee signings in the past that didn’t live up to the hype; I’ve posted on here before that my ‘benchmark’ signing is Johan Mjallby; didn’t cost a lot of money, wasn’t really known over here yet went on to have a great career.

we are not going to convince each other of our respective positions

i just hope the gamble re the squad pays off

one question however …how much is the deficit that has to be covered by CL participation or player sales ?

when we know this figure we can properly discuss how much money should be available for players

    The spine of our team?

    Geezabreak.

If Kevin Wilson is not replaceable by any other existing player who can play central defense Lutzig, Mulgrew, Ambrose, The Dutch lad Van wossname, or Molyouko (sp) some folk know sfa about football.

*there are many on here who would have personally drove KW to Nottingham this time last year, he did come on too a good season last year but due to personal problems wanted back home, just like Paul Elliot.

Then there is the goalie. Oh haud oan he has not left.

That leaves Hooper whom many accused of switching off from January.

*absolutely and only picked his tools up for the cup final centre stage, his SPL goals were dismal.

A spine gives you backbone, strength. One replacement for Hooper, whom we are obviously looking for fixes that and has us no worse and probably better than last season.

*one of my major disappointments on striker signing was Harrald, he ticked all the boxes but it never worked out.

Sutton, Chelsea flop, BBJ weight and temperate issues but both worked out.

Joe McBride, why are we chasing this man of many clubs and was a flop in England especially when we had Chalmers, Hughes and Lennox as goal scorers.

Dixie Deans another one with issues on the park was in the middle of a 6 match suspension when he signed for us.

Thank God Jock knew more than me about signing players.

We will qualify against Borat’s mob nae bother.

  8. I have a funny feeling that the Finnbogason deal is just about complete and he will be paraded on Friday. Someone posted an interview on the last thread at Iceland’s preparation camp, and at the end of the interview he is asked about Celtic and he doesn’t say anything but has a very telling grin on his face. Just a gut feeling

Agreed, established CL players cost upwards of 10 million. Celtic have to create our own CL established players like Wanyama. A circa 5 million spend, makes that task easier.

  20. On another note, has anybody seen Dortmund this season

After all the gloom and doom of the squad being sold off like Christmas at the Lawwell house they have only sold Gotze (which was forced due to a release clause)

They have signed Aubameyang who looks a cracking buy and Miktarian still hasn’t made his debut. Assuming everybody stays fit they will be the team to watch again this year!

Scott Brown will captain Scotland when they line up against England for the first time in 14 years on Wednesday night.

The Celtic midfielder missed his nation’s last three games through injury but will return to the line-up for the game at Wembley.

Manager Gordon Strachan said on Tuesday afternoon he was still facing a selection dilemma over a number of positions but Brown will come in to his midfield.

STV is to show the first England v Scotland international in 14 years live on air and online.

The Auld Enemy are due to clash at Wembley on Wednesday August 14 and we will bring you dedicated coverage of the game.

Next day, game done, back on the flight to London, who’s on the flight? Mr Mahe is and he is hyper and happy. At the time I did not know why.

Celtic’s hopes of landing Heerenveen striker Alfred Finnbogason have been dented with the Dutch side demanding £5 million as Lazio and Augsburg join the race for his signature, reports the Daily Record.

Finnbogason has been lined up as potential replacement for Gary Hooper, as Celtic boss Neil Lennon continues to search for a forward after their top scorer departed for Norwich earlier this summer.

The Icelandic scored 27 times in 33 appearances last season, and Celtic chief scout John Park was an interested spectator has the striker netted in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Breda.

However, the Hoops will need to find at least £5 million to bring him to Glasgow, with competition from Augsburg and Lazio also proving difficult obstacles in their pursuit.

The German side have already had a bid of £4.5 million rejected, and with Lazio keen to make an offer of their own, a bidding-war looks set before the end of the transfer window in 18 days.

The 24-year-old is believed to be happy with life at his current club and will not demand a transfer, with Heerenveen director Gaston Sporre hoping to keep hold of him.

“It’s true proposals have come but the amounts are not interesting enough,” he said.

“We’d prefer to keep him. He’s important to us and he won’t just go anywhere.”
