Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

Sad news about Llanelli FC from ole Ylurc.

A great connection with Celtic through a journeyman centre half called John Stein who went on to show some promise as a coach and manager.

BSR -wee Fernando’s mask looks like he’s struggled to put on the ole mankini, and failed miserably.

Folks will ask if you miss the game against the now defunct Rangers?

For me I do miss the game, and considering that CP was full to the gunnels every time we played them, I’m sure many others do as well,

    Euro Preparations

However I do relish the freedom that Lenny has to drop and rest players before European matches and the ability to make proper preparation in the run up to these games, without worrying about what the fitba authorities had lined up for us in the fixtures

    10 In a row

I look forward to winning 10 in a row and reclaiming what is rightfully ours. The debt mongers may have won 9 titles while they were up to knees in debt, they enjoyed the gravy train and now the bill has arrived and they cant pay. This is a golden opportunity to set that record right again

I will enjoy seeing my club with the financial bonuses that comes with title and CL in the next few years

    Alternative

When the MSM ask if we miss the demise of rangers, we should ask , what was the alternative? The MSM alternative to the huns going bust was to let them, ditch their debt and stay in the SPL unhindered. Apparently it was for our own good. Never in a million years was this ever going to be acceptable.

    Old Firm

So yes I miss the games against Rangers, but the positives outweigh the negatives by a long shot.

Anyway I enjoyed the last ever old firm game when we won 3-0. After all how can they ever be part of the old firm when they are a brand new firm.

I relish the fact the world’s most sectarian team has now gone bust, and all the snivelling attempts to deny that will never change my mind.

  7. I’m no expert on the Australian economy, but I would have thought the opportunities for employment better there than here.

    And what about the weather!!

  8. Like most people I am asked daily if I miss the Celtic v Rangers match.

My answer is always the same.

I miss winning them but I don’t miss losing them. It’s out of our hands. They went bust and are no more.

    Next!!!!

First ever post, after been lurking for years. Currently living in Melbourne past 3 years and either need to move to Sydney or Glasgow for work. Just watched game and celebrations from Sunday and realise how much you miss home, family, friends and how blessed I am to call myself a Tim. I also appreciate how fortunate I am to have a choice in these tough times but just wondering if anyone has had to make this decision

    HailHail

I moved back to Glasgow a few years ago after having spent many years living in Sydney.

I wont say it’s the worse decision I have ever made but it’s up there.

I needed to move back for family reasons, not economic reasons, founf it hard to adjust to life back in Glasgow though the Tic made it easier.

I had the benefit of becoming an Austalian citizen, so i can come and go as i please into Aus, which helps.

Sydney is a great city though expensive with a great CSC.

If I were you i stay put in Aus.

  15. Cultsbhoy,

In my lifetime, RFC always pandered to their support.

They were afraid of them, as they needed their “culture” to sustain them.

If you include the triumphalism that they adhere to, you can understand that winning was all that ever mattered.

My own late father understood their mentality and it goes a long way to explain the numbers who turned up at Ibrox this season.

He described their attendance at games as a Roman Holiday -i.e. akin to the Romans who turned up at the Collisseum (sp) to see how the Lions got on against the Gladiators.

It was never about the competition, always about “winning”.

Celtic have never pandered to the whims of a fickle support and long may that continue.

I am a wee bit confused by your dad’s hypothesis. You could point to their diminishing crowds, during the unsuccessful period when Greig was manager, as the evidence in favour of that view. i.e. you could assert that they got rid of Greig because the fans were staying away.

However their crowds did not fall especially during our 9iar period and they still got rid of Davie White without much fan pressure, in terms of voting with their feet. So you can assert, in that instance, that their Board will respond to events if the fans are unhappy whether they attend or stay away.

Our fallow period during the 80s and 90s saw a repeat of their fans behaviour under Greig. Our crowds were down too, albeit by not as much as theirs dropped during the Greig era. Our fans, however, organised a formal boycott, something they have never got round to, despite having experienced much worse management than we did. The worst you could say of the Old Board at Celtic was that they were inefficient managers and custodians but they were not crooks on the make.

Yes, we had a core group of fans who were “faithful through and through” but so did they, though there may have been 5 to 10k fewer of theirs. The “faithful through and through” section of our fans, and I will not say anything more pejorative about them than they were on the wrong side of history, did not delay the Fergus takeover unduly nor did they manage to sustain the old Board beyond their sell-by date. A vindictive bank would still have threatened closure whether there were 10k more or 10k less of the “faithful through and through” fans.

Not many Rangers fans did walk after Walter revealed that Murray was being replaced by Lloyds bank. Not many walked when Craig Whyte appeared. And not many walked when Charlie Green appeared. Their fans have neither been ruthless nor proactive, compared to ours.

On balance, I would say there is a greater weight of evidence against your dad’s thesis than in favour.

I never like to hear the “what’s rightfully ours” comment. That’s exactly the sort of arrogant attitude displayed by many a hun which eventually played a large part in the disappearance of their team. R******s claim control of firm in legal dispute with Craig Whyte

By Mike Farrell 22 April 2013 11:15 BST

R******s: The club described Sevco 5088 as a ‘subsidiary’ of the parent company.© SNS Group

R*****s have claimed control of a company at the heart of a legal dispute with Craig Whyte.

In an announcement to the stock exchange on Monday, Sevco 5088 Limited is described as a “subsidiary” of R******s International Football Club plc.

Mr Whyte claims the firm was established on his behalf last year and gives him a legal hold over R******s’ assets, including Ibrox and Murray Park. He claims Charles Green was enlisted as a director of Sevco 5088 to act as a “front” for him in an attempt to regain control of R******s, which Mr Green denies.

According to the AIM notification, Mr Green held a directorship in Sevco 5088 on December 7 last year, the day the AIM admission document was published.

Mr Green previously stated in an interview with STV that he had “handed back” the firm to Mr Whyte after the company was no longer needed once a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) was destined to fail. No documentation confirming Mr Green’s resignation from Sevco 5088 has been filed with Companies House.

According to the share issue prospectus published last December, Sevco 5088 was a “related party” to R******s International, of which Mr Green was the “sole shareholder”. Mr Green said in a statement earlier this month that he “was the sole director of Sevco 5088 until he resigned and became the founder director of Sevco Scotland” which was incorporated on May 29 last year.

The retrospective directorate declaration to the exchange comes after Mr Green announced his intention to step down as R******s chief executive with immediate effect on Friday, citing “negative publicity” surrounding his links to Mr Whyte.

It also emerged after former Rangers owner Mr Whyte instructed lawyers to contest the lodging of termination notices with Companies House for director appointments of himself and associate Aidan Earley with Sevco 5088.

stated that the directorships of the pair had been terminated on the same day they were appointed last year.

However, a spokesman for the former R******s owner said: “Mr Whyte has noted the attempt to remove himself and Mr Earley as directors of Sevco 5088.

“Mr Green has publicly acknowledged that he resigned as a director and transferred the company some time ago. The Companies House record is not the legal determinant of who owns the company and who are directors. This issue will form part of the forthcoming legal case.”

Companies House said that only people with access to the online authorisation code for the company could have terminated the appointment, while it was unable to clarify who had lodged them. The e-forms relating to the moves do not name the individual behind them, while no signatures are present on the forms as they were submitted via the registrar’s website.

    Sevco 5088

STV contacted R******S and Mr Green for comment on the development, but they did not provide a response for publication. Mr Green is still listed as a Sevco 5088 director on the Companies House website and signed off on a proposal to dissolve the firm on December 27 last year, weeks after Mr Whyte sent him a letter warning of legal action. London legal firm Field Fisher Waterhouse, which established Sevco 5088 as an off-the-shelf company in March last year, declined to comment on the move.

The registered address of the firm was recently changed from Field Fisher Waterhouse’s Vine Street office to one in London’s Skyline Village, which is associated with Mr Whyte’s businesses. However, last Wednesday an e-filing with Companies House reverted it to lawyer’s office.

STV recently revealed that Mr Green admitted asking Mr Whyte for £25,000 to pay the legal fees of Field Fisher Waterhouse. The outgoing R******s chief executive claimed the cheque bounced, however STV obtained proof to suggest that it cleared and the money was paid out of a business account associated with Mr Earley.

R******s announced that they had instructed lawyers to respond to the claims of Mr Whyte and Mr Earley, while they also said they would be preparing a file to submit to Police Scotland in relation to the dispute. The club also informed the stock exchange in London that an independent inquiry into the conduct of Mr Green and Imran Ahmad was being carried out, days before the chief executive announced he was stepping down.

Last week Worthington Group plc, which has close links to Mr Whyte and Mr Earley, announced to the stock exchange that it would be funding the legal action against R*****s after receiving advice that it had a “prima facie case”. Mr Whyte has sold a 26% stake in his firm Law Financial Limited, which he claims owns Sevco 5088 as well as several other companies, under the £250,000 deal.

The online documents were filed last week, after Mr Whyte confirmed he was seeking to use the company to seize control of the club’s assets. Mr Whyte is adamant the termination move was not made by himself or Mr Earley, while he has also stated that it does not alter his ownership or role as a director of Sevco 5088. The businessman’s lawyers have contacted Companies House over the lodging of the termination forms.

    Documents

STV revealed documents were filed with Companies House which appeared to show Ibrox chief executive Mr Green’s signature on the Sevco 5088 directorships of Mr Whyte and Mr Earley on May 9, 2012. Days later, Sevco 5088 signed an exclusive agreement for the club’s assets with administrators Duff and Phelps, although they were eventually transferred to an unrelated entity, Sevco Scotland Limited.
