Malky, Craig, redundancies

1217

I got it wrong on Malky MacKay.  In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.  That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”

Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.

Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions.  Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.

So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested.  You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal.  Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.

Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism.  Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?

I have some sympathy for their new management.  They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.

Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value?  No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash.  There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety.  By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley.  He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.

Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club.  I fully endorse his views.

King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces.  His rantings are not part of a coherent plan.  His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.

Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income.  Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

Jimmynotpaul, I didn’t know that Sam wrote a Change is gonna come after being inspired by Bob Dylan.

On Broonie, he has never and won’t be our our most skilful player but by all accounts our managers he has played for and other players love him as he is a great team mate plus a good influence on the players. . He also gives that useless git, Jamie Hammill, a hard time when we played Hearts and now he is back at Killie.

  6. Well “Broonie ” has signed a new contract.he is not the most skillfull or the most talented player to pull on our beloved “Hoops” but for commitment and desire he is up there with the best.

The player we have missed the most ,when they have not been available,is “Broonie”

Roll on the rest of the season,Ronny and Broonie, there’s a good ring to that.HH

  7. I’m guessin’ wee davie hasn’t yet been button-holed by scoddlands finest hacks for his “reaction” to Whytey’s…..*cough*…….. predicament?

    Until The Last Chic Young.

  8. Delighted Broody has signed a new deal. Discussion on here a week back about what he brings to the team. Celtic TEAM definitely much poorer without him and our CL results attest to that fact.

Also a lot of talk in recent days about clubs from the second best league( after Scottish Championship) in the World sniffing around and rather than drag that out to.up.his own ante he does what a Celtic captain should do and signs. Well done broody.

On other matters. Watching European golf from Dubai and lo and behold spectator with the Celtic bumblebee away strip. Ghod bless you sir.

Only two things that can be seen from the moon, great wall of China and the bumblebee away strip.

Jimmynotpaul, even though I stayed a ten minute walk from Langholm Street, I never went near it. Scary place.

When I worked in Clydebank, their equivalent of Langholm Street was Trafalgar Street as you go west into Dalmuir. It was well named as it looked like a few battles (not sea battles I know) had been fought their.

Delaney’s, the Drum has now been thrown into the mix with St Tam’s.

Its strange how history repeats itself, when the Drum was built, Catholic children had to travel to St Tam’s before St Pius was built. For the last twenty years or so, Catholic children from the Drum have been going to St Tam’s.

  12. the glorious balance sheet on

I`m very pleased that Scott Brown has signed a new contract with Celtic.

We badly miss him when he isn`t in the team – just look at the Legia and Maribor European games for example.

  13. Again, the conspiracy theorists on here doing my nut in.Stop acting like stupid huns. The reason Mc Leod was brought in to the squad was for WGS to have a look at him.He had never watched the boy play, why would he,but he has scouts giving him reports.Personally,I have never seen the boy play,so I have no judgement, same as WGS.It is his duty as manager to explore every avenue.Maybe the boy will be a good player, especially if he leaves the huns and moves to a better level.Conspiracy to help the huns sell him?.Do me a favour.

  15. DD, my dread was when my ma asked me to go to the “new shops” to get a loaf or whatever…Castlemilk had a gang every fifty yards back then.

It was like Logans run getting there and back, if they couldn’t catch you the slug guns sometimes did.

Must admit, things have moved on…;)

  16. Dallas

Trafalgar St has been cleaned up. Two friends live there. Dalmuir is trying to pick itself up. We just need more jobs for the weans. A large growing youth unemployment here.

  18. Any coincidence that Broonie has signed a new 4 year contract extension on the eve of an AGM ?

  19. Great News about Broony. We are lucky to have his drive and his will to win.

I grew up playing on the shore fields at Caol. The council have since ruined this place.

Anyway, looking back a quite a talented group of boys with some excellent ba’ players. Several went and had trials and one or two made the grade.

One of the group was a Donald Park who was a tenacious, never give up sort of guy who run for the whole game but lacked the skill of the better players. He was a pest but what an attitude.

However this attitude got him a game for the local works side, then eventually up to Inverness where he played for Inv Caley for a couple of years. He was then signed by Hearts and had a very successful career, loved by their supporters before going onto becoming Asst Manager at Hibs.

The point I am making is that skill is not everything, Leadership, drive and a never say die attitude are also important. Broony has all of this as well as a fair bit of skill.

If we were back on the shore field at Caol and Broony was there, he would be my first pick, sorry Parkie.

  20. Fanadpatriot

As I said god bless him AND your good self.

Love to see the hoops on display. Although pity we can’t match the dead teams 500 m world wide support.

I’m joking of course…The Minx wouldn’t go with a ghuy who kept a durty hoose…wid she?

  22. If I may be slightly critical of Broony’s comment. His last line about brining the success we deserve.

Sorry, that’s very supremacist, unless we deserve less than winning everything.

Change deserve to desire and I’m happy.

Glad you’ve signed for another four years.
