I got it wrong on Malky MacKay. In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all. He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff. That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”
Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.
Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions. Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.
So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested. You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal. Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.
Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism. Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?
I have some sympathy for their new management. They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.
Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value? No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash. There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety. By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley. He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.
Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club. I fully endorse his views.
King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces. His rantings are not part of a coherent plan. His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.
Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income. Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

I remember that game. Was following us everywhere at that time. Often in misery.
I got off to a bad start in that mental school, it didnae get much better till 5th year. :)
3rd year before I had my playground spat, not a pie, a ball was the cause, similar result but I got away with it, I looked like the class swot, St Tams was a breeze after that day :-)
Ian Black must be worth a couple of tins of Dulux.
Lee McCulloch could be useful as hardcore for the A9 upgrade.
Super Salary could be considered for a swap deal with a Gregg’s sandwich board.
That’s my three.

CELTIC are delighted to announce that Scott Brown has signed a new extended contract that will keep him at the club for a further four years, until summer 2018.
The midfielder, who is captain for club and country, is an inspirational figure for the Hoops and has led the team to three consecutive league titles. And he’s determined to make it four-in-a-row this season under Ronny Deila.
Scott joined Celtic from Hibernian in May 2007, making his debut for the club against Kilmarnock on August 5, and he has gone on to make nearly 300 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 29 goals.
Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Scott Brown said: “It’s an absolute privilege to extend my contract with Celtic, a brilliant football club and with such incredible supporters. This is a place that I call home.

just reading through Board’s comments on living wage and particularly irked by their great employer, all employees, even junior ones can receive up to a 20% bonus statement.
Note that Eric Riley’s bonus is 43% and PL’s is 76%.
Doing my sums if THEY were restricted to a 20% bonus on their already pretty fat salaries we’d have the K£500 they claimed this would cost at last year’s agm to fund the living wage additional cost.
Wonder if that will be mentioned tomorrow…..

I dont share the enthusiasm about Scott Brown signing a new contract, unless it means that we can get something for him if/when he is transferred.
He has a great engine, and will run all day for Celtic .. no doubt. He may be a great guy, and a great teammate (all of which I have heard), but when he plays, he throws off the shape and balance of the team.
He isn’t disciplined enough, or doesn’t read the game well enough, to be a pure holding mid. And his ball and passing skills aren’t good enough to be the midfield general we are crying out for. So we end up with a bit of a vacuum in the middle of the park.
His energy can work when used on the right of a midfield three…. but we have others that are better suited to a wide right/forward role (e.g., while he may not provide the defensive coverage that SB does, Forrest will chip in with more goals)
When he and his pal were at Hibs, I thought they might be the future Scotland midfield, but neither fulfilled the promise they showed.
I dont know his salary, but can make a pretty good guess, and just dont think he brings enough to justify that sort of salary. I think we could get more bang for our buck elsewhere.

Unfortunately ‘Fat Lee’ (3rd year hard man) sat at our table in St. Ninian’s dinner hall that day and put the contents of the salt dish onto his pie.
I would love to say that ‘Fat Lee’ saw the funny side of the prank that day……..
