Marginal advantages eventually come a cropper

458

One story which caught my eye last week was that we have 33 players out on international duty over this break, from a pool of 51 employed professionals (and that includes Derk Boerrigter). 13 Celtic players will join Scotland youth teams, with a further 6 going to other countries.

We know we can’t compete as we once did in the transfer market, so getting and developing the best youth talent has become an important part of the strategy.

All of this groundwork is for the long-term, though. Getting three points each Saturday and preparing for the challenges ahead is another question.

There was a moment on Saturday when Aberdeen manager, Derek McInnes, could have turned to his assistant and said, “If Killie hold on for another two minutes, the league is in our own hands”. That’s how close things got. Tom Rogic’s immaculate strike punctured that notion, before McInnes’ team’s second half collapse at Fir Park.

Now Aberdeen need us to drop seven points more than them, or eight if you consider goal difference. It’s not going to happen.  Aberdeen didn’t just slip up on Saturday due to a couple of defensive lapses, this result has been in the post for months.  They clawed their way into contention by gaining a series of marginal advantages – they haven’t won a game by more than a single goal since before Christmas – 14 games ago!

This season they have been ‘everyone’s favourite second team’ who have only just got over the line for three months of the season.  This is a statistical anomaly.  A more regular distribution of chances created and converted would have seen them win several of those games comfortably, but winning far fewer games.  Their dopplegangers in England, Leicester City, are benefiting from a similar phenomenon.  Both teams’ form could drop off a cliff next season, but the chances of either improving win ratios, if not performances, are slight.

Leicester are favourites to win in England because the behemoths, whose spending-power dwarfs most others, have been unable to dig deep to find a dirty win often enough.  Like Celtic’s on Saturday.  That, as we will soon declare, is why we’re champions!

Well that’s a start, and clears a few things up, at least you have let me (us) know that there is some sort of plan B in the pipeline and all is not lost, people for obvious reasons don’t need to know everything that’s going on, just a little clarity now and again is enough, thanks for your reply, makes me feel less ignorant now, people get put off when name calling starts, bad PR.

The “return” of “Rangers” is something that hugely divides opinion.

Some take the view that if the Ibrox club plays in the top flight of Scottish Football and attracts 40,000 season ticket sales, Celtic will inevitably see an increase in the number of seson books because “historically” the attendances for Celtic and Rangers used to rise and fall together over a period of time.

However, there is also a very strong feeling abroad among sections of the Celtic support that the game is so devoid of openess, transparency and fairness that they will not necesarily return to senior football let alone Celtic while that continues.

The danger for the Celtic PLC board is that if they are seen by many as being silent, or worse complicit, in the gerrymandering of the game itself or in failing to insist in openess, transparency and fairness they will lose a large section of their customer base.

My point, though, was more to do with what CAUSES some to want the `return` and others to be vehemently opposed. That the latter are the majority ( I think) on Blogs and the minority in society points to opinions being influenced by what we read. That, basically, was my point.

  12. I canny and, won’t try to speak for all the folk involved in the res : 12 stuff.

But, as an ordinary bloke who stood in the Jungle for almost 2 decades – 1974 / 1992(when the auld board put seats in)….I think that, the res : 12 thing will only get over the line and, produce the goods….if….the Celtic hierarchy are held to ransom by the fans on season book renewal day.

    It’s so simple…..

Inform the hierarchy that – “The only way that they’ll get the season book money will be, when the hierarchy get into the ring and fight the fans corner re: Resolution : 12.” – “Failure to do so will result in a stand-off between – hierarchy v’s season book money with-holding supporters.”

Just a note to shareholders who are inclined to support the aims and objectives of Res 12 that we are looking for mandates to send to the solicitors who have been corresponding with the SFA and Celtic PLC and who will be corresponding with UEFA.

The mandate will not mean you incurring legal fees or charges and only authorises the solicitors to write to the appropriate bodies on your behalf as a Celtic shareholder.

If you are inlcined to provide a mandate then please print off the wording below, sign it where indicated and send it to:

I’m really confused as to what difference it makes whether this letter is from one or many shareholders. Surely it has no legal bearing on the points of the letter.

It really strikes me as another stalling tactic.

  18. afore I go…..a wee prediction….

The year 2016 is a monumental year for old Ireland and it’s diaspora.

From a purely, magical, mystical vantage point….

The Republic Of Ireland International team

Managed by – Martin O’Neill & Roy Keane

Will, in this blessed year…win the European Championship’s

in France later in the summer.

As, Ireland and, the Irish diaspora world-wide go ecstatic in their celebrations,….this same diaspora’s greatest gift to the world – Celtic Football Club – will, in-keeping with this historic year….embrace the rebellious nature espoused by the, legendary historic heroes of 1916 when, ironically….Celtic supporters will rebel against the hierarchy of their club when, the hierarchies collusion with the, anti-Celtic Scottish establishment is laid bare for the world to see their treason.

In years to come…..2016 will be remembered as the year that, the Celtic supporters ‘took’ their club back.

    Watch this space…..

The point of requesting the mandates from those who want to provide them is threefold.

First, at the time of the original Resolution being proposed a number of shareholders signed up to give support but did so on the basis that their names etc were not passed to anyone other than Celtic PLC.

Those requests must be respected and honoured.

However, with the passage of time and as events have unfolded with the SFA hiding behind the so called issue of anonymity, more and more people have been in touch saying they do not mind their names being made known to the SFA and the other football authorities via the solcitors.

Now, it should be made plain that the board of Celtic PLC have vouched for the bona fides of the resolutioners to the SFA, and have confirmed that this resolution had sufficient support from shareholders in Celtic PLC that the board are legally obliged to at least consider the aims and objectives of the resolution, and that having so considered they see that there are matters to be pursued and which have been properly and legally brought to their attention.

Accordingly, anonymity is a bit of a red herring but it is a game Regan wants to play and so play it we will.

Remove anonymity, and you remove one of the two planks he has founded his refusal to answer upon.

    Second.

By gaining specific signed mandates addressed to the solicitors it clears them to write and act on behlaf of a body of shareholders – not just a couple of activists. It keeps the solicitors right and it means they have complied with all sorts of rules and obligations by which they are governed as a professional firm. That is important.

    Third

Those same solicitors, armed with the mandates, can continue to write to the SFA, UEFA and Celtic PLC representing a body of people with a demonstrable legitimate legal interest in Celtic PLC in particular and in Scottish football in general and as such can legitimately ask for certain matters to be answered, investigated and undertaken.

By providing a mandate, it alows the solicitors to negate the two planks upon which the SFA argument is thus far based — namely — anonymity of the clients and the stated desire to only deal with the member club — yet that club has been telling us that their stated position is that they want the SFA to answer “our shareholders”!

If the SFA are allowed to hold that position, then it means that all and any shareholders in any club which plays football in Scotland would not be entitled to request that the SFA answer any question on the governance of Scottish Football. We want to challenge that notion legally, and do so from the strongest possible position.

It is far from a delaying tactic.

I don’t think fans are polarised on the return of ‘Rangers’..I actually think that most fans are conflicted within themselves on thois issue. I include myself.

Part of me doesn’t care about their retuen and i believe they are not the same club..yet – I’d rejoice if we hammered them more than I would for the gubbing of any other club.

It’s the right thing to post on here that you don’t care that they are nothing to you, etc. However of you boycott the game then you are almost admitting their significance?

My view is I’ve loved the tribute act’s struggles in the lower league, I would never have cared if they had remained there. However now they look certain to be in the top flight – they will be our main rivals for the league so I take them seriously. I want to beat them more than any other team.
