Marginal advantages eventually come a cropper

458

One story which caught my eye last week was that we have 33 players out on international duty over this break, from a pool of 51 employed professionals (and that includes Derk Boerrigter). 13 Celtic players will join Scotland youth teams, with a further 6 going to other countries.

We know we can’t compete as we once did in the transfer market, so getting and developing the best youth talent has become an important part of the strategy.

All of this groundwork is for the long-term, though. Getting three points each Saturday and preparing for the challenges ahead is another question.

There was a moment on Saturday when Aberdeen manager, Derek McInnes, could have turned to his assistant and said, “If Killie hold on for another two minutes, the league is in our own hands”. That’s how close things got. Tom Rogic’s immaculate strike punctured that notion, before McInnes’ team’s second half collapse at Fir Park.

Now Aberdeen need us to drop seven points more than them, or eight if you consider goal difference. It’s not going to happen.  Aberdeen didn’t just slip up on Saturday due to a couple of defensive lapses, this result has been in the post for months.  They clawed their way into contention by gaining a series of marginal advantages – they haven’t won a game by more than a single goal since before Christmas – 14 games ago!

This season they have been ‘everyone’s favourite second team’ who have only just got over the line for three months of the season.  This is a statistical anomaly.  A more regular distribution of chances created and converted would have seen them win several of those games comfortably, but winning far fewer games.  Their dopplegangers in England, Leicester City, are benefiting from a similar phenomenon.  Both teams’ form could drop off a cliff next season, but the chances of either improving win ratios, if not performances, are slight.

Leicester are favourites to win in England because the behemoths, whose spending-power dwarfs most others, have been unable to dig deep to find a dirty win often enough.  Like Celtic’s on Saturday.  That, as we will soon declare, is why we’re champions!

Celtic PLC have assumed that the res12’rs sailed up the Clyde on a banana boat. 3 years of prevarication only to be outwitted with appeals/delays/clarifications and gaun yersel Tims from Lord of the Lies. Makes me want to puke.

As Awe naw Annoni, myself and a few others have highlighted these last 30 months you have made a flawed assumption in your magnificent efforts to bring the SFA to heel. You all assumed that Celtic PLC were Celtic supporters. They are not.

100 percent…and as a first step..it is up to the substantial but relatively small numbers of shareholding activists in this mission to engage or provide the route to engagement for those who are unaware, unresponsive or unmotivated by what appears to be an internet cause.

In Sharkey’s earlierI was standing with someone who has travelled all over the globe watching Celtic. He and I have endured and wallowed in preseason friendlies from Southampton to Warsaw to Krakow. one or other of us or both have scaled the heights of the Nou camp, trudged through the mud of San Siro, swanned across cities from Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Germany, France and so many others.

We’ve stood at Celtic Park and heard our own voices the crowds were so small.

He had NEVER heard of Res 12.

He has now…but I don’t think he actually cares too much.

As for fan ownership…I’ll come back to you on that later…..not because I disagree, but because what is important is what we then do with that ownership. That will take more than a post or two to explain.

But anyway till then, I think we are a like mind in looking to to the future and what we can do for ourselves. Has it ever really been that different?

The whole point of a PLC is that it is an ownership and profit distribution device. It is a legal nicety which serves no other purpose whatsoever and, in my very humble opinion, will never be a suitable device to satisfy the footballing aspirations of the supporters of a club of any size.

The employees of a PLC are, and always will be, answerable to the shareholders and investors. The seaon ticket holders, ticket purchasers, etc who follow a football club owned by way of a PLC with shareholders who own large blocks of shares and with investers and lenders, are the means – or one of the means at least – by which those large shareholders, lenders and investors achieve a return on their money.

That is the way such a venture works and always has worked.

Too late now, but along with the other wee challenges I’ve set myself I’ll try and compile my own personal “Eejits guide to establishing Celtic as the preeminent force for sporting integrity in a world of scurrilous blackhearts”. It may take me more than a a few days to sort it out….but let’s be honest, what more can a man or woman want than to eat, drink, be merry and calm the turbulent stomach of a sporting world gone mad…..oh and for Celtic to win the Champions League in 2018.

Back in 1993/94 just over 40% of shares in the CF&ACoLtd were held by Small Shareholders outwith the Board (including those disenfranchised and those shares effectively on the ‘Dead’ Register).

Thanks to various purchases and mandates to represent pre-93/94 (plus an individual with expert knowledge of Company Law) – a coordinated effort forced an EGM questioning the Board’s position.

Continuous pressure (effectively by Rhebels/Small Shareholders) – an AGM where the Board couldn’t provide answers – a Support now driven by Celts for Change subsequently led to the capitulation. 3 Board Members couldn’t meet ‘Personal Guarantees’. The rest as they say – is history!

Read that, and with respect to the author I would only say that perhaps he should check his facts before he went into print. It is worthy of a reply which I will get round to, however, I am gratfied to know that such a know it all has sat on their arse this last three years contemplating their naval but has managed to put a blog together with some rules being quoted in just over 40 minutes.

The entire issue of the anonymity has been discussed, thought through and indeed actioned which I will happily go into in some detail in the reply.

However, let me point out this without wanting to sound like a real clever clogs.

Before you write a letter, you should always consider and even anticpate what the reply is going to be and from whom it is going to come.

When it was decided to write directly to the SFA, and how that came about is actually pretty important and is a matter of record, it was fully anticipated that their qualified legal people would not answer any letter which was sent by any unidentified group of bloggers, correspondents, or unamed halfwits.

I would not have replied to such a letter in any detail either and had I been acting for the SFA I would have advised that they should not reply at all and that they should ignore the letter entirely.

To my amazement they didn’t do that.

But we knew that any reply would be of no substance, would found on anonymity of the writers, and without going into too much detail we fully anticipated their response and what it would be if it arrived at all.

    They did not disappoint.

They set out two very straightforward propositions namely that they would not respnd to an anonymous letter and that they would only deal with the substantive matters raised through the member club.

The request for mandates could have been made at any stage in the last few years, but it has been asked for now quite deliberately – and deliberately AFTER we had received the anticpated response to the SFA but before we now write to UEFA.

That is not an accident nor has it come about by happenstance.

In between times, there was a further letter from the solcitors, who identified the legal standing of the clients they were acting on behalf of, and who provided the SFA with details how that standing could be verified.

That was quite a deliberate tactic as well and once again, the potential replies were considered and predicted with uncanny accuracy.

Those replies are formal, recorded and official — they are also imperfect in their logic and open the door for further debate, enquiry and scrutiny. They also serve another purpose — but that is not for here and now.

As for the Celtic PLC Board — well they were only advised of certain steps after they were taken — again something which was quite deliberate and a matter of tactics.

    Mags McGill @11:54

See above. You presume that when it comes to the board of a PLC some of us came up the Clyde on a Water Biscuit.

The repeated warnings, obsrevations, etc etc of yourself and Awe Naw have not gone unnoticed, are well made and should not be ignored.

But you do remind me of the two ugly sisters ……. their presumptions and conclusions weren’t on the money either.

    Nor did the slipper fit.
