Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

    :-)

Its interesting how the dynamics involved when a transfer happens.Bosman introduced player power and freedom of contract, say for example wee fraser, means he can increase his earnings greatly.he is headin to his own country trying to consolidate his englan position in a career that only has a limited time.

We as fans are emotionally harvested wi every transfer.but we are up against a league that waves wads of dosh against those CL aspirations.the fact he experienced CL benefits his Cv, it benefits club in the money we make but we fans lose a keeper who broke club records while hoping another record breaker opts for us

I’m positive FF wants to leave.

What would you do if someone came along and offered to double or triple your wages?

FF knows what EPL players earn and I’m sure we can’t match them.

Southampton received nearly 77 million pounds last season from EPL payouts.

I know they have large debts but when you consider what they’ve earned in the close season from player sales, they can afford to match FF’s demands.

That 77 million is bottom line money with no cost of sale.

Our board would all die of heart attacks if someone offered them this amount of prize money.

And we’d probably all be dropping in the street with delirium.

Sydney Tim – I understand the frustration – but come on ! This happens all the time in football, all across the globe – when a player wants to go, its fairly certain that will happen. We just need to accept this.. unless you think we can keep these guys for the crazy excitement of the SPL and the occasional Scottish Cup win ?

How is then that we have managed to hold on to the best football CEO in the UK, and pay his particularly high salary for circa ten years, despite Arsenal knocking at door looking for him?

I can’t remember the last time Arsenal came knocking at our door for someone. Maybe we should start trading board members rather than players?

  4. Rogic is still listed as a first team player, but I haven’t seen him feature in any pre season or development squad games.

Is he surplus to requirements or still in Melbourne?

  5. FFM. PL CV was of a a cost cutting financial director

He has never known to invest to improve companies

He will always put his own salary and bonus before the team

While I was shocked at last weeks shambles , I started to see a ground swell of support for change

Even happy clapper Rouge leader wanted change

Think we are going backwards again

  6. FFM – You’ve lost me now, on another debate completely… re CEO as opposed to Players – So….. goodnight !

  7. Larrybhoy @ 03:50

No apology needed, but thank you anyway.

Of course players will be looking for a better financial reward.

    This comes into contract negotiation.

We should be better off by tying a promising player to a new contract with a 20% wage hike, by using this development strategy to increase his sell on value even further. In turn, once such a player is sold (not after season 1-2 but after seasons 3-6) the wage bill decreases significantly, and said player is replaced by his understudy who has been broken in over the prevous 2 seasons.

    This isn’t what we do.

We seem to be grabbing every quick penny from wherever we can get it.

This is what should be alarming folk.

I think DD is planning to sell up and move on, and is cashing in quick using a 5 year plan which he started 2-3 years ago. I don’t know. But something has been seriously wrong for some time, and it makes me despair that folk here, who should know better, can’t seem to see it.

We have all known players at our club and other clubs taking to the press and forcing a move

Big vic had said last close season that he was looking forward to another crack at CL

Foster has never said he wanted to leave

Both players have been sold for AGM balance sheets

The foster transfer leaves a bad taste in the mouth as it is just before a crucial CL qualifier

    ———

Big Vic turned down a new contract. If he wanted a crack at the CL he could have signed it and turned down a move to Southampton.

Forster could turn down a move to Southampton. He won’t. Because he wants to leave. He wants more money. He wants to play in the EPL. And I don’t blame him.

Could we have kept him for the Maribor game? Ideally yes. But then Southampton’s season starts next week, they will want him in now, and could walk away from the deal if we don’t sell. He could get injured and the deal is off. He threw his jersey into the crowd on wednesday because he knew he was leaving. At least this way we get time to spend it, we need to invest in other areas. I’ll wait and see who we bring in before passing judgement.

For the record I renewed my season ticket after GS 3rd title in a row, and then promptly cancelled it after we failed to strengthen that summer. Took me until this season to get one back.

    Pedro @ 03:30,

I hope you’re right about the academy – you’ve a far better grasp of what’s happening with the youngsters today than me.

But will it benefit the team, if we uncover two Aiden McGeadies and then sell them at a half of their EPL sell-on value after they’ve given us one season of good football?

The sell-on strategy for young players is not managed well either. We should be giving players 3-5 years to increase their value, not selling them after 1-2 seasons. The average age of Lenny’s team was very low, yet we still couldn’t wait to punt players on and grab the under-sale cash.

It stinks every way you look at it.

Inefficient I would disagree with, especially financially. Incompetent, I would agree with that to a point, especially when it comes to strengthening from a position of success, a hereditary problem of all Celtic boards.

Your forgetting a valid point when it comes to football competitions though and this is in no way trying to minimize or excuse the failings of the board’s current policy. We have no right to be in the top tier competition of European every season because of who we are.

I agree I would not have the board members collect such lucrative remunerations, it may be an issue for a future AGM.

  11. An Tearmann @ 03:52,

    I don’t get this.

If FF is mainly driven by a desire to play for England, he has already done it. To further this career, he should be playing in the CL.

We are the best club – sorry, we SHOULD be the best club to offer this).

We are paying high wages according the board spin of recent weeks here on CQN.

    So why would he leave?

There are uncertainties there, but there is one certain that we certainly know we can be certain about, and that is that the cash coffers will be well swollen by his sale.

I don’t disagree with the policy being spun at us by certain spinners – but – if we were doing it properly, we would be developping players over 3-6 seasons, not 1-3 seasons.

I’m certain that there is something certainly wrong with the certainty at CP, and that, bearing in mind we also have the unkowns that we know about, and the knowns that we only know a little about, we might as well have Donald Rumsfeld running the feckin show :))

  13. 24 And Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came to Him to show Him the buildings of the temple.

2 And Jesus said unto them, “See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

3 And as He sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of Thy coming and of the end of the world?”

    4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, “Take heed that no man deceive you;

5 for many shall come in My name, saying, ‘I am Christ,’ and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that ye be not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.

10 And then shall many lose faith and shall betray one another and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come.

15 “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoso readeth, let him understand),

16 then let them that be in Judea flee unto the mountains.

    17 Let him that is on the housetop not come down to take anything out of his house;

18 neither let him that is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day.

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And unless those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved; but for the elect’s sake, those days shall be shortened.

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, ‘Lo, here is Christ,’ or ‘there,’ believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false christs and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25 Behold, I have told you before.

26 Therefore, if they shall say unto you, ‘Behold, He is in the desert!’ go not forth; or ‘Behold, He is in the secret chambers!’ believe it not.

27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

28 For wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken,

30 and then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and with great glory.

31 And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32 “Now learn a parable of the fig tree: When his branch is yet tender and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh.

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.

36 But of that day and hour, knoweth no man, no, not the angels of Heaven, but My Father only.

37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark

39 and knew not until the flood came and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken and the other left.

41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken and the other left.

42 “Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken into.

44 Therefore be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of Man cometh.

45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

46 Blessed is that servant whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing.

47 Verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

48 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, ‘My lord delayeth his coming,’

49 and shall begin to smite his fellow servants and to eat and drink with the drunken,

50 the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

51 and shall cut him asunder and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

On the other hand, I agree that FF probably wants to move on now – he’s been here for a few years now and seen a change of manager. He is ready to move on and further his career.

It’s the other players who have been punted amidst the same old spin that they want more money and want exposure in England. Which is utter nonsense imo.

It really gets up my tits every time one of our good players is sold and the news is followed by a ton of posts along the lines of “GIRUY sell-out-player, we don’t like you for leaving”.

I think champagne would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Introduce uncertainty(the Celtic plague) on who will join the club. Will they be a Henrik or a Boerigter? Give them a tough tie with a real together team like Maribor and lets shake the dice.

The over-achievement is largely down to the support. This board attacks the support.

I’m afraid I have to re-iterate, this goes well beyond incompetence imo.

We could debate this for days and resolve nothing but just ride the perpetual happy clapping/mineshafter ride. It will not solve anything.

The support as a mass movement will come to a critical juncture if it feels the board are ruining our club. The fact we have not got to that point tells it’s own story. Time will tell how we move forward. It’s a huge season not just for the team & support, but also for the board.
