Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

I agree with pretty much all you said there. As for spending wisely, I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but the first thing I’d suggest is that we cut down on buying players who are no better than what we have. I’d rather sign one experienced guy than 3 projects. I can’t believe we don’t have our own youngsters who could be as good as those you mention with some game time under their belts. They might not be, but we don’t have to spend millions to find out. Millions that could be spent on the experience I’ve mentioned, or at least genuinely promising youngsters/projects instead of guys who most of us can see never had a chance – Balde?

As for a solution, it’s difficult without knowing exactly what the signing process is. If the scouts are suggesting these guys then changes are needed. If the board are doing sums & pressurising the manager into taking guys in the hope of unearthing a money maker then we have huge problems. We got lucky with Vic & VVD. Even Ki. But apart from FF, who was the last guy we actually went out & got because we knew they would make us a lot stronger?

gordybhoy64, sorry I missed out the second part of your question but my answer is the same.

Th chances of a 10 McCallan appreciating anything in value in our lifetime is remote unless it’s a very special / one off bottling. Google it and see. If its going to increase by 100% in the next 20 years drink it tomorrow.

Me too, it’s a drink I’m slowly starting to appreciate though so any advice for avoiding the dross is welcome. The surprising thing about my lack of whiskey knowledge is that both my sisters manage pubs and I have never once asked them what is a good whiskey lol

I got the impression yesterday that Ronny would rather go into the EL this season as he knows he has a massive job with this squad and getting mauled heavily in the CL might not be the best of first seasons for the whole of the Club.

Also, AFAIK, Fraser has not officially left yet but it is likely to go through today.

    ——————————————-

Yeah. That’s my guess at the signing process – but who the hell knows. One thing we can all see is that it ain’t working out. So some kind of change is needed. Only other thing I’d add is that I am very sceptical of the transfer values quoted in the papers (both in and out). I’d imagine that each individual deal has it’s own conditions etc. So when we “signed” Craig Gordon, I’d be surprised if he was on anything other than a pretty basic 1st team wage at best – perhaps pay-as-you-play basis, bearing in mind this is a guy who hasn’t played a competitive game for a couple of years and who is a risk. I imagine the cost of that risk will be factored into whatever deal has been agreed.

However, as we said the most obvious fault is that we’re not getting enough bang for our buck. There’s a few youth players who would appear to be as good or better than what we’ve recently bought. I only hope that this has been picked up and that someone is trying to remedy the situation. On transfer fees – I’m more of the opinion that what might scupper a deal is the player wanting a big contract rather than a club baulking at a transfer fee. Just a hunch though…

Petec, cheers for the answer on the big goalie. I’ll miss him when / if he leaves but I think Gordon will be a smash at Celtic in the same way as other non Celt (Scottish) players have been for us. Kenny D and Broony are two examples separated by at least a generation.

Let me reword my last post.

I hope we don’t sell James Forrest this season. He’s one player who could still ignite our passion if he chucks the hauns in the air after being fouled and man’s up a bit.

On the youth players. I’m genuinely hopeful that RD could do something here, as was put out as part of his remit when he came in. I think NL did a fantastic job for us when he came in, but my biggest gripe I had was continual failure to give young guys some time when league games were won, often with 20-30 mins to go. I know he’s had a tough start, but I think some underestimate the circumstances. He’s been asked to negotiate some real high pressure games with no new players & some who’s heads appear to be on their next move. It was always going to be a hard task to have a settled team ready to fire on all cylinders. Not saying he didn’t make mistakes – away in Warsaw was a disaster from the start. The pressure was really on him after Wednesday & I fear he might not have survived if we went out the EL qualifier. For me, since I have some faith in him, I think the luck we got yesterday has more weight as I think he can relax a bit to a certain extent. I think he’ll just want to get Maribor out the way, whatever the result (providing it’s not a disaster), so he can get a run of league games under his belt to find a more settled team to work from. The closing of the transfer window, hopefully with a few additions, will help with this also.

The big error he seems to have made is being too open with his new charges. He should have kept his demands lower key and got rid of those not meeting his standards further down the line. It seems that some or several of the squad have railed against him.

Could be wrong of course but it seems that way.

  26. A Ceiler Gonof Rust 01:26,

I agree the big guy was amazing for us, maybe one day in the future he will play for us again. I liked a comment earlier about popping in to get a big cheer, the Celtic Support appreciate all he has given to the Celtic cause. The way it should be.

This one year turnaround stuff really annoys me.

If Craig stays fit, he will indeed be an excellent acquisition.

The wee guy plays against the year younger Hoops on Sunday, he knows it is gonnae be a real tough game, I’m really looking forward to seeing the under 14s as the year older were sensational the Time I saw them and seem to be getting better and better as they take on Europes finest.

Ronny is there for the Future, IMO….There is still the present that needs to be properly addressed.
