Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

    Goodnight Celtic men and wummin.

    Mr Z, my heart goes out to you as a supporter of a team who in football terms are light years ahead of my little Scottish club. Your team showed their superiority over both legs of the qualifier and it must be painful to see us advance in the way we did.

    I hope to meet you again in Glasgow or Poland one day. Please don’t let what happened here sour your love for Glasgow, Celtic and the Friends you have made here.

    You are Legia, You are Celtic and we love you for it.

    Hail Hail bruv

  2. ST,

    It’s blatant.

    Sell an every game goal scorer for a few million, and cross the fingers that the £20M from CL qualification just happens.

    Anyone who has slight intelligence knows that for a business to succeed, it needs investment. Grabbing the pennies while running the business down goes by another name.

    And the same people here championing this approach have the cheek to laugh at the huns.

    The money thing would never have caught my attention though, if I hadn’t started to see the utter contempt with which this board treat the Celtic support. Disgusting.

    They need to go, DD and the rest, right fecking now.

    And I’m a tolerant person who always looks for the good in folk.

    I think the blindness comes from the board’s relationship with the MSM. Any good spin about Celtic in the rags is grabbed with both hands by the readers. This is why they are still welcome at CP. It’s also why every recurring evil they commit against the club is ignored, and why the Celtic Board where scared to come out with any comment about the treatment of Lenny during hunmaggeddon. Especially when they saw the pound signs flashing as the Celtic support rallied behind NL. I can see this board for what it is now, and it makes my skin crawl.

    Bit of a dilemma with the team at the moment for PL – do we trust the manager and replace the whole team, or ditch him in 3 months when things go from bad to worse.

    It’s a very very difficult position, but we are only in this sittuation because penny management has led to every decent manager walking away from the club.

    To call this great fiscal management is nonsense. If every CL campaign averages at a worth of £20M, we have thrown away 60 by letting the huns do what they do, and then another 20 this year.

    The departpure of Lenny and Sammy is crying out that something is wrong. We should have been investing 5-10M in Lenny choosing his own players. This board is about grabbing every penny at the expense of the club while cheating the support like idiots. Who benefits from this money grabbing? The ordinary share-holders or someone who has a bulk stake in the club and has the final say on how it is run?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I know that the Good Guys win, in the end. It is a story and a half, MAGNIFICENT.
    It may not seem obvious to all of us now, perhaps we are downsizing because it is what God wants for all the Humble of this World and not the Dermots of this World.
    Look around………..
    I really hope the Sandy Lane ‘Gentlemen’ Rejected Masonry when they let pictures out that didn’t have Jetskis with the symbols of compasses and squares emblazoned on the front and the sides.
  4. Can anyone believe that is possible to keep players who are offered a contact in the EPL ? every player who has gone to the EPL in the last 2 years would have gone regardless of any attempt to keep them
    Wake up !!!!!!
  5. Just Another Tim @ 02:32
    Money. I think from what you say you look for the good in folk like most of us.
    So we trust the board to manage the cash and not overpay themselves.
    The clues have been there for some time though, that their first interest is NOT the club. The club is nothing without the supporters. They treat the support with total contempt, in every aspect. That’s the evidence that they are at it, and we are being played for mugs.
    When young boys are having their careers ruined and being thrown in jail because of this board, and we still have people posting here – watch for this – the same ones attack the support, the players and the management, but will not hear a bad word said about the suits. Disgusting, and NOT true to who we are. Like I said just there – makes my feckin skin crawl.
    I’d refer anyone to Big Nan’s comments on this. He’s seen it all before, yet has the strength to continue fighting against these b@st@ards who treat us all like idiots.
    His battles with the Scottish government on freemasonry are beyond courageous.
  6. Big FF gone, but leaves as a fan of our Club…like Henke, Lubo….and many others. Probably the best years of their lives. For me the best new player/fan was Chris Sutton.
    As an “import”……who did not know the history…..became a fabulous player and fan
    Who does anyone else think embraced Celtic more in recent times ?
  7. skyisalandfill on
    ACGR if you are still about. Apologies. Neglected to read the entire post. link wood is special Whisky. it was the first distillery I ever worked at. At the time, there were two sides. The new still with condensers and the old side, the traditional still with worm tubs. great Whisky. I wil send you another email.
  8. Pedro @ 02:45,
    I hear you regards downsizing and humility – if we could the first club to lead the way in a non-financially motivated football world, then we’d all be up for it I believe.
    But at the moment, supporters are digging deep into their pockets to fund the club they love, while the suits pocket it, and treat the children of those paying their wages with total contempt. This isn’t about “entertainment” and buying players – it’s about what’s these people are doing to the Celtic support, and how the “happy-clappers” clap away as long as it doesn’t happen to anyone in their own family.
    Example:
    I’d ask any board supporter here to tell me if they have had anyone in their family arrested or harassed on match day in the past 4 years.
  9. Ger57. Kris commons is not one of our strikers
    As I said we have not had a striker top of League scoring charts for about 3 years Yes or no ?
    Wake up?
    I’m sorry – you’re questioning my intelligence?
    Why would Hooper and Wanyama ditch CL football ( a bigger stage, and better for their development – remember they are young players)?
    To go to Southampton?
    You believe that they made these choices themselves?
    The Celtic board were just lucky that they happened to cash in on circa £12M?
    Aye, okay, I’ll wake up while you continue to believe pish like that.
    Every player that has been sold has seen stories preceding the sale about how he wants to love to England for more exposure. It’s spin pish coming from the Celtic board, and if you don’t have the intelligence to be aware of that, then please don’t have the moronic arrogance to tell everyone else to “wake up”.
    Maybe you can also look at my question at 03:01 .
  11. ger57,
    I love all the things Kris (and his wife) does for Celtic charities and I think he is brilliant in the SPL. The Truth is, he isn’t good enough to play that crucial position in the CL, IMO.
    Kojo always calls it straight when it comes to Celtic performances, I hope most people can accept that by now.
    If we got £1M for Kris, I’d be over the moon and Howlin.
  12. Larry bhoy we have a CL qualifier
    FF transfer can wait for the good of the team
    See that phrase ” for the good of the team “. We now did for the good of the balance sheet
    I see what is happening, I always said to my Son, NEVER boo.
    Well, never ever say NEVER… is a phrase that is older than me and my ideals.
    I’m sorry, we are going to have to agree to disagree on some aspects of your reply.
    I do tend to look on the the good in people, as a general life outlook taught to me by my wonderful parents. That is not to diminish any opinion you have on the club and how it is being run.
    If our board, as you see it, only have selfish interests, why have we not went the way of the hun? Why are we debating how we are not spending the surplus of cash that we all seem to think they are holding onto like a Wall Street banker witnessing a stock market collapse?
    I think we all have to take a step back and try and see the bigger picture from a custodian mentality. Am I happy at some of the policies and decisions they make? Of course not. It is beyond infuriating at times.
    Would I rather we had a safe economic footing and outlook, you bet your bottom dollar I do. The board is not perfect, our team is far from perfect at the moment and the unhappiness and growing resentment within the support is understandable.
    I’m not a happy clapper, I’m not a mineshafter. I am a Celtic supporter. If it get’s to the point that I have to protest our board I will. I think we are far from it, poor as we are as a football at this point and as frustrating at the lack of communication from the board is, what would you rather have?
    Like I have said, we should be in a position to strengthen if we need to, to one or 2 key positions, when needed, while simultainsoeulsy developing young talent and undiscovered gems. I think this is the long term plan of this board. At the moment, the majority of us are seeing things short term.
    As for the issues around other aspects of the boards behavior towards the GB, policing, RES 12 et al, there are far more intelligent supporters than both of us that are fighting those issues.
    This board is far from perfect. This is our club and will forever be. If they do not have our interests at heart I assure you I will be the first on the South Stand entrance calling for action.
    At this point, I am both a supporter and critic of our board.
  15. Sydney Tim – What planet are you on ? FF is going – why ? Significantly more Money and prospects – do you seriously think we can offer up better prospects ?
  16. Pedro,
    “Incidentally, I think Ronny is the Man, most definitely. BACK the man.”
    See, this is the thing.
    Even despite the complaint I’m making, a defender of this board needs to justify the board by their results.
    Yet again, we have been a surprise situation of replacing the manager weeks before the all-important £20M CL qualifiers.
    Yet again, we fail.
    Yet again, the new manager needs a complete revamp of the squad before we can tell if he knows what he’s doing.
    According to the happy clappers here, this is good management from the Celtic board. And this is actually the least important of my complaints about them.
  17. When dropped off, I was saying to Aidan, that Delaneys is a bit mad, I’m thinking about him talking about MDMA and Special cigs, and the wee man says, naw you are a lot madder.
    DD, you want a new Son!!!! :))
  18. FFM – I’m the only conspiracy theorist in the village)
    Why would Hooper and Wanyama ditch CL football ( a bigger stage, and better for their development – remember they are young players)?
    To go to Southampton?
    ——–
    First of all, it’s potential CL football, as the past few weeks(and Karagandy last year) should have made you well aware, versus guaranteed EPL exposure. If they succeed at Southampton, then moves to Liverpool, Man United etc open up.
    More importantly, for the players concerned, the chance to double / treble / quadruple their wages is something 99% of players would take. We can either cash on players when there is optimum value, or keep unhappy players and let them go on Bosmans.
    The food chain relating to us goes something like this:
    Dundee Utd < Celtic < Any of the 14 clubs making up the numbers in EPL < EPL top 6 < Barca or Real.
    It's really not that difficult.
  19. Larry bhoy. He is signed to us
    We have an important CL qualifiers
    Our no2 keeper has proved before he is not up to CL qualifiers
    Our no 3 keeper has not played a competitive game in over 3 years
    Thousand of players do not get the move they want as they are tied to clubs under Contract
    I am a fan of Celtic not FF
    I want the strongest Celtic team for our play off game
    Not interested in adding more cash in bank and weakling our team ( see vic transfer of last year )
  20. FFm – my point is that players that we buy that are very good will inevitably get exposure in the Champions League, and will then be offered significantly better financial opportunities,,, and they will take them… that’s it.
  21. Gooooooood evening Moonhowlers and people like me on the other side of this planet. Just popped in to say that if Big FF is sold for 10m then I for one will be gutted. If the big man was playing in the EPL right now he would be punted for at least 20m. A CL quality keeper commands that fee and he is defo one IMO.
    I am sick and tired of these smaller teams being able to offer a pittance just because he plays in the SPL. I hope PL has a sell on clause.
  22. Larrybhoy
    “do you seriously think we can offer up better prospects ?”
    I despair – this opinion comes from the board lackey spin of the past 5 years.
    FF was in the World Cup squad for England. Do you think he would have had a better chance if he we sold him to feckin Southampton for £10M and he’d jump at that chance, or do you not think that just maybe, it might have been the Celtic board who would push for such a move to get the £10M?
    Do you honestly think PL and DD are sitting crying in the board room:
    “Awe naw, we need to free him. We’ve lost big Fraser”, while their tears drip down and ruin the £10M cheque ?? Oh, the pain. FFS yourself. Open YOUR eyes.
    I like Ronny D.
    He has put peoples noses out of joint. Next pre-season should be interesting, given what he has said about preparation, taking on that PLC and the determination to make a fast buck.
    I think our Academy is not quite Ripe for the harvest but it will be soon.
  24. Larrybhoy @ 03:23,
    “my point is that players that we buy that are very good will inevitably get exposure in the Champions League, and will then be offered significantly better financial opportunities,,, and they will take them… that’s it”.
    And my point my friend is that why do you make this assumption that every player is dying to leave Celtic for a better opportunity.
    You said “follow the money”.
    This leads to the door of the Celtic boardroom every time.
    Players are being FORCED out, they are not all dying to leave Celtic Park you know. Some of them were happy there.
    I think Lenny actually enjoyed his job you know, and found it worthwhile enduring what he had to so that he could continue to enjoy it.
    But no doubt you’ll believe he left after 3 years because he didn’t think Celtic were a big enough club for him, and that poor PL was forced to feed us spin nonsense about how Roy Keane wasn’t the first name to pop into his and DD’s football genius nappers.
  25. Sydney Tim – I understand the frustration – but come on ! This happens all the time in football, all across the globe – when a player wants to go, its fairly certain that will happen. We just need to accept this.. unless you think we can keep these guys for the crazy excitement of the SPL and the occasional Scottish Cup win ?
  26. Just Another Tim @ 03:16
    You make some good points.
    I felt the same myself once.
    But at the very least, this board are inefficient.
    To build on the success under Lenny required investment.
    They refused to do it. To mismanage to this extent that CL revenue of c£20M is lost is beyond incompetence.
    And when you put this into perspective, and look at the other issues, many of which are contributing to falling attendance, it is impossible to give them any more credence.
    All the more so when you see them getting richer while the club goes backwards.
    And like I’ve said – their financial mis-management is the least of my concerns about them.
    There are thousands of people out there who would do a far better job at a quarter of the wages they are taking (never mind share bonuses).
  27. We have all known players at our club and other clubs taking to the press and forcing a move
    Big vic had said last close season that he was looking forward to another crack at CL
    Foster has never said he wanted to leave
    Both players have been sold for AGM balance sheets
    The foster transfer leaves a bad taste in the mouth as it is just before a crucial CL qualifier
  28. JonnyRambo67
    “The food chain relating to us goes something like this:
    —-
    You had me at "it's potential CL".
    Then you lost me with your last comment – "It's really not that difficult."
    Am I being stupid? We sell the best players we have weeks before CL qualifiers, which are worth £20M to the club every year.
    We treat the supporters like shite and then send emails 5 times a week asking them to come back to support the bhoys.
    Yep, it really, really, really, isn't that difficult.
    If you have every worked for yourself, or owned a business, or watched Dragon's Den, you should understand that for a business to continue or start being successful, it needs investment.
    Draining a business of cash at the expense of further revenue is NOT good management.
    It's really not that difficult to understand this.
    What am I missing? You clearly have a head for business, which explains your love of the current financial managers at Celtic.
  29. FFM – sorry, didn’t mean to be offensive in any way – all I’m saying is that if players see significantly better financial opportunities they will take them. We bankrolled some great talent before but it cost us big time, and put us in a loss making situation. I think those days are gone.
  30. Pedro @ 03:30,
    I hope you’re right about the academy – you’ve a far better grasp of what’s happening with the youngsters today than me.
    But will it benefit the team, if we uncover two Aiden McGeadies and then sell them at a half of their EPL sell-on value after they’ve given us one season of good football?
    The sell-on strategy for young players is not managed well either. We should be giving players 3-5 years to increase their value, not selling them after 1-2 seasons. The average age of Lenny’s team was very low, yet we still couldn’t wait to punt players on and grab the under-sale cash.
    It stinks every way you look at it.
