Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round. Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray. Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.
Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England. They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

I remember being in the school playground the day after that 6-2 hammering at Falkirk and talking about how rotten must be. When Thistle were beating us at Parkhead the following Saturday I said to my old man something like ‘da are we ever going to be a good team?’ I distinctly remember him repying ‘ach dont worry son, stick by the Celtic, we’ll win the league this season’. As a gullible ten year old even I wasnt buying into this.
But he was right. Stein’s transformation of CFC in 24 months was nothing short of incredible. From finishing 8th in the league 1965, to Champions of Europe 1967.

Here’s a novel idea. When a footballer signs a contract, it is a 2-way street. This means that while the contract is current, the player cannot walk out and join another club without the permission and agreement of the club holding said contract.
Similarly – are you paying attention FFM and Sydney Tim – the club can agree to transfer the player to another club, but the player has the power to refuse to transfer. Yes, Fraser Forster could have said to Peter Lawwell, “Sorry but I am staying at Celtic.”
In fact, when Celtic accepted Southampton’s bid, Fraser would have been informed and asked if he was interested in the transfer. Indeed it has happened in the past where a player has said, “No thanks. I’ll wait for a bigger club.”
It has also been the case where a player refusing a transfer is told that if he doesn’t agree to the move he will not kick another ball for the selling club – Sir Alex was notorious for that particular strategy – but it only applies to players who are surplus to requirements.
It’s not rocket science. Or perhaps it is when you are stuck in an agenda and can’t see the woods for the trees.

PL needs to cash in on his popularity now and get him sold, I hear Real Madrid and Barcelona have declared interest.
I asked last night for anyone to name me a player who would sign for our club in the £5m bracket. A player Who would come to play in our pathetic wee one horse league in front of 5 million folk ? A player who would genuinely improve our squad.
Not one answer.
Reduce the amount to £4m or even £3m and you see our CEO and our clubs problem.
Magnified by the fact we are at the peak of a sellers market with no value to be had and our support are screaming for action and therefore weakening our position further.
Not easy. A fundamental strategy review is needed as the one which served us well is now outdated.
Sadly that won’t appease the support. Who just want to see money spent. Regardless of logic highlighted above.
Frustrating for everyone. But it could be worse. We could be in the championship and not even know who owned our club never mind the CL qualifier round.

It is inevitable that Celtic will be on the slide downwards until we are granted access to a league with greater opportunity. Right now we are sitting at the top of the hill.. But the hill is crumbling beneath us.
What frustrates me is that there is no message being given that this situation is even noted that measures or attempts to respond to this are underway. Instead we get BS to disguise the fact that the policy is one of sell any decent prospect we can.
As long as we are on top of the Scottish hill it doesn’t matter what size the hill is. That’s the limits of our Board’s strategy.

To all the Ronny detractors who tbh have sounded in the main like hurting huns with their knee jerk, frankly, stupid assessments of the new manager’s abilities when in truth they know next to nothing about his strengths and weaknesses.
In a very short space of time, Ronny has shown his true credentials as a talented manager when he orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks ever in the history of football: 6-1 down with 3 mins to go and we end up winning on away goals.
His appointment is a PL masterstroke.
Go on, eat humble pie and admit that l’m right!!!

The current team under Delia will not beat Maribor. They were rank against Legia and never even contested the 50 50s. There is a desperate need for a midfielder and a striker for the Maribor games and a defender would not go amiss as Virgil has chucked it.
Lawwell could fix this ….but I don’t think he will. He will take the Forster money, sell Virgil go to Europa league and use the season for a ‘transition’ and of course bank his bonus which will take him earnings from the club to £11M
Of course there will be the usual we tried and failed ( like fletcher etc ) and the gullible amongst our support will believe it.
Lawwell will single handedly ensure Celtic fail this second chance.

You always had me puzzled as Stevie woods spent ten minutes crossing balls into the area for you to come out and catch … Then once the match started you were glued to your line .
Overall I would say you were one of the best keepers we had in my lifetime but that wouldn’t really be difficult as most since the 70s have been rotten or average .
I fully expect VVD to leave .. Possibly after Maribor ( play for your move ) and hopefully we have scraped into the CL groups and re-invest a chunk of money on some much needed new blood
