Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. Loving all the armchair quarter backs who think it is just about spending money.

Loving the half wits who seem to be jumping on a bandwagon to spend even more money in a price bracket which never gives value at the height of the ‘sellers market’.

Loving the insanity of ignorants who cannot name a player who would genuinely improve our squad who might consider coming to our pathetic wee non competitive league yet still want us to spend for the sake of it.

Can some one please tell me who playing abroad would come here for money or development for £5m transfer money who would make us better ?????

  2. Given the rather fortuitous circumstances

that allowed us into the CL qualification round

i would hope the board see fit to ensure CP is

filled to near capacity for our game against Maribor.

PFayr, here’s something that will cheer you up. When my princess acgr is finished her time on the YWTC, she’s going to Cambodia to help hanf Pol Pot’s buddies.

I’m bursting with pride that my daughter will help string up war criminals that were in vogue (not the vogue, ffs VP gie’s a break man) beore I had a clue whit ma boaby wiz for.

Hope that cheered you up big chap.

  4. The fact that we brought Fraser here on loan 1st or that fans did not have faith in him doesn’t matter

Lads we have a CL qualifier and we have just sold one of our best players

As far as I am concerned we have a no 1 who has proved before in CL qualifiers he is not up to it and a back up who has hardly played a game in 3 years

  5. ACGR,

sorry I haven’t got round to mailing you about the whisky,

will do so over the weekend if that’s ok

  6. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Cup Winners, that 3 1 game was Charlie ‘I’m an Arse sorry Arsenal Man’ Nicholas first goals against them.

Roy worked a great one two with the original hun bomber, Colin Jackson, for the goal.

The best bit about it was when Roy was running by the beelin bears, one of their stylish fans with a seventies hair style and a brown jacket on (I wish my mind was as broad as his lapels), was giving him pelters. in true sticky bun style.

Sydney, if the board don’t sanction some spend on a bit of quality, the disconnect some of us feel with the club will widen even more.

Brogan , further to your post earlier today re Steve Earle. He appeared in the Sky Atlantic/HBO, programme, Treme. It was about New Orleans in the years after the hurricane in 2006. In one scene he is busking with Spider Stacey of the Pogues. They sing Come out ye Black & Tans.

I know you don’t watch sky but the scene should be available on Youtube

Big Fraser leaving doesn’t fill me with worry in the goalkeeper department. Sure Craig Gordon has had a miserable last few years but would we have signed him if we thought he would be injured?

I think he needs a chance to regain the form that made Sunderland pay £9 million for him. If that fails we have a young prospect in Fasan who looked liked he had the attributes to be a very good keeper. We will see what happens in the course of the season.

You’re so far removed from a football fan it hurts

I’ve continually chided you about your stupid request for mere fans to do the job of handsomely paid executives

Give it a rest ..your position is ill founded and stupid

  9. burnley78

What’s your solution? I haven’t seen anyone suggesting signing £5m players is the only answer. As for ignorance, do you not understand that we employ people with access to far more information on players in the uk & beyond than any of us ‘armchair quarter backs’?

  10. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Burnley78, I tried some of the beers you donated at the cqn golf day.

I just got a new one off the press today. 12 Y.O. Linkwood finished in an Oloroso cask for its final 18 months It’s a thing of beauty and 57.2% ABV.

With respect that was a wee bit harsh ? For the most part the guys on the blog are just discussing the club, our hopes, fears, ideas, frustrations et al.

Your last point about which players abroad would improve Celtic is really impossible to answer for most, as few of us see any player regularly enough to judge their playing ability, let alone discern their other traits.

  12. burnley78

With all due respect that post is bullshit.

Calling people ignorant for expressing an opinion is very poor IMHO.

And seen nobody would want to come to our wee non competitive league we would be as well as calling it a day and shutting up shop.

Very poor just because people want some investment in the team.

Fair point but there are enough dissenters on here not least of all yourself , that it’s unlikely this blog is going to be overwhelmed by happy clappers.

My own view is that every enterprise goes through change and change is never easily achieved especially if it’s forced on you. Were in transition now and that’s going to be tough on us all.

As long as were in shape for next year when Sevco are borne into the Premiership on a litter with garlands as the saviours of Scottish football I’ll be okay with the grief in the meantime.

Are we hoarding for that day ? Maybe so and if we are I’m okay with that.

Too good a day today for friction.

In which case the signing of Amido Balde, Derk Boerrigter, Teemu Pukki and Craig Gordon must be seen for what it is – good judgement from our scouting staff.

  23. Apologies for going to the dark side for a minute, but if have a question I hope someone can answer….

Just read Phil’s latest article – seems money its running perilously low in Govan again (no, really).

Question is this – how can the new Huns ignore the normal rules of football and not sell a player to cover their losses?

Not only that, they signed 4 new player, but can’t pay bills. I know 5 left, but that is beside the point.

Wallace is worth £800,000+. An assortment of black, bell, templeton etc another £500,000.

    Why are they not selling?

Season ticket sales can’t be the full answer. Can it?

  24. And Wee Wiess is slagging off the Tic, heard a wee rumour he was binned shortly after a big game, us, for failing to warm down, he didn’t play…..was above him apparently. I Iove Irn Bru some like Coke a cola..

Are you suggesting that the club should have said at the time that CG was brought in to replace FF? Surely that would weaken our position when it came to negotiations to sell?

As for BS, surely only the most

naive couldn’t see what was happening? We got CG in early enough to assess his fitness properly. I would be surprised if he hasn’t proved it as well as could be expected in that time.
