Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Is that right? Why don’t we just go get whoever RD wants then?

Of course we have limited funds. We have to spend them more wisely though. The amount we’ve spent on players no better than what we had at the time over the past 5 years is obscene.

  2. Cannot believe the shift in fortunes in 48 hours.

We left Murrayfield completely bewildered after an utterly inept display

yet fortune has given us the chance of making it to the CL group stages.

Football is a funny old game.

Because he sees the things I and others I know have seen for ages. I honestly think he sent out his best team the other night, that the players weren’t up to it was more a reflection on them than his tactics. Someone who can take a team similar to Dumbarton, in Scottish terms, to the top of his national league is worth persevering with.

Our problem is the type of player we have recruited over the previous 3 years or so.

I have heard from a reliable source that RD and PL have had words over the last few days, that makes me think RD isn’t anyones fool.

Gordon was described on these pages as a guy looking for work …I , amongst others , suggested he was a replacement off FF….that notion was traduced

Just logged on and reading from the top of the page looks like it’s a definite big Fraser is off. He’s been a good goalie for us, not brilliant but good. He came of age when he saved the penalty v the mini buns in the dyeing minutes and went onto make some crucial stops for us (including last week). He can leave with his head held high knowing he’s helped Celtic to progress to better things.

VVD on the other hand has had a good season and still needs to earn his Celtic credentials.

Good luck to big lurch and I hope to see him between the sticks for his country one day. I also hope he may get another chance to play in the Champions league.

He’ll never experience times like he did at paradise again though, I hope he cherishes those moments and tells it like it was.

    Hail Hail Fraser Forster.

  14. Don’t think a keeper should be a priority at the moment, if at all. Gordon should be given until Christmas to prove his fitness. His quality isn’t in doubt imo. If his fitness fail before then & Zaluska has to cover then look for another in January. We have other priorities at the moment.

Willie Wallace was capped while at Hearts. Dixie was scoring for fun at Motherwell, and McLair was a great footballer before we signed him.

You did try to compare them to Stevie May. Read back.

I’ve been going to Celtic Park since 1965 and saw all those guys playing against us before we signed them.

If you want people to understand you, try to make yourself clear and think a little before you babble on. You’ve been going on about Stevie May like you were his agent.

  16. here’s the game plan

bring in unknown Scandinavian manager, invest little or nothing in squad, take Europe on the chin, let fans blame manager, continue to declare attendances are 40,000 plus, pray to God that Aberdeen don’t improve and that Sevco are promoted.

    have I missed anything?

I guess we’re about to find out if the “crippled” goalie we signed is up to the task. I’m going to say yes I think he will be, CG will be a great performer and will become a Celtic favourite.

Get us some good players in front of him and see what we’re capable of.

    PfAyr

    So you were proved right?

FF is gone and replaced by Gordon. Seems straightforward enough.

Do I think Gordon is as good as FF ? Definitely not but how likely are we to be able to replace a goal keeper who’s England’s No3 and , arguably , should be their no2?

I’m sorry to see the big guy go but trying to be realistic about trying to replace him.

  25. I recall Paul 67 telling us that the strategy is along the lines of getting in young talent, developing it, get the best years of their career and sell at the optimum time.

In theory this is good. In practice we are not getting the best of them for long enough. We seem to.move them on after 2 good seasons,3 max. Maybe we need to look at getting another few years from them. This is maybe where we have to spend more – wages to keep them until 26/27 years of age and then sell them if they wish to go and if it’s in Celtics best interests.

    Good luck to big Fraser

  26. PFayr,

if and I appreciate its a big if CG manages to stay fit,

do you think he could be a good replacement for FF,

or are his best days behind him

  27. macjay1

Sorry, despite my efforts I seem to have expressed myself poorly.

I was not suggesting a link between playing ability and managerial capability (Jose Mourinho anyone?)

As far as I know RD was not a particularly good player.

Quite apart from that he has no pedigree as a manager outside of Norway.

What I was trying to say is that, for me, he seems so busy with his dream that he refuses to confront reality.

We are all Celtic supporters and, as such, keep dreaming without forgetting the real world.

First we win – then we improve.

If you don’t buy into that, then you shouldn’t be at Celtic.
