Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round. Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray. Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.
Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England. They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.
If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.
Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Big cup winners,
Celtic will finish at least 15 points ahead of Aberdeen. We will also skelp them once or twice.

10 million for Forster is good business. Good shot stopper. But hey, who does have their heart in their mouth at every opposition corner?
Having said all that, this wasn’t the type of good business I was hoping for.
PL must realise that this reprieve is pivotal – there’s a chance to strengthen, to embolden the existing the squad. Equally, it could mark the start of lower tier only stadium and more insipid displays.
PL should be very wary if he secretly hopes that the promotion of Sevco, which is not guaranteed even if they do survive the season, will have the fans returning in their droves. The fixture with Oldco was pretty much a busted flush even before they expired.
Saint Stivs, the Rod program is repeated at 12:50am.

One of my 24 carat all time favourites.
BCW- I think FF has earned his move in the grand scheme of all things Celtic, we are not in good shape right now but FF can be used as a good selling tool to attract others.

Spot on – I forgot to include Fraser Forster, a schoolboy error to make on tonight of all nights :)
i absolutely loved alan thompson in a celtic jersey.
committed, hard as nails, direct, lots of first time crosses, dont need to go past a player to cross a ball, henrik scored around 120 goals in their seasosn together, i would bet 50 of them came from thommo assists.
and sutton and larsson
and offcourse he was an absolute hunskelper .
hunskelper 11 anyone ?
Goodnight all
Not a bad day all in all.
and sutton and hartson, 150 goals between them, probably another 50 thommo assists

Watch them. You’ll see the contrast.
How about. Scotland’s new Centre Forward, Chris Martin fae Derby ?

I hated rod when I was at Holy Cross in the seventies but love the man now
Turkeybhoy
First of all, you could say that without telling those whose opinion differs from you that they know nothing about football.
Secondly, you’re not the only one who has watched him.
What’s to lose? How about money that could go towards a CL striker when we should be able to win the SPFL with the ones we have? I’m not trying to argue with you. If we sold Stokes/Pukki/Griffiths first then fair enough, but I think we should be looking for someone far better than any of them, then addressing other positions before taking a punt on a guy like May.
PF
Good player, loses concentration sometimes.
Too left pegged for centre mid, and the prominence he has in the team.

Well, at least his mighty ministrations helped me to the roots of fluency in French/German. Most of that was also due to location though.

CPT -5 here, just in from work, is SSB worth a listen then? Depsite the vague embarrassment I feel over all this.

Did you ever have old Lafferty for RE
Yugoslav football.
There is a huge amount of talent in this area. The climate is ideal for developing sporting talent. Near our little place in Istria in North Croatia there are more tennis courts than you will find in all of Scotland. The school children finish lessons at an early time and practise their sport after school. One of the biggest sports is handball which is pretty much unknown in the UK but really big in central Europe. Really exciting sport to watch.
Even in mid winter the conditions are good for practising sport which means that the children train all year round.
Most people are within good body mass index ranges which is a testimony to population fitness levels.
The people are quite tall and athletic. Many of the girls are very fit and beautiful but that is totally irrelevant to CQN – just my observation.
The old Yugoslav football league was very competitive but each country now has weaker leagues since the break up of the country into independent states. Many of my friends would like it to be reconstituted so that Zagreb and Split would play Partizan/ Red Star Belgrade, Vojvodina Nova Sad and Maribor etc.
Our result against Red Star remains one of our best ever.
It is an area that produces hungry and talented players but thee clubs suffer from the Scottish league size syndrome.
Underestimate the talent at your peril.
Celtic would do well to look at this market for future talent.
Maribor will be a very difficult task. Unusually they are the biggest club but do not come from the capital city Llublijana which is one of the most delightful small cities in Europe. It has a landscape like Edinburgh – castle on one side of the city with the main town on the other. A small river runs between lined by great cafes. Well worth a visit.
Last year we were quite stable under a manager who had his style of play. This year we are transforming to a new style. Normally I would think that we would have enough to beat them but Wednesday showed that we have a major disconnect between the ambitions of the manager and the abilities of the players. We urgently need to find a commitment here as a repeat of Wednesday cannot be tolerated.
Ronny needs to realise what our current strengths are and accept where we are just now. If he does, we can quality. If he thinks that we can play offensive football without keeping a tight defence we could get another drubbing.
I was chastised by my wife for constantly smiling tonight when we went round to the local bar for a drink. Wonder why I couldn’t get the smile off my face.
Dobra vecer
Agree re Ally Hunter, thought he had great potential but never the same again.after clattering into the post, wasn’t it against England?
Haven’t read back but just heard that big Fraze is finally away to Southampton for £10m. Superb big keeper and I’m really sorry to see him go. Thanks for everything big man, the best Celtic keeper of my lifetime, and I’m old enough to remember Peter Latchford

Welcome aboard,Alex.
Completely agree with most of what you say.
Except the suggestion that your standard as a footballer determines your standard as a coach/manager.
Who in these pages was saying at the end of last season when Lenny was in charge that Celtic were a bad team?
Who was saying that we needed wholesale change of personnel?
The change is the coach.
I fear he will be gone within 6 months and the key will be how he performs domestically.
More than 6 points behind at the end of October…………………….Jotters.

I was a big Rod / Rolling Stones fan …… Couldn’t stand the Beatles…. :)
Not a regular poster but supporter fan call me what you will
It’s been a great day couple of orcs at work talking about the right thing for us to do ( decline the pass )and representing Scotland with DIGNITY jeez how deluded can you get
Sure we’ve got a get out of jail/free pass card
This miracle I’ve told them only demonstrates our new position at the front of the bus but thats talking to THEMS
Back in the real world after those two performances we will have to be at our best to beat Maribor anybody in the dressing room who doesn’t whole heartily support the new management team should be shown the door equally to our most prized assets if you want to go then go with our blessings and thank you for everything
This is Celtic in our eyes a club like no other
We have been given a chance like no other
Sure I fear the group stage but surely our board know that no more humiliations will be acceptable
Myself and my boys ( SB holders)spend a lot just getting to half a dozen league games like many other overseas and England based bhoys
Jeez CFC YOU ARE A HUGE PART OF OUR LIFES and what we want to pass on to the next generation of tims
Don’t let this magnificent support down
Hail hail
Camberley Celt
Thank goodness we have the striking talent that is Declan Sanchez.

Many thanks for your contribution. You know on here all we hear is”How can we afford that,or this player”.We have many fine young players in Scotland, sadly it seems, not at Lennoxtown.
When one comes up in another team, the cry goes up”Not good enough”
As I said earlier, what would have happened if we had never taken a chance on Wallace,Mc Bride,Deans,Mc Clair,Walker.
I am not saying he is the answer, but already the knockers are on decrying the boy.
Same people who tell us all we cannot afford decent players.
Also see Jeff Louis, Celtic target about to sign for Standard Liege ?

You beat me to it. Turkeyboy, you seriously comparing Stevie May to Wispy, Choccy and Dixie??? You have no idea.

You ‘got that in one’…HH
The Holy Goalie, before his regretable life style change, was the best Celtic keeper I have seen. FF is good but not in his class (at that time).
Just my opinion ;)
