Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Whoa! I feel like I’ve just ran a 400 metre race reading that.

  7. My own random thoughts on the short term plan adopted by PL, DD and the board.

This was to be a season of transition.

Financial budgeting was for revenues from Europa League.

With a new manager there would be a hiatus in player purchases while the new manager settled in and identified those who would follow and fit in with his football philosophy.

Revenues from anticipated players sales, FF, VVD and Declan Sanchez, would be banked to allow the manager to invest in the January window.

Hopefully the signings would help attract crowds in the event of no further participation in the Europa League.

In the highly unlikely event we were struggling in the SPFL then these signings would also ensure we would win the league and give us a reasonable chance of qualifying for the CL group stages.

This would also put further financial distance between ourselves and the South Side Lazarus.

It now seems we have been handed the possibility of a reprieve and a golden lottery ticket.

Maybe the second part of the master plan will be moved up a transfer window and Ronny will get the investment he needs to compete in Europe through to Christmas.

  8. Macjay. I fear once again they will be once again bench sitters from other teams or haveneverbeens who will sit on our bench

Re.Scott, My feeling in the Legia games was that there was a lack of fight in the team.

I think Scott will provide that when he returns.

Is it coincidental that Charlie, who was given the captaincy for these game did not, according to many, perform well?

Any new Celtic coach has to hit the ground running, not stumbling.

I very much hope that Ronny has got what it takes.

    We`ll see.

  19. The thing that strikes me about this whole Legia debacle is the player himself.

He knew he was suspended for 3 games.

He sits out 2 games and then agrees to be a sub in the 3rd.

At what point in time did he think this was OK?

Maybe he had been chatting with some of those nice Sevconians who think rules etc… don’t apply to you if you don’t happen to agree with them.

Legia should definitely ask for their appeal to be heard in Edinburgh.

Apologies I mistook your rogic for rogne!.

    Doh! Lol

Is rogic not on loan in oz

    :-)

    HH

  21. Rogic was injured in Australia’s warm up for the World Cup.

He is not still on loan at Melbourne. He probably had an operation and is recuperating.

  22. Good morning CQNers,

Ronny is reportedly looking for some quick acquisitions and just for a bit of fun I’ve listed those I like to see shipped out to make room for them – just a bit of idle speculation.

Forster – Let him go (Goneeeeeee!)

Has peaked and is looking frustrated, good shot stopper but loses marks for not commanding his area. He’s served us well but he’s beginning to show arrogant traits that’ll diminish his worth to the team.

Matthews – Keep and review next summer

Was progressive but injury has set him back – In contention for the right back position with Lustig but he hasn’t sparkled recently and question emerging about his commitment, although the question could be answered by a lack of sharpness following his injury.

Izaguirre – Keep and review in January

Defensively he has failings but offers an attacking option. His defensive frailties compromise the team and for that reason his place in the team has to be questioned, although he just might flourish under Melia’s new regime.

    Ambrose – Let him go

He is definitely not a centre half and we already have enough cover at the position he plays for his country. There is no doubt about his commitment but lacks composure and a football brain.

Van Dijk – Keep and review at the end of the season.

Progressive and has ability but concerns have surfaced recently about his attitude. He appears unsettled and the question remains about what is unsettling him, just speculating but could it possibly be a personality clash with the new manager?

Mulgrew – Keep for a defensive role.

Inconsistent on a scale from the sublime to the ridiculous – not a captain and not a midfielder but can be utilised at centre half and left back.

    Lustig – Keep

Progressive and improving with each season both defensively and with his forays forward.

Bitton – Keep and review at the end of the season.

Shows promise and will need more game-time before making a judgement.

    Brown – Keep

Matured into a decent player, limited but decent. Solid captain and will be needed in the transition period for this team.

Boerrigter – Keep and review in January

Has taken time to settle and has shown little promise. New manager may be able to encourage him to improve.

    Commons – Keep

Lacks pace but his creative contribution has been recognised far and wide and for that reason we are more likely to see him marked out of more and more games, however he’s still one of the few creative players in the team and more importantly he scores goals.

    Berget – ??

Rogic – Keep and review next summer.

Promising early career and won plaudits – showed some promise in his few appearances but if he’s not capable of getting into the Australian world cup squad you’ve got to question whether he’s ready to play for Celtic. Youth is on his side and he just might flourish under Melia with Jim McGuinness’s influence.

    Johansen – Keep

Progressive and displaying signs he could compliment Scot Brown in midfield.

    Kayal – Punt immediately

Disappointed on too many levels and on too many occasions.

    McGregor – Keep

Has played himself into the team very quickly and not over-awed in the least in Europe.

    McGeouch – Review next summer

Industrious but hasn’t produced much of note. Early days though.

    Forrest – Keep

Progression interrupted by injuries and temperament also questioned at times. Nonetheless he’s young and with Jim McGuinness working on his mindset I hope to see his early promise flower into something greater.

    Stokes – Let him go

Still difficult to work out his best position and he hasn’t a goal scorers instinct, there are also questions about his attitude.

    Balde – Let him go

An enigma and won’t fit into the Melia’s proposed pattern of play.

    Pukki – Review in January

Has shown a bit more confidence in the pre-season and making increasing contribution, he could fit into Melia’s plans and another candidate for Jim McGuinness.

    Griffiths – Let him go

Hasn’t shown too much to recommend him on the park and his off-field activities are a distraction, all-in-all a poor return.

If my wish list were to materialise we’d have somewhere in the region of £11m to spend on new acquisitions without touching the current cash reserves.

  23. Just had a strange dream. Dreamt we had been given our place back in the CL, which had the added bonus of sending FF into meltdown, and that I caught the first 2 winners at Ayr races, called Paddys Rock and swift approval. Ah if only dreams came true eh….

…..will go and check the papers now and find out who we drew in the Europa League and have a look at the horses….

Very confident that he`ll be a good`un in spite of your justifiable concerns about his extra-curriculars.

  25. Hurting Hun?

Vladimir Weiss was not pleased with the decision to allow Celtic back in the Champions League.

Celtic were comprehensively beaten by Polish champions Legia Warsaw in the Champions League qualifying third round this week, an aggregate score of 6-1 proof enough that they dominated proceedings in both legs.

However, the three minute cameo of an ineligible substitute when the game was as good as dead has seen them get a last minute reprieve, and Celtic are back in the competition.

Today they entered the play-off round stage of the competition as a seeded side, budging Bulgarian outfit Ludgorets Razgrad into the unseeded section in the process. They then went on to receive a favourable draw, NK Maribor of Slovenia standing in their way of a place in the Champions League Group Stages.

And for some it was a decision that rankled – including one former Rangers player. Slovakian Vladimir Weiss spent the 2010-11 season on loan at Ibrox from Manchester City and now plays in Qatar for Lekhwiya, where Michael Laudrup is the manager.

And he released a foul-mouthed rant at the decision on Twitter just after the draw was announced, stating:

“Un f***** believable.. Got r**** 6:1!!! Should never be allowed to play champions league after that.. Embarrassing #f***celtic.”

The meltdown has caused a serious storm on Twitter, mostly for some of the language he used in the Tweet.

True Celtic’s reinstatement is definitely unfair, most Celtic fans themselves would probably admit they have gotten off lightly, but take it on the chin Vlad.

Good morning from a rather wet Nordrhein Westfalen.

For those short-termists who are looking for instant success and want Ronny Deila sacked with immediate effect, what makes you think he won’t walk out on the club because of lack of investment in the team. The problem with football fans, especially Celtic fans is they expect a new manager to win every game.

No, I’m not happy about our performances or the results against Legia but the guy is settling into a new job with a new team in a new country. Plenty of the moaners on here would have had Henke out the door after his first game with Celtic.

I wonder how this new manager would have fared on here with the usual suspects when he first started with his new team in 1965?
