Mark Lawwell off as CFG process ends at Celtic

447

Mark Lawwell, Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment, and Joe Dudgeon, Lead First Team Scout, both resigned yesterday to “pursue other opportunities”.  Mark joined from City Football Group (CFG) in May 2022, Joe followed from the same source six months later.

While at CFG, Lawwell was Head of Scouting and Recruitment, responsible for Manchester City, Girona, Ange Postecoglou’s Yokohama and others.  The pair worked together for three years at CFG, where Ange bought into Mark’s recruitment and development pathway. Mark then recommended Ange to Celtic.

After his successful first season at Celtic, Ange brought Mark up from Manchester to head Celtic’s recruitment.  Plans were cut short when Ange left for Tottenham before the pair set to work in the summer of 2023.

It was clear to many that Brendan Rodgers recruitment methodology was different from Ange’s, while Mark Lawwell’s also differed from Lee Congerton’s, who headed recruitment during Brendan’s first term at Celtic.  Lee had worked with Brendan early in their backroom careers at Chelsea and followed him to Leicester in 2019.

Both Lawwell and Congerton suffered some reputational damage among the support during their times at Celtic, although Head of Recruitment is only one piece of the jigsaw.  Congerton’s reputation in the game got him the top recruitment job at Atalanta in 2022.

After the work he did at CFG and his transformational time at Celtic through Postecoglou, Mark Lawwell also has significant standing in the game.  He will end up back in the English Premier League, where there is a bit of flux at the top end.

City and Chelsea are prodigious hoarders of talent, although he may prefer not to return to City and not be further contaminated by Chelsea.  Postecoglou moved for him before and could take him to Spurs.  I would keep an eye on Manchester United as a possible destination.  Their new controlling shareholder is known to respect the work of CFG and will make changes to the football and recruitment operation.

Liverpool are probably too focused on replacing Klopp than making any further senior changes.  There are lots of clubs keen to move up the food chain further down the EPL, who may also move for him.  Bookmark me if you think any other scenario is likely.  What happens next will be a measure of what walked out the door yesterday.

The January transfer window was described as “disappointing” by Mark’s father, chairman, Peter Lawwell, showing his aptitude for understatement.  The manager and recruitment department need to work to the same methodology or we end up with £67m in the bank and spending very little.  The frustration would have been palpable.

I think everyone had the best intentions when Brendan joined in the summer and committed to work with the existing recruitment system.  The manager must always have the final decision in transfers, but if we do not sign who the recruitment department wants us to sign, those at the top will soon move on.

I doubt we will be able to get Lee Congerton back.  Whether you want someone like Lee in to work with Brendan they way they did until 2019 doesn’t matter, it is important that we get someone who operates like that.  The manager needs a Head of Recruitment who works the way he does, not the way CFG do.  It may not be to your taste, but it’s surely better than rejecting everyone.  So nothing to worry about.

  1. Plenty on here upset by the result at Hunbrox?

Away you go. You think frustration is supporting the Hun? A lot of people on here are angry that we are scrambling for a league title against a crap team because the board wouldn’t spend any money.

  2. I had a VERY Profitable day with my Fitba Bets Today.

I had THREE Correct Scores come up at 14/1, 9/1 and 6/1 on a ” LUCKY 31″ Bet.

I selected FIVE Correct scores from the Five SPL games that where played Today.

I FAILED to forecast the Hun game…sadly…. but NO Matter.

    LOL

I also have those Three Correct score on my SUPERBRU…..and there is still the Celtic v Hearts game to come tomorrow

Hearts pitch up at Mordor and get pumped 5-0.

Motherwell turn up and win 2-1.

    Makes you wonder 🤔

BBC just reported citizens of Gaza “suffered bullet wounds”.

“The IDS shot them up” might have worked just as well … but there you go.

I looked at that then decided to have another look and …..nothing. Has it been taken down?

  7. No wantin tae get involved in some tit for tat triviality and havin seen managers coaches players and boardroom members come and go, the only constant with our club are the support who are there and always will be, so this is more for the hunterlopers on here than any hurtin good Tims.

When Peter Lawwell initially left it was of his own accord as his family, including a baby ffs, had almost lost their lives when his home caught fire as a result of him trying tae keep the mob out of our business.

DD though had other plans for him and wanted a crack at UEFA as he knew that’s where our problems lay and the breest bearin mob at hunden were going tae dae sfa about it as they have hated us since we along with Renton FC removed most of their power from them, as I said most but not all such as players registration and mitbs which was our biggest mistake stayed with them.

So he created a non-exec position for him at the club to allow him to continue in his various roles with UEFA committees where he is Vice-Chairman of the ECA a Board member of the UEFA/ECA joint venture (UCC SA) and member of the ECA Executive Committee, so for his reward in helping create the FFP he was given the non-exec title of Chairman of our great club, as apart fae stopping clubs like sevco throwin money about like a man with no erms the bonkle bigot is no longer on the referee’s committee 2023 -2027 but allegedly workin in turkey.

So, wish all you want huns, as long as DD is still around big gas meter isnae goin anywhere, unless he wants tae to.

Dear or dear this really the argument you want to persist with when they’ve just been beaten at home?

I reminded the blog what events took place when I said

“Are you saying Rangers hadn’t won the 3 previous titles before going into admin then liquidation??”

I didn’t say Celtic’s second 9IAR was invalid I said there was no competition. The huns had no competition either for their financially doped 9IAR. It’s not our fault they ran an EBT scheme that resulted in the taxman killing them off. You can only beat what’s in front of you. Ask yourself would it have been considered a travesty if we had lost any one of those leagues? It’s a yes or no question. And we all know the answer. You quote a lot of things but somehow nothing on the routine shambles that was our yearly Champions League qualifiers.

You’re then talking about getting my English in order whilst talking incoherent jibberish so I am unable to reply to the rest of your post. You’re right about one thing though, I do loathe Peter Lawwell.

Enjoy your evening pal and I hope you enjoy tomorrow even more

I was watching Spurs v Palace but switched over to Ibrox for last 20 minutes. So glad I did.

Huns screaming for a second penalty. Ref waved claims away and Motherwell ran up the park and scored.

To top it off I had Fulham, Spurs, Newcastle & Swansea on a £10 accumulator.

I’ve already bet Celtic to win 2-1 tomorrow.

  10. My first point winner scored by ex Cork City player,

second a huge result but only if we win tomorrow,

Third, 8 minutes injury time could be justified, think there was a long VAR delay around the Penalty decision,

    Fourth Penalty Decision pure cheating.

Fifth A Well player thundered into McCausland in the first half got the ball first but follow through looked ugly and put the hero in blue out of the game, now I must admit if a Celtic Player was at the end of that tackle, I would have been screaming foe a red.

Curious how folk can blame those leading the club for losses but never credit them for wins ?

That seems really odd to me.

Really agree 100% that the 4 titles which we won then rangers were reforming were totally valid.

The don’t even balance out the 7 which they won from 1998 to 2011 whilst hideously overspending and cheating.

I personally do give credit to our leadership team Quinn Lawwell etc who did not chase them post Seville and right sized our business whilst they self destructed.

I understand the macro economic factors you speak of which did contribute but they left themselves exposed whilst we did not. Hence we prevailed for those 4 seasons which that guy speaks of. We created that opportunity. We then exploited it but also suffered not having top quality competition which impacted on us in 3 ways : Recenue, attracting talent to play, Lack of preparedness for Europe due to domestic levels.

Wont even consider celebrating the sevco defeat until full time at Tynecastle tomorrow.

  13. Big Gas Meter wants out to.

I was speaking to him and Mark the other week and both said the pressure was too great for them.

Like Mark I hope Big Pedro gets his wish. Timing and all that.

    D. :)

  14. Jack Butland, considering he’s a future England number 1, was seriously dodgy, at both Motherwell goals.

  15. Guys,

I can see the pros and cons of Peter Lawwell.

But Tontine Tim’s post made me think.

PL could have lost his life and the life of his family in that arson attack.

Neil Lennon got attacked in the street, got explosive devices sent to him and was attacked in full publicity at Swinecastle.

Possibly we should reflect on that. Renumeration may be great, but so is the risk associated with our club.

Same with TT’s ‘hunterlopers’. If you don’t name them it means nothing.

  17. Reggie,your farting,you wrote

As for Peter Lawwell, Rangers were going for 4 in a row when they were liquidated. Lawwell’s domestic success is predicated entirely on having no competition.

To many on here imagining with no clue.

Deal with the reality of your own words.👆

Lawells domestic success is predicated entirely on the huns..

    GtF with that

What was Celtic success in face of the cheating hun? MON? Strachan? Not bad success as the liquidatedclubs went onto DOS & EBTs in 1999

Your assertion is better suited on ff.

Another title to be goin on with now

Still a lot to go on

Give Celtic your support as you appear only to

    question what Celtic won.

  18. We need to collect 3pts tomorrow, I have every confidence … personally in the next 8 days would like Celtic, Benfica & Hibs to achieve 3 victories, I would like too see the Belgian Pep, Clementy, handle that scenario

But woikd settle for just Celtic winning tomorrow

  19. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Just watched highlights from Aye-brokes posted by clunks.

    A few thoughts.

    1. Sevco get penalties for incidents where other Scottish teams simply do not. The statistics bear this out conclusively.

    2. Goalie was poor at the winner.

    3. Tavernier’s contribution to all three goals should be studied closely.

First goal : Slow to react to danger (as always) he actually missed the block by a whisker. Compare and contrast with his speed of reaction in the opposition box when he had a chance to score a header.

Second goal : practice makes perfect.

Third goal. Asleep at the back post as always.

If Sevco had a proper right full back rather than a winger pretending he could defend?

    They would have won today.

  20. I posted on Thursday that they were very fortunate at Kilmarnock not to concede 3 goals from headers especially from crosses deep to the back post, Motherwell scored their second from a high ball to the back post, its a weak spot teams need to use it.
