Master-class in subversion, Very successful managers

496

Surprised at the success our former (very successful) managers, Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan, are having on the international stage?  Perhaps a bit surprised they’ve figures out how to collect points away from home in Europe.

Martin O’Neill will always be royalty at Celtic but after a couple of well-financed seasons at Aston Villa his star fell, eventually leading to an ignominious departure from Sunderland, who managed to replace him, and improve, under Paulo DiCanio.

A decade earlier Martin was the hottest property in management in the UK.  Campaigns were run by Liverpool fans to tempt him, he was tipped for the Manchester United job when Alex Ferguson retired, but the absurd reality that Di Canio was able to stop the decline of O’Neill’s Sunderland team damaged his brand considerablty.

Gordon Strachan had a claustrophobic four years at Celtic.  He became only the third manager in our history to win three consecutive league titles, and broke new ground in the Champions League, but Celtic’s commercial competitiveness declined during this era, making Gordon’s life harder than it would otherwise have been.

The Ireland and Scotland jobs both looked like poisoned chalices.  Ireland reached Euro 2012 but came home pointless, looking like a team in decline.  Scotland had fallen so low they were hardly in decline when Gordon Strachan took over from Craig Levein last year, but it seemed shifting demographics had consigned our interest to club football only.

Martin may have found his niche.  His teams have always known how to defend and how to score goals, issues like ball retention always appeared trivial to him.  Gordon is an example of a manager who is always learning.  He was an excellent Celtic manager but it should surprise no one that he is a better manager now than he was when he left five years ago.

I’ve absolutely no idea which side is going to win the bun fight for control over Newco Rangers, but, there is some interesting form to consider……

Just when people with money and a plan (on this occasion Ashley with the Easdales) look to have things sorted, the cabal, previously known as the Blue Knights, pitch up without the wherewithal to take control and drive a poisoned wedge between fans and club.

It’s a master-class in subversion.  Based on his previous exploits my money’s not on the tax crook (the one convicted in South Africa, that is) succeeding.

  1. Thanks for the advice.

Was just reading the James Forrest post and was astounded by the link to Barcabhoy.

What a brilliant piece of simple logic.

Anyone knowing The Barcabhoy’s points should strive to illuminate the masses as often as possible.

    An interesting excercise.

Go through all the veiled threats and court cases and join the dots. Bare in mind that the judiciary especially in Scotland is utterly bent and that a writ between these guys is the EXACT same as a Christmas card they all go back to Murray and his cohorts. It is a murky area but nothing will happen regardless of how clear the waters may become. This blog itself threw in the towel immediately after the 5 way agreement and very quickly. Why ?

I look forward to xmas. Chop chop :-)

  4. My friends in Celtic,

Does anybody on here really think PL would take a credit note from Bolton.

Anyway, Bolton are on a cost cutting exercise that would make PL’s financial strategy look like lavish extravagance.

Their current level of debt and yearly losses are simply unsustainable.

Bolton’s finances are basket case material. PL may be many things but he is no mug.

  7. Maybes PL is no mug, but the footy team are nothing like they should be, that is 100% down to the policy that PL sticks to like glue.

The spivs who’re sucking the life out of Sevco would never have got to do it had it not been for the complete failure to take “fit and proper person” seriously at the SFA. Now, after a stunning new series of revelations, the biggest scandal of all might be about to sink everyone involved.

No argument from me here.Instead of venting their spleen in the right direction, they woud rather pick on the sub-standard players being foisted onto the managers, who then have to try and make silk from a lot of Sows ears.

  12. bigshuggy,

I thought it strange for the bank to contact me and I got the impression when I phoned them, I wasn’t being told the whole story.

    I just don’t trust banks.

My brother also had his account hacked but that was a while ago and he was reimbursed right away.

I have a great deal of respect for guys like yourself who live far from Parkhead but get up at all times of the night to follow Celtic on dodgy streams or whatever.

However, your continual cheap, snidey gibes about the Celtic Trust have no basis in reality or any genuine understanding of the work they do.

  16. Yes the board are too blame for short term planning but long term lack of investment but to ignore the current manager’s shortcomings is blinkered in the extreme.

Forget any nonsense spouted by the media or anyone else, the Celtic support is not stupid and we know what we’re witnessing.

Lurking but can’t forget an amusing hit on my CC quite a few years ago.

Replacement card (in post) had been intercepted and they ran amok to the tune of £5.5K in 3-4 days.

    What tipped the bank off?

2 x £1400 transactions for takeaway curries in the West End!

Reimbursed – new card and £50 for my inconvenience.

Now use a P.O. Master Card that I can top-up on-line for any internet transactions – only ever has the money in it that I transfer for purchases. :-)

  19. THE EXILED TIM,

Every Celtic supporter / fan wants better for his team. And yes there is no doubt we should be doing better.

We play Ross County at the weekend and there can be no excuses. However PL does not miss “sitters” and can not be responsible for handsomely paid players not being able to stay onside.

We have better players than Ross County, that is fact as our players away on international duty will testify.

They are international players for a reason and they must demonstrate that at domestic level and take more responsibility.

If PL was sacked tomorrow who would you replace him with and do you think it would make the slightest bit of difference to our financial strategy .?

    I agree 100% with what I said….LOL

Look, we are not where we should be, end of.

That is down to the policy.

The policy which I think is a feckin good one, considering were we are presently, yet there is no flexibility in it, that is what’s wrong IMO.

We have blown the operchancity to kill thems, that was never going to happen tho, but FFS, our closet rivals are on their knees, and we do feck all to kill them off, dearie me, where in the world apart from sectarianland would that happen ?

Next time get yourself a P.O. Master Card. You can transfer; £’s/$’s/Euros into card and use it same as CC or at most ATM’s. You can do ‘secure’ top-up (from most places in the world) from your bank to the P.O. Master Card if you have Internet Banking.

Within an hour – you can go to an ATM and withdraw cash in the local currency.

  24. greenpinata,

I can’t argue that we have better players but do we have a better team on the park?

That’s the managers job to ensure we play as a unit, a team, sadly this seems lacking due to DL’s formations.

I really want him to come good, sadly the rumours are already circulating he won’t have long and Owen Coyle is being lined up.
