Master-class in subversion, Very successful managers

496

Surprised at the success our former (very successful) managers, Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan, are having on the international stage?  Perhaps a bit surprised they’ve figures out how to collect points away from home in Europe.

Martin O’Neill will always be royalty at Celtic but after a couple of well-financed seasons at Aston Villa his star fell, eventually leading to an ignominious departure from Sunderland, who managed to replace him, and improve, under Paulo DiCanio.

A decade earlier Martin was the hottest property in management in the UK.  Campaigns were run by Liverpool fans to tempt him, he was tipped for the Manchester United job when Alex Ferguson retired, but the absurd reality that Di Canio was able to stop the decline of O’Neill’s Sunderland team damaged his brand considerablty.

Gordon Strachan had a claustrophobic four years at Celtic.  He became only the third manager in our history to win three consecutive league titles, and broke new ground in the Champions League, but Celtic’s commercial competitiveness declined during this era, making Gordon’s life harder than it would otherwise have been.

The Ireland and Scotland jobs both looked like poisoned chalices.  Ireland reached Euro 2012 but came home pointless, looking like a team in decline.  Scotland had fallen so low they were hardly in decline when Gordon Strachan took over from Craig Levein last year, but it seemed shifting demographics had consigned our interest to club football only.

Martin may have found his niche.  His teams have always known how to defend and how to score goals, issues like ball retention always appeared trivial to him.  Gordon is an example of a manager who is always learning.  He was an excellent Celtic manager but it should surprise no one that he is a better manager now than he was when he left five years ago.

I’ve absolutely no idea which side is going to win the bun fight for control over Newco Rangers, but, there is some interesting form to consider……

Just when people with money and a plan (on this occasion Ashley with the Easdales) look to have things sorted, the cabal, previously known as the Blue Knights, pitch up without the wherewithal to take control and drive a poisoned wedge between fans and club.

It’s a master-class in subversion.  Based on his previous exploits my money’s not on the tax crook (the one convicted in South Africa, that is) succeeding.

  15. Was over in Munich last year went to the Bayern v Augsburg match…great matchday experince featuring excellent beer & hot dogs with a superb atmosphere created by the Bayern (standing) ultras unfortunately it cost me € 170 for my son and i so i didnt get to feel the glow of cheap admission. It was well worth it though.

  16. Football in France is also very inexpensive compared to Scotland went to a few Monaco matches in the late 90s/eerly 00s cost for admission was £2 for a seat behind the goals.

  17. Was talking about admission prices in the pub. Any idea how some big leagues can charge so little compared to the UK?

When I arrived in Edinburgh heading into Musselburgh I stood at the platform where the Musselburgh train usually leaves from, there was a train there but it seemed dead not a single person going on board stood for about 5 mins then went to the main board and read that there was no trains running into Musselburgh that day,I had to walk up to the street where the bus was leaving from, two flights of stairs finished it for me,I started to get a bit angry by then, and even more angry when the driver wouldn’t stop the train when we passed the racecourse I asked politely if I could get of and he come up with I have to take you to where I drop you off, Wallyford isn’t far from Musselburgh but the driver took us the long route round,I was demented by this time,I wanted to bet the horse in the first race,I missed that by ten minutes,a blessing in disguise really,it got humped, not in the first three so I probablly saved 40-50 quid but that was the start of me feeling that I was getting yukky, had £20 on the 2nd race beaten into 2nd place,by then I was near in a trance so decided to eff off back to Edinburgh, I called you three times and I coldn’t get through. That’s the reason I went back to Glasgow to meet all those bampots at the hootinannie.I’m not checking this post if it’s all mixed up it’s because my heads all mixed up at the moment.

In short the game is corrupt.

    ________________________________________________

Roy, thanks for posting that pic fella.

It’s from the game were a young KJ was getting his pic taken in the tunnel before the start of ‘that’ game with my favorite player of that time – Big Shuggie.

Shuggie was my fovorite at that time as, he was the last Celtic player to score v’s the huns :)

I had the copy of the edition of ‘that’ weeks Celtic View in my late mothers house and when she passed away, some things were misplaced.

I checked a few times over my remaining editions of the CV and I came across a young Bernard Ponsonby who I used to see quite a lot when I had a SB in the Jock Stein Stand

and his pic was taken round about the same time.

The tunnels are being dug as I speak to try and retrieve ‘that’ editon of the CV.

If I’m lucky enough to get a hold of it – I’ll get the bhoy or, KJ(junior) to post on here for ye.

Btw….the game in the pic was a 3-3 draw.

Oh, and another wee milestone was reached ‘that’ day as, KJ was the first ‘ever’ Celtic-Bhoy to be pictured with his hero wearing the hoops as my parents were running late.

I was wearing a duffle-coat and some folk said that I looked like the young Damien from the Omen :)

    Maybe they were right? :)

    Hail Hail

    Bye.

  28. kitalba.

There must be some people on here that travel in the supporters buses, surely if they read you want a couple of spare seats and they have a bus that’s running with a few seats spare they’ll offer you them.

  29. Kitalba

I could probably get you a couple of seats on my own bus that leaves from the Gallowgate, let me know.
