Master-class in subversion, Very successful managers

496

Surprised at the success our former (very successful) managers, Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan, are having on the international stage?  Perhaps a bit surprised they’ve figures out how to collect points away from home in Europe.

Martin O’Neill will always be royalty at Celtic but after a couple of well-financed seasons at Aston Villa his star fell, eventually leading to an ignominious departure from Sunderland, who managed to replace him, and improve, under Paulo DiCanio.

A decade earlier Martin was the hottest property in management in the UK.  Campaigns were run by Liverpool fans to tempt him, he was tipped for the Manchester United job when Alex Ferguson retired, but the absurd reality that Di Canio was able to stop the decline of O’Neill’s Sunderland team damaged his brand considerablty.

Gordon Strachan had a claustrophobic four years at Celtic.  He became only the third manager in our history to win three consecutive league titles, and broke new ground in the Champions League, but Celtic’s commercial competitiveness declined during this era, making Gordon’s life harder than it would otherwise have been.

The Ireland and Scotland jobs both looked like poisoned chalices.  Ireland reached Euro 2012 but came home pointless, looking like a team in decline.  Scotland had fallen so low they were hardly in decline when Gordon Strachan took over from Craig Levein last year, but it seemed shifting demographics had consigned our interest to club football only.

Martin may have found his niche.  His teams have always known how to defend and how to score goals, issues like ball retention always appeared trivial to him.  Gordon is an example of a manager who is always learning.  He was an excellent Celtic manager but it should surprise no one that he is a better manager now than he was when he left five years ago.

I’ve absolutely no idea which side is going to win the bun fight for control over Newco Rangers, but, there is some interesting form to consider……

Just when people with money and a plan (on this occasion Ashley with the Easdales) look to have things sorted, the cabal, previously known as the Blue Knights, pitch up without the wherewithal to take control and drive a poisoned wedge between fans and club.

It’s a master-class in subversion.  Based on his previous exploits my money’s not on the tax crook (the one convicted in South Africa, that is) succeeding.

  1. sipsini,

Very true, I suppose Saturday will tell if we have a better team on the park. I still think that some of our players need to up their game regardless of formations.

Owen Coyle, arrrraggggh. Please RD make it happen.

  2. If PL left tomorrow maybe his replacement would see the managers post as the most important part of the club.

Without Jock Stein would McNeill, Johnstone, Gemmell achieve their full potential in green & white?

Without O’Neill would Larsson have carried us to Seville?

I still trust DD without him we are in trouble but I have struggled to appreciate PL since the appointment of Mowbray.

  3. Kevtic,

I understand what you are saying. Sadly I don’t think that managers are regarded nowadays as the most important part of the club.

They are now dispensable and usually get sacked after a few bad results, unlike players who have a financial incentive to be retained.

Contracts are not worth the paper they are written on and Chairmen now panic and allowing the time that Alex Ferguson got without tangible results is now inconceivable.

e.g. Tony Pulis can bide his time in the knowledge that he can take his pick of the jobs that will be available before Christmas.

I have a great deal of respect for guys like yourself who live far from Parkhead but get up at all times of the night to follow Celtic on dodgy streams or whatever.

However, your continual cheap, snidey gibes about the Celtic Trust have no basis in reality or any genuine understanding of the work they do.

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

I will feel free to express my honest opinions about anybody or anything which I feel is damaging to the interests of Celtic. The Celtic Trust is a selfish small minded organisation which has a left wing agenda and seeks to impose its agenda on Celtic, irrespective of the opinions of other Celtic supporters who may or may not agree with its agenda.

It uses young Celtic supporters to promote it`s agenda.

    Unforgiveable.

I have absolutely no problem with the fact that some of my fellow Celtic supporters have a different point of view, but I would never lower myself to describing those opinions as cheap or snidey.

    That would be hunnish.

  9. PL is too powerful at Celtic from picking managers and their assistants and his numerous cheap option striker investments.

His downsizing of all elements of the club apart from his £1M/ year package and his deployment of zero hour contracts shows his priorities.

We now have the weakest team in a number of seasons with a rookie manager in place. He squandered CL qualification this season by lack of investment after a warning last season. He will do the same next season and we will end up in EL again when the £30M Isis up for grabs.

Instead of welcoming the Phoenix club in a position of strength he will continue the downsizing with VIrgil also sold and cut price replacement located. There may even be another striker project with the failure of the invisible Serb — how many is that now.

PL is systematically destroying Celtic. People will only realise it when the Beancounter does not have a balance sheet to hold up as a trophy. That day is not so far away. PL will exit with £10M in loot from the Club as the highest compensated person in the clubs history.

Never mind what he inherited ( Seville ) to what state he leaves Celtic in. Consider the CL lost in 2 seasons £55M and his botched buying of strikers alone £20M and counting.

PL has failed the Club and its supporters ; the damage is done and the financials will soon reflect the downsizing approach. When that happens he will be gone and grinning like a Cheshire cat at how clever he has been. He has milked the money out of celtic in this period like no other individual. I expect him to placate the trust by a cynical ploy to cancel zero hour contracts, so he leaves his legacy intact.

I would not be surprised to see him leave before the Phoenix club arrives and he rides off into the sunset chuckling about how clever he has been.

The PL poodles need to waken up before it is too late — or maybe it is already.

  12. Celtic are to participate in a youth tournament organised by the English Premier League.

Stevie Frail’s development squad have been paired with Everton, Sunderland and Villarreal in the Premier League International Cup, which is being played entirely south of the border in what is a reported attempt to circumnavigate UEFA’s objection to the plan.

Seven other “foreign” clubs – Athletic Bilbao, Benfica, Borussia Monchengladbach, Porto, PSV Eindhoven, Schalke and Villarreal – will take part along with Chelsea, Fulham, Leicester City, Manchester City and Norwich City.

The tournament will run from October 15, 2014 until January 31, 2015.

A full fixture list is yet to be published, with the English Premier League only confirming the existence of the competition on the same day the first fixture is due to take place between West Ham United and Athletic Bilbao.

A statement from the league read: “All matches will be organised by the Premier League. Clubs will play each team in their group once and all matches, including those between international teams, will be played in England.

“Upon completion of the group stages the winners and runners-up from each group will progress to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, all to be played as single-leg ties in England.”

UEFA told STV on Wednesday they do not object to the tournament as the “matches are played in England only”.

Celtic’s development side won 2-0 on Scottish league business on Tuesday night against Hamilton Academical, with Leigh Griffiths and Stefan Scepovic scoring.

Young Celtic teams have also previously participated in the NextGen tournament, which pitted them against European opposition.

They were denied a place in the recently-formed UEFA Youth League this season after their senior side failed to qualify for the Champions League.

  13. Reducing the Cost of Football for all the Family

    By: Newsroom Staff on

IN the coming weeks, Celtic will play host to a number of crucial fixtures at Celtic Park that will have a massive bearing on the Bhoys’ season.

As ever, the potential success the club can achieve is greatly enhanced by the support Scott Brown and his team-mates receive from the Celtic faithful who take their place in Paradise for each game.

At a time when the cost of football across the country is under the media spotlight, the club acknowledges the efforts and sacrifices that fans make to support Celtic all over Europe.

With this in mind, and in response to direct feedback from fans, we are continuing to make further efforts, as we have over the last two seasons, to make supporting Celtic as affordable as possible.

Starting with the UEFA Europa League tie against FC Astra next Thursday, October 23, match tickets are currently on sale to Season Ticket Holders from £22 for standard adult seats, £17 Concessions and £12 Under 13’s.

On October 26, Kilmarnock are the visitors in the SPFL Premiership for the Sunday afternoon, 1pm kick-off. As Ronny Deila’s men continue their pursuit of four-in-a-row, the club are delighted to once again offer supporters of both teams a 2-for-1 ticket offer for this match.

Tickets are priced £26 for a standard adult ticket and every purchase will entitle fans to a free adult or child concession ticket for this game and a similar offer will be made available to Season Ticket holders in the coming weeks for another match at Celtic Park.

The Scottish League Cup quarter-final tie against Partick Thistle on Wednesday, October 19 at Celtic Park will be priced at £15 for standard adult tickets, £10 concessions and £5 for under 13’s.

These ticket offers follow on from a variety of efforts Celtic have made to reduce the cost of supporting Celtic for all sections of the club’s fantastic support. These include:

Adult Season Tickets rewarded with a £100 reduction in each of the last two seasons.

Introduction of £50 Season Tickets for Under-13s – just £2.38 per match

    13-16-year-old Season Tickets for £105 – £5 per match.

    17-18-year-old Season Tickets for £186 – £8.86 per match.

Student Season Tickets for £199 – £9.48 per match.

2 x UEFA Champions League Qualifying ties included in the Season Ticket package this season.

2 x complimentary tickets for all Season Ticket holders at four home games over the last two seasons.

This season’s UEFA Europa League three-match package, £60 for Season Ticket Holders – a £9 reduction from our 2011/12 participation in the competition.

Last season’s UEFA Champions League three-match package, £84 for Season Ticket Holders – a £21 reduction from our participation the previous season.

Celtic’s lowest priced standard Adult Season Ticket for the current season is £366, which works out at just £17.43 per match.

With the combined lowest priced adult and child (under 13) Season Tickets making the cost per match £19.80 for both to attend (based on 21 games in the Season Ticket package), it is our hope that this makes supporting Celtic, Scotland’s only participants in European competition, as accessible as possible in the current financial climate.

But it’s not just about making the game more affordable. The club are investing in providing a more entertaining day out. Millions have been invested in Celtic Park’s facilities to make matchday’s more memorable for all Celtic fans. This has resulted in new facilities including:

    The Celtic Way

    The new Celtic Family Stand

Brand new facilities for our Disabled supporters

The new Kerrydale Bar, providing live entertainment for all supporters on a matchday

Multi-award winning, full stadium Wi-Fi network

We will continue our efforts to provide the best value we can to all Celtic supporters and thank you for your continuing support of your club.

  15. NAGS

Mairise makes his hurdling debut in the opener at Uttoxeter today. He ran on the flat 7 times for Sir Michael Stoute, ( owned by Mrs Robeson’s brother) and showed nothing. Unplaced 7 times he was sent to Mrs Robeson. Clearly he was not considered good enough for the Stoute yard. He has made the switch to the small obstacles and as I say, will make his debut today. He has been running extremely well at home. He will win races over hurdles. Today’s jockey has already been in the yard and popped him over a few. He did a nice piece of work on him earlier in the week. The ground is perfect for him today.

It’s a real shame the race has broken up to 7 runners. I had been planning a hefty each way tilt at him, but now we are down to just 2 places at what will no doubt be single figure odds. I had wanted 16/1 or more in a big field. No early odds yet from any of the bookies so I’ve taken 12/1 last night then 8/1 this morning, on betfair.

Debut races are always a bit of an unknown, and it’s a race with a couple of runners having previous form, so it’s something of a suck it and see type of affair, but what I have to go on is his home work, and, stable confidence that he will be winning races before too long. I hope it’s today.

Have a modest go if you want to risk a few pounds in the knowledge he’s probably going to go off at a bigger price than he probably should, but with the caveat he is a debutant over hurdles and will definitely be a better horse after today’s experience regardless of how good or bad that turns out to be.

Good luck if you chance a couple of pounds.

  16. ‘GG:

Very commendable of Celtic, but with some fans it is not the cost of the ticket as opposed what is done with the money once it’s safe in the tin.

They don’t get a penny from me – no big deal – until they pay the living wage to all employees. How do they afford such extravagance, maybe dilute the bonuses of other affluent employees who don’t need to walk home from work, hungry, in the rain.

  20. Will be interesting to see how UEFA deal with the aftermath of the Serbia v Albania encounter especially when you take into consideration Celtic and St.Johnstone being fined for illicit (in their opinion ) flags.Although as the flag was attached to an airfix model i dpnt see what the Albanian FA could have done to avoid it.
