McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

Cheers my ghood friend. Yes she seemed to respond to our messages. The nursing home did a fantastic job, by bringing in an entertainer who delivers, “songs and memories”. Brilliant for people with who do not even recognise their own family. Canny get a spelling for Althiemers. :-(( but it was a good day. :-))) Thanks kiddo.

“domestically the trend is we make subs whilst ahead, and in Europe we do so when we are behind .”

That trend has less to do with substitution tactics and more to do with the fact that Celtic tend to be up in domestic games as we are the top seeds and behind in the Euro games as we are the bottom seeds.

“My thinking is Lenny tends to make a sub, gives the guy 10 or 12 minutes to make an impact, and if that doesn’t work he makes a second and third, invariably with same result.”

I did ask for evidence, though. I was already aware of your assertion. I was looking for some proof.

“In contrast Guys like Mancini, will make substitutions before half time, albeit they don’t always work.”

I was not aware of Mancini’s tendencies so I just checked tonight’s performance. He made one sub at the start of the 2nd half when they were 1:0 down. He did not make his 2nd sub until the 80th minute, by which time they had been level at 1:1 for some 16 minutes and he did not even bother with a 3rd sub. Not great evidence of a proactive approach there.

So I chose 3 games at random from the BBC site when he was in charge of Man City. I found the list from March to May 2013 and I chose, at random, the first game of each month.

In March, Mancini subbed on the 25th, 75th and 90th minute in a 1:0 away win (the match report makes clear the early sub was an injury breakdown)

In April, he subbed in the 71st, 89th and 90th minute in an away win at United.

In May, he subbed in the 46th, 78th and 85th minute in a goalless draw. The player he brought on at the start of the 2nd half missed an open goal and was subbed off again.

I looked at your assertion. I researched some evidence. I am not seeing anything resembling the story you believe.

Meant to say, the first lamb looks likely to be in the next couple of weeks. Will keep you updated on that. Hens are laying well, and got our first duck egg yesterday and one this morning. I always wondered how mrsweefra can turn an unborn lamb in the ewes uterus, and then I realise how she can paper the hall through the letterbox. :-)))

I hope you enjoyed your research.

For clarity, my hypothesis , not story, is we don’t make good use of our subs when we are losing.

My research is based upon the number of times we have fallen behind in games this season, and our success in turning those defeats around.

The empirical evidence to support this is against Morton, Aberdeen, Krazagandy, not to mention Ajax, Barca and Milan.

  13. the huddle & clashcitybhoy

My humble apologies. I don’t know how I missed that.

As a penance, I went back and checked his Man City subs and they are accurate.

It seems that tonight, Mancini did make 2 early subs and earned a draw. One match does not provide evidence of a sustained trend, though. I recall Neil Hooking hooking N’Guemo before half time in our SC semi with Ross County; we still lost 2 second half goals though.

I would still like evidence that Mancini, or any other successful coach, has a better subb strategy than our coaching team

Does that imply capitalism works? Have never seen any evidence to support that! Never!

( of course I haven’t see anything to prove socialism works either – it just fails in a fairer way 8-) )

  15. seems a strange way to conduct business at man utd. although they will need all the support they can get v olympiakos, it goes without saying they will need same for derby match.

My sister was telling me about a Horizon programme I must watch on catch up about how human beings reach decisions.

It seems that there is an inbuilt mechanism that diverts us from looking at evidence if that evidence contradicts an already held world view.

    Oh,yes.

Perfect example is the continuing ,and ongoing, suggestion from many on C.Q.N.that “socialism” is the answer.

“I hope you enjoyed your research.”

It only took a few minutes though I should have taken one more minute to ensure full accuracy :-)

“For clarity, my hypothesis , not story, is we don’t make good use of our subs when we are losing.”

It is an hypothesis, of the unproven variety (hence, a story) until the evidence is weighed.

For the hypothesis to become proven you would need to satisfy one of the two tests I set. Show me that NFL is particularly dilatory, compared with other good coaches, to make substitutions.

Listing games where we failed to overcome the loss of an early goal can easily be counterbalanced by :-

    a) Instances of games where we did overcome the loss of an early goal (United in November,Hibs in October, Inverness in August (2 down) and Ross County in the opening SPFL game this season.

    b) 3 matches (Aberdeen, Thistle and Heats where we won from a position of parity after conceding)

    c) Instances where the coaches with the earlier subbing habit have also lost a lot of games.

If you can satisfy those conditions, your hypothesis stands.
