Motherwell 0-3 Celtic

484

It was Roy of the Rovers stuff at Fir Park today at 18-year-old Tony Watt made his Celtic debut and scored the first two goals of the game within five minutes of getting onto the field.

Celtic have been notoriously slow to start games this season but were on the front foot from the off today as Pawel Brozek looked lively on his first start for the club.  They should have earned a penalty kick on 4 minutes when Victor Wanyama was dragged to the ground as he latched onto the end of a Ki free kick.

Thereafter Celtic’s experimental line-up laboured for much of the game.  Passing from midfield was profligate and the front pairing of Gary Hooper and Brozek was never a partnership.

After Wanyama’s penalty claim Motherwell enjoyed the bulk of the first half chances.  Craig Highton headed on for Chris Humphrey who had an excellent volley saved by an equally spectacular save from Lukas Zaluska to keep the scores level.  Humphrey then had a shot blocked by Thomas Rogne before the rebound was fired goal-ward by Steve Jennings to bring another fine save from Zaluska.

Wanyama started the game in an unaccustomed right back role but got forward on 34 minutes as he carried the ball 30 yards before threading a pass through to Brozek.  The Polish striker spun inside the box and prodded a shot but he missed the target.

The final minute of the first half brought two chances for Celtic.  Charlie Mulgrew did well to rescue a ball on the by-line before flighting a cross in which was knocked out to Kris Commons.  Commons shot from 18 yards went narrowly wide.  Seconds later Commons and Brozek combined before the Pole’s shot clipped Randolph on the ankle and trickled behind.

Motherwell were first to show in the second half when Nicky Law’s shot from the edge of the area was saved by Zaluska, who had a good afternoon.  Joe Ledley then pinched the ball from the toe of Humphrey after the Motherwell winger cut inside Izaguirre on the wing and set himself up for a shot inside the box.

Paddy McCourt, who replaced injured Ki, split the Motherwell defence open with a fabulous pass for Cha but the right wing-back’s cross went straight to Randolph.

Celtic then brought on Tony Watt for the ineffective Brozek and the teenager made an immediate impact.  Cha knocked-on a long ball for Victor Wanyama to run onto before crossing deep beyond the far post.  Watt had an incredibly tight angle but somehow managed to steer his touch between the posts, leaving Randolph helpless.

Two minutes later Joe Ledley exploited space in front of the Motherwell defence before passing to Watt just inside the box. Tony steadied himself before firing low and hard into the far corner of the net.

Paddy McCourt was quiet on his return to the team after a lengthy lay-off but on 83 minutes he used the abundant space afforded to him outside the Motherwell box to hang a back-post cross for Cha, who headed high into the net to complete the scoring.

What the support expects of Paddy is the exceptional – a mazy dribble culminating in a goal from an impossible angle. He can do that but maybe he’d be just as effective as an orthodox mid-fielder. He played in that role on Sammi Sunday and he did much the same today – to the team’s benefit.

  2. couple of minor irritations to comment on, and off to bed.

    * Paddy has never had an “awful” game. Not in my eyes anyways.

    * Deadwood – not a nice term, we have “surplus” players, everyone almost has contributed something, sometime. They didnt buy themselves, someone else did.

    keep it lit.

Out of it all the BTC has still to hit. I believe it will be a bit of an ELE for them.

If they wriggle out of that then the game is really a bogey and I don’t mean just football.

Paddy McCourt an abject lesson in why pure talent is never enough on its own. Probably one of the most naturally talented players I’ve ever seen in the hoops but either lazy or lacks natural core fitness?

He simply doesn’t move. Great on the ball but truly terrible off it.

I have to believe he has a natural lack of fitness, otherwise it is a sad indictment on our trainIng staff that this blessed talent hasn’t been allowed to flourish.

  5. 'crushed nuts?' 'Naw, Layringitis!' on

Watched Sportscene, where to begin? Whittaker’s two red cards – no mention, Little was clearly offside for third goal, Wallace had to score, voice over commentary for Celtic, no crowd noise for them.

    We’ve won!!!

cults.., wipe yer mouth, Paddy plays box to box and has had no problems keeping up with games, he covers more ground and make a greater contribution than ki, if you refuse to give him any credit then thats your opinion, but from what I’ve seen of him yer haverin.

  9. CELTIC will consider giving Tony Watt his first start in Sunday’s Old Firm game after his remarkable debut against Motherwell yesterday. The 18-year-old struck twice in his first six minutes on the pitch as Celtic scored three goals in the final half hour to win 3-0 at Fir Park. Watt would not have played had he not been suspended for tonight’s Scottish Youth Cup final against Queen of the South at Hampden, but manager Neil Lennon decided to give him some game time at Motherwell and he buried two fine goals. Johan Mjallby, Celtic’s assistant manager, said that despite also having Gary Hooper, Georgios Samaras, Anthony Stokes, Mo Bangura and Pawel Brozek available, the young Scot is in contention when Rangers come to Parkhead this weekend. “He’s definitely going to be in our thoughts,” said Mjallby. “The boy comes on and scores twice for you in a very tough away game against Motherwell, so he’s obviously going to be in our thoughts. He’s mentally strong as well which is good because if you are going to be a Celtic player the pressure is always there.” Watt joined Celtic in a £100,000 move from Airdrie 15 months ago but was made to wait for his chance. “We’ve had our eyes on him for some time,” said Mjallby. “He’s done really, really well for the under-19s. He’s a strong, powerful boy and he likes to get in the box and score goals. We need strikers who are hungry for goals, so we are delighted for him. He has to keep his feet on the ground now because tomorrow in training the boys will try to kick him and out-muscle him, but he has a great future.” Mjallby said discussions had begun with the Celtic board with a view to making three or four summer additions who could help the squad compete at Champions League level. “We are quite happy with the squad, no question, but if you look to the Champions League then we need maybe three or four really, really good players. But it’s a bonus to have Tony and he’s definitely going to be in our plans.”

Football pubs are all gone now

What an example Neil Lennon set

Unite like fans for Fabrice Muamba

    Gers crisis getting dull

It’s hardly a bolt from the Blues

But after the last couple of months at Ibrox, that’s surely how Ally McCoist must feel.

Sick to his guts. Choking with the dry boak over the incompetence, the double-dealing and the downright cowardice of those who run the club and those who did for years before.

When the rookie manager reacted to administration by declaring that We Don’t Do Walking Away, it was a typically sharp-witted moment for someone who’s always had as much of a knack for the telling quip as he had for the killer finish.

    You know what though, Alistair?

No one with an ounce of soul would think any less of you if you DID pack your bags and get the hell out of that shambles.

Right back at the start of the season, long before their financial implosion made Towering Inferno look like a chip-pan fire, I wrote that the status McCoist had earned through all those hundreds of goals and all that commitment to the cause would count for nothing if he couldn’t cut the mustard in the dugout.

Anyone who didn’t believe that this was so only needed to remember two words: John Greig.

Captained them to European glory and two Trebles, but booted out the door when he took over as gaffer and the trophies dried up. Once the Follow Follow brigade couldn’t swallow swallow being also-rans and turned their backs, Greig was done for.

So if the history of Rangers tells us nothing else, it is that unless the money and the success begins to flow again soon, those fans WILL desert them again.

Right now, the adrenaline of the situation, the feeling that it’s them against the world, has manifested itself in some magnificent shows of support — and there’s no doubt that McCoist’s now-famous rallying call back in February is a major reason for this.

But let’s fast-forward to November. Let’s say they’ve dug themselves out of the Doomsday Scenario, but are facing up to years of paying back their debts.

Let’s say the last of the big-hitters have had to be let go and journeymen brought in. Let’s say the EssPeeEll have gone through with their threat to make them start on minus ten points.

So they’re fourth and they’ve got no big European nights to look forward to and it’s peeing with rain and they’re playing Ross County.

Will there still be 50,000 there, baying their defiance and waving their red-and-black fundraising scarves? Or will it be down to 40,000? Thirty? Or the 12s and 13s they were down at the tail-end of the Greig era?

And if the faithful DO disappear like a barrel of buns in an elephant house, where will that leave the manager? Just turned 50. Stressed out of his nut. Determined to keep his chin up, but looking in the mirror each morning and seeing the beginnings of another one that can only drag his jowls downwards.

There’s no doubt this, the toughest season of his life so far, has taken a physical toll. Most people look increasingly gaunt under excessive pressure, but for me it’s made McCoist heavier, both in body shape and in his manner.

Were he in control of the situation and the heat was on him because he was the one sorting out the mess they’re in, you might reckon this temporary loss of his normally-bouncy demeanour was worth it for the long-term prospect of all being well with his world.

He’s not, though. He’s only in control of preparing and picking a team — and even then, his options could at any time be at the mercy of the administrators. If they said this morning that there was no more money to pay McGregor and Davis, that would be that.

But ask yourself, if come November a gang of Rangers kids and cast-offs is lying fifth and gates are down by half, who’ll carry the can? Duff & Phelps? Or Ally McCoist?

Anyone who doesn’t know the answer doesn’t know football. Simple as that.

You can see why he keeps on refusing to show weakness. It’s because he’s the last line of defence, the guy who wakes up every day knowing that if HE doesn’t stand firm, the whole thing could collapse like a pack of cards.

He’s only one man, though. One man with enough talents away from football management that he could be back on telly or in after-dinner speaking or whatever the hell he fancied just as soon as he was ready.

Put it this way. A month at a health farm, a couple of weeks on a beach somewhere and a fortnight on the ran-dan in Vegas? Or endless days of fretting and arguing and ageing, of being beaten to every name on your transfer wish list, followed by endless nights when sleep’s a tougher opponent than Franco Baresi with toothache?

If I was in McCoist’s brown brogues this summer, it would be a no-contest.

Honest,I didn’t AWE NAW that last line!

  25. Morning,

Loving reading the stupid huns now the penny has finally dropped.

    DTB site.

Fellow blue noses what do you need

to know about me? Uhhmm, other

than I live and breathe our club,

    what else matters?

    I’m looking forward to contributing

here and have to be honest I have

an agenda to get us looking above

and away from our current trials and

    tribulations. Rangers existed before

    the current corporate set-up and

will exist far beyond it, whether that

    new corporate identity comes now

    or in the future.

I want to talk about what Rangers

are – we are not an incorporated

entity, we are not a financially

    moribund trading organisation , we

are not a play thing for rich

investors. What we are is a way of

life, an attitude, an idea, a hook on

    which to hang our identity.

That way of thinking does not care

    for CVA’s, incubators or liquidation

it simply insists that the eleven men

who wear our jersey’s play for the

team the way we would. If you think

that way all this nonsense is

    transient. Miller, Murray, NG are

    unimportant. Rangers are important.

We are Rangers, and if any proof

    was required we’ve been given

plenty of it lately, no one likes us.

Lets take that and use it.

We did not make this situation but

we can easily remedy it by

    supporting Rangers, by believing the

truth – that whatever the outcome of

the current trials the history lives in

us and that we should never be

apologists for what we are. Don’t

    feed the gloating from the

    unmentionables, challenge it. If we

stick together we will always be

    Rangers.

We don’t support a company, we

    don’t support directors or

    administrators or who happens to

be custodian at any given time. We

support an idea that is Rangers –

courage, loyalty and a deep sense of

our place in Scottish society are

    what binds us.

Pure and simple Rangers are the

fans and as long as we’re still there

its still Rangers. No Surrender is not

a reference to historical cultural links

for me but an attitude that

separates Rangers from the rest. We

need it more than ever now. Time

for everyone to get their heads up,

get through what we will look back

at as a bump on a glorious road and

    ensure defiance rather than

resignation is our attitude to the

    world.

Revenge is sweet my friends. We

only won 2 titles between 67 and 86

but we lived the high life for the next

15 years. This short term blip will

give us our greatest triumph of all –

title number 55. The name of the

trading business will be irrelevant –

    we know the truth.

  26. Nice to read that the Blue Knights priority is not to pay rangers debt but to renegotiate the players contracts.

Murray was a major cog in Sir Minty’s regime, who prioritised signing players rather than run the club within its means.

    It seems nothing has changed.

    Stupid huns…

    From STV news

STV can exclusively reveal that following ‘high level’ lobbying and a promise of executive funding ‘if necessary’ ,   the fondly remembered ITV crime drama The Bill may be resurrected almost 3 years after its last screening.

The police procedural drama, fondly remembered by large sections of the fabric of Scottish society was considered as an interesting alternative to foreign football but fell foul of cuts at ITV in 2010 brought about by financial meltdown in the Latin countries.

However, hopes that the series may rise again, phoenix like, have been raised following intervention by First Minister Alec Salmond and MSP Murdo Fraser.  STV understands that a hybrid agreement with Thames Television  has been reached to recommence filming and incubating the footage  for unspecified period.

STV has learned that the intervention was backed by the SFA whose spokesman said “The SFA feels that European Football has become less of a priority  with the bodies that control the game here and as a result fully support the

    proposals.

It’s unclear whether the show will be shown throughout the UK or only in Scotland but the FM stated that his decision to offer public cash was founded on the Scottish values of  compassion,  fraternity and diversity Mr Salmond also revealed  he had also sought cross party support and was delighted with the response from all the main players. He added “Im sure the people of Scotland, indeed the fabric of Scotland will benefit

from this rekindled institution and I’m delighted that the main stream of Scottish society have shown such support”

In a discussion that it’s believed Mr Salmond thought was off record

He admitted that he was also following advice from Strathclyde Police.

STV hope to keep you posted on the dates of transmission by early summer but it’s safe to say midweek slots are being readied.

today is preferred bidder deadline day number (please insert your own figure here ive lost count) so all will be clear by midnight, ironically enough as the bells toll

the press would have us believe all is well, the RSA RST and Fuhrer Fuhrer have been fed a tale that a deal has been done, the creditors will roll over, a CVA will save the day, from HMRC (err us) who are owed many millions down to the wee wummin owed £40 for the face painting, everyone will realise that this institution just cannot be allowed to go under, this is after all the quintessentially brown brogued british club, where dignity is personified, thats sorted then,

the SFA SPL will adopt their usual stance and ignore their own respective rules and the (in)famous club will carry on as before, thats sorted as well then, so whats all the fuss about?

The fuss is my friends were in the real world, Glasgow Rangers (IA) will soon be no more, as the Donegal journalist said the other week, the world will be a much better place for that.
