Motherwell 0-3 Celtic

484

It was Roy of the Rovers stuff at Fir Park today at 18-year-old Tony Watt made his Celtic debut and scored the first two goals of the game within five minutes of getting onto the field.

Celtic have been notoriously slow to start games this season but were on the front foot from the off today as Pawel Brozek looked lively on his first start for the club.  They should have earned a penalty kick on 4 minutes when Victor Wanyama was dragged to the ground as he latched onto the end of a Ki free kick.

Thereafter Celtic’s experimental line-up laboured for much of the game.  Passing from midfield was profligate and the front pairing of Gary Hooper and Brozek was never a partnership.

After Wanyama’s penalty claim Motherwell enjoyed the bulk of the first half chances.  Craig Highton headed on for Chris Humphrey who had an excellent volley saved by an equally spectacular save from Lukas Zaluska to keep the scores level.  Humphrey then had a shot blocked by Thomas Rogne before the rebound was fired goal-ward by Steve Jennings to bring another fine save from Zaluska.

Wanyama started the game in an unaccustomed right back role but got forward on 34 minutes as he carried the ball 30 yards before threading a pass through to Brozek.  The Polish striker spun inside the box and prodded a shot but he missed the target.

The final minute of the first half brought two chances for Celtic.  Charlie Mulgrew did well to rescue a ball on the by-line before flighting a cross in which was knocked out to Kris Commons.  Commons shot from 18 yards went narrowly wide.  Seconds later Commons and Brozek combined before the Pole’s shot clipped Randolph on the ankle and trickled behind.

Motherwell were first to show in the second half when Nicky Law’s shot from the edge of the area was saved by Zaluska, who had a good afternoon.  Joe Ledley then pinched the ball from the toe of Humphrey after the Motherwell winger cut inside Izaguirre on the wing and set himself up for a shot inside the box.

Paddy McCourt, who replaced injured Ki, split the Motherwell defence open with a fabulous pass for Cha but the right wing-back’s cross went straight to Randolph.

Celtic then brought on Tony Watt for the ineffective Brozek and the teenager made an immediate impact.  Cha knocked-on a long ball for Victor Wanyama to run onto before crossing deep beyond the far post.  Watt had an incredibly tight angle but somehow managed to steer his touch between the posts, leaving Randolph helpless.

Two minutes later Joe Ledley exploited space in front of the Motherwell defence before passing to Watt just inside the box. Tony steadied himself before firing low and hard into the far corner of the net.

Paddy McCourt was quiet on his return to the team after a lengthy lay-off but on 83 minutes he used the abundant space afforded to him outside the Motherwell box to hang a back-post cross for Cha, who headed high into the net to complete the scoring.

Re my daily apology ritual to Mrs JQB, as revealed this morining.

I’ve decided – now that three-stage models are all the rage – to formalise this, in the hope that it can help others out there.

The JQB Apology Model therefore consists of the following stages:

    Stage 1: Discovery

The apologist wakes to a frozen wasteland, a terrible coldness claws at an already aching head, and an ominous stillness silently screams its warning. The apologist turns gingerly, to face the most awful stare ever to confront mankind.

Someone has done something, and it was bad.

Even before memory can kick-in, the apologist knows it was him.

    Stage 2: Denial

The apologist descends the levels of any remaining dignity through three steps, or excuses :

    1) It wisnae him

    2) Ok it wis him, but he was drunk

    3) He couldnae help it – he’s a determinist

    Stage 3: Retribution

The prosecution dismisses the absurd notion of a trial, and proceeds to straight to sentencing. This stage reveals the ingenuity and creativity of the prosecution; a definitive set of sentences, therefore, cannot be listed here. Empirical evidence, from JQB’s hoose, offers the following examples:

    1) An eternity of the nuclear winter, until you’re snivellin like a wean, pleading for any form of human contact

    2) A whack in the piles wi a paddle

    3) A trial by ordeal involving two bricks, plums, and a lot… a lot… of tears

Do you think I should patent this? It’s gonnie make me a fortune.

  2. Maybe the Blue Knights have managed to outbid Mad Bill and his incubator. And you can call that winning if you want.

But why would HMRC agree some sort of deal – and before the Big Tax Case tribunal reports too?

Also, if Ticketius get Whyte’s shares wouldn’t they then own the club? Or are we expected to believe that they just hand them over to the Blue Knights for nothing?

playing deep – he was in our half today receiving the ball. He’s not right.

  4. Lets clear out the squad and give our quality youths a real chance.

Fed up with inferior signings holding back the quality st kids mark2.

Zaluska played well and should play rest of season

Cha was his usual inconsistent self.

Rogne was good defensively but he needs to improve his distribution.

    Mulgrew was good

Izzy was quiet with occasional nice touch

    Victor was majestic.

Ledley was everywhere.Seemed there was 2 of him today.MOM

Commons had some good moments.Still finding his form

Ki was his usual ineffective self.We should sell.

    Hooper played to deep.

Brozek showed why he has not featured. No thanks.

Paddy played the 2 best passes of the day.One Cha muffed the other he scored.Wish we could find a place for his skill and vision.

Tony Watt brilliant wish he had more opportunities this season.

Lustig i think he looks good whenever he plays.

Twardzik was quality so want to see more.

    McGeough is the same.

Young Frazer was good in Europa.

Ibrahim have not seen but if reports are true he could be the playmaker we need.

Let the youngsters shine no more journeymen signings.

There is pub run or well known by CQN poster. If my memory serves me well one glass of good Czech or Slovakian beer costs less than £ 1,3.

I can’t claim to know who, if anyone , has been selected as preferred bidder. What I can tell you is that someone senior in the Rangers management was as down as I have known him to be when I spoke to him tonight.

Admittedly he has no confidence in ANY of the bidders, and he is just about bursting to stick one on the chins of Lafferty and Naismith and a couple of others in the playing squad for their hypocrisy. However he has felt that way for weeks now.

His demeanour tonight is because he knows the gig is up. He is sick of all of the bluster, the attention seeking and the denial. He’s a good guy, he is an honest guy. He’s in a very small minority

Barca can you elaborate on any of those points please

    particularly re the players

    ——————————-

Some of the old hands at Ibrox are utterly disgusted with some of the players. They have blackmailed Rangers over the release clauses.

Some have taken a £170 k pay cut but negotiated a reduction of £2 million in transfer price. At least half of that £2million will end up in the players pocket. The players were asked to reduce their transfer value by twice the amount of the pay loss. They absolutely refused, some very aggressively.

That has seriously damaged the chances of a successful transition .

I like the sound of that. BK takeover, Whyte out of the picture, then just when it looks like there’s a happy ending – Whoosh! – Ticketus sell the assets from under them

  14. evening folks

Ledley, Rogne and Paddy all impressed me today. Gret 3 points and on to next Sunday. Can’t wait. Taking wife and oldest son to their first game (and probably last) against them. In a way I hope they dont liquidate until after we pump them next week.

Finally – has anyone out there ever stayed at Phaethon Beach Hotel in Paphos – Cyprus?

  15. sparkleghirl,

This is the second time I’ve seen talk of a deal between Whyte and Ticketus.

We know that Whyte gave “personal and corporate” guarantees against the money advanced by Ticketus. The thinking now seems to be that Whyte is happy with whatever cash he has made over and above his £1 and will give Ticketus his shares rather than get tied up in legal matters.

So that leaves Ticketus out by the £20M+ they have advanced but in possession of 85% if the club. Wouldn’t they then want cash for those shares rather than giving them away and taking whatever they get from future ticket sales?

  16. Jackie mac:

The thing most people seem to forget is tha Paddy is certainly not match fit. He never gets a run in the team long enough to become such. I have to disagree with people who say he is either brilliant or awful. He has hardly played any games from the start. Even when does have a quiet cameo role he always does something that is a danger to the opposition. I have never seen him playing “awful”; he rarely gives the ball away even when he is not at his most exciting. I think our problem with him is one of perception & expectation: we all remember him slaloming past players & scoring spectacular goals. He can’t do that all the time. And besides he has more to his game than that. He has passing ability & real vision…but alas some people refuse to see this…because they expect him to be constantly brilliant in one particular way.

  17. SFFS

He left the pitch injured but no reports about how serious his injury is. No signs telling that this is something that will keep him out of the game for weeks. I saw the comment from Polish scout. Does he have scanner in his eyes and can do work via TV screen? Hm.

  18. Mr Zbyszek.

Any truth in the rumour that our Bosman signing,Jaroslav Fojut, sustained knee ligament injuries in a match this weekend ?

Lucky that we’ve got Darren O’Dea back and rarin’ to go….

Add Artur Boruc, and Tony Watt, and we’ve got players with ‘mallum’,from back to front….

Only then, will we Bring Back The Thunder…..

  19. if as I think we played with 3 at the back then I believe there is a place in the team for a no10.. be it Paddy or the young bhoy Ibrahim Forres or McGeough..

If rangers go toes-up before the next game (though I think they’ll limp on for a bit :))) ), it would be good if Celtic had backup opponents and/or a celebration event of sorts. Maybe technically difficult, as some may just want a refund on the game?

From Celtics point of view it would be better if a game of equivalent value could be organised. Us v Barca or Dortmund or sumfink like that?

Was 14 at the time and remember going out for a kickabout up the park when one of the lads went too far and was gloating over Italys win, he soon shut up when I put him on his backside.
