Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

  1. The worst today for me in terms of Motherwell’s assaults was Lasley’s last foul (not given). He lifted one of our players 4 feet in the air, and Higdon was ruled offside as he raced to our goal.

Had the flag not gone up we would have been looking at a 2-1 deficit. The challenge in itself could actually been a straight red, but because it was ignored by the officials it nearly resulted in a goal against us.

When you see Peter Lawwell and John Clark both shaking their heads in disbelief at the decisions you know the score.

If there is disharmony in the camp it sure as hell wasn’t evident today.

I saw the game live today but I’d like to see it again. Anyone know where I can download it?

Open your eyes and you’ll see a Celtic team who beat a good footballing team in Rennes convincingly 3 days ago then beat a bunch of hammer throwers in a must win game today. Good Spanish teams would have struggled at Fir Park today with pub players given a licence to kick punch and elbow anything in green and white.

I’ve criticised Lennon in the last few weeks but he deserves credit for the last couple of results. The squad look together, Stokes is in the form of his life, Hooper seems to have found a new hunger as a super sub, Paddy is hitting form, Samaras is starting to win the headers that a 6ft5 striker should, Waymana replacing Ki gives us extra bite and frees up Kayal to do his stuff, Izzy starts running this week.

Meanwhile, your boys in Royal Blue have a tax case this month which could literally put you out of existance. Get on to your own forums and at least try to save your club from the Ellis/Whyte before it’s too late. It will probably be in vain but at least you can say you tried!

We should be able to play Ki when we want.

Just cos he doesn´t play grass kung-fu and is a really good footballer should not keep him out of the side.

Why can´t we not play this player here and that player there?

Tell me another team in any other league who has to take into account that their good players can´t play certain games because they would get roughed up?

    Only Scotland.

  13. We weren’t fluid today but i’ll take the hard earned points. great shifts by many players today. looking forward to brown coming back. Older cqners who watched jinky, looking at Paddy play at times , is that what it was like to see jj ?

  14. OK. To those saying Paddy was ‘poor’ on Thursday.

I’ll let you into a secret.

Sometimes Paddy comes on and doesn’t create and score a thrillingly sublime goal.

    I know, shocking. But true.

Granted he wasn’t the best player on the pitch on Thursday, but poor? Really? Aside from the fact he was a perfectly timed slide tackle away from scoring another wonder goal, I’ve seen players like Mulgrew, Commons and Ki play like that and get zero attention.

People are looking for Paddy to fail – it’s perverse.

  15. EBM,

Fair doos…..i’m 100% in favour of guys like Ki but just sometimes we huv tae wisen up a bit. Ki’s a player indeed but here and there we have to match up physically, that’s all.

    Two quick questions.

1-Did you watch the game today in the pub?

    2-Did it open really,really early?

NO i didnt watch in the pub

in fact i dont drink alcohol at all.

i also dont believe that every referee has it in for us in scotland[although there have been a few that have]

i dont know what todays ref did wrong really.got a few free kick corner decisions wrong but nothing major.

i also wish i had a pound for every time i have been called a ‘hun’ on her,it appears to be a standard brainless reaction to anyone who dares question the percieved wisdom of the conspricy theory brigade.

too many excuses for our woeful team.mr lennon is the manager who assembled this squad and from what i have seen this season we are going nowhere fast.a couple of pretty fortunate wins in one week does not pull the wool over my eyes.mark my words we WILL unravel in the next few weeks and im sure the apologists will be hard to find on here.

i say take action now before its too late to make a difference.

and to anyone who still wants to label me a hun i will do what i have had to do a few times on here sadly to prove that i am merely just a hardcore celtic fan who likes to give an honest opinion……here is a link to a youtube video i did on the day of tommy burns funeral

  18. Does anyone happen to know where i can watch or download this episode of Réabhlóid that aired on RTE?

Episode 3 – Margaret Skinnider – A Woman of Calibre

It’s about a lady from Coatbridge who was active in the 1916 uprising.

It was seemingly available on RTE’s website, but only to people in Ireland, so I was ‘geo-blocked’. I can’t seem to find it on the newsgroups or torrents.

    Any help would be great.

    “Football must win”

No. CELTIC must win. Tony Mowbray took his purist footballing principles with him to Championship mediocrity where he belongs. The SPL is not save-able. We can’t change it and it deservers to rot. For as long as we are stuck in this hell hole of a league we might as well do what we can to win it. When we are bored of winning it we can come back and argue about the standard of football.

Ki maybe a good footballer we are a better team without him.

I would not personally label you a hun,but if you seriously believe the ref did little wrong today then there is little point in further discussion.

Apart from this one small point…

If you were up against an opposition who got away with what Motherwell did, would you even shake the ref’s hand at full-time?

I’d be more inclined to shake his neck.

  25. I’m really pleased with that today, sickened all the hacks, 3 points in the bag!!…..we are back on track, but still need to improve big time…The tabloids and the whole establishment are desperate for Lenny to go.They simply dont want this man at the helm of our club when the dignity ship sails sinks to the bottom of the sea…In my opinion, which will never change is that, there is only one man for us to stand beside and that is Neil Francis Lennon.

Oh and Lenny keep up the black out of the hacks..they are scum! That past week has seen them try and turn the pressure cooker up to max to try and de rail him and us….all I say is GIRFUY!
