Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

  1. I missed the first twenty minutes due to family ‘things’.

The next 70 minutes were as dispiriting as I have ever encountered. Not because of the team (I’ll talk about the game later) but because of the bloke who just hated every Celtic player who misplaced a pass, lost a tackle, didn’t do what he wanted him to, culminating in the statement as Sammy was led off injured ‘I hope you go and die’. I couldn’t not react.

Celtic supporter my arse! Mind you I think that there are some on here who empathise with that view. You’ll be ok as long as you don’t swear. He told me he posted on here , but wouldn’t give me his handle – he knew mine strangely enough.

The huns don’t have a monopoly on being disgusting.

Any interesting ISP’s on the go at the present time?

    Indeed.

I don’t think that Lenny wanted to play wee Forrest and Commons from the start, but he had no choice – there was nobody else left apart from Paddy and the youth team players.

Nobody seems to mention the injured players – we are in the midst of an injury crisis, make no mistake about it – a crisis it is.

Then we have certain comedians on here posting criticism of the manager and the players he has left at his disposal.

It doesn’t make sense to me.

Great result today against the haircut

    that time forgot. Horrible team

    managed by a horrible man.

Let’s hope the corner has been

turned after a great result midweek

and now a win away at a difficult

    venue. Agree with earlier poster

that barring injury that’s a game

    where Brown and Ledley should

    feature.

Interesting that the Hooper goal is being spoken of amongst Huns/pundits as being borderline offside. Absolute nonsense. It is clearly onside. Nothing like muddying the waters. Give it a couple of weeks and history is completely re-written and we actually benefited from a refereeing mistake therefore there is no conspiracy…paranoid Celtic fans…blah blah blah…

  9. Yahoo Sport doing a poll at moment asking to vote on the best UK manager of all time,,,fergie out in front with 50 odd percent……big Jock lies second on 14 percent…………..get your vote in there.

So I read and quite rightly post after post bemoaning the quality of refereeing and tacit encouragement of regular assaults on Celtic players today. Might I suggest that you put some real effort into your frustration and write as I have done to Neil Doncaster cc Stewart Regan. It will get you nowhere of course other than to have the satisfaction that you have actually done something to ensure that neither are left unaware that we know where the ills in the Scottish game lie and whose responsibility it is to sort them. Much more productive than moaning to each other surely?

  23. voguepunter,

I have heard this phrase I think from McCall before the game and Craigan used it at half-time:

    ‘Getting in about them’.

It is football parlance for telling players to kick all round them. I have never heard it used when SPL teams play the huns.

Also having heard McCall use this language prior to the game, the referees etc. should understand what approach a particular team is taking to the game and act accordingly.

That’s why we have to consider our future here. Even John Clark and Peter Lawwell looked fed up with the cheating today.

    Árd Macha

  24. Instead of Praising or slating individuals i think instead we should say well done to the lot of them,,,it was far from vintage stuff today, but when you are faced with a team who are allowed to boot you up and down the park by an absolute joke of a Ref.then i think both the players and the management team deserve massive credit for getting 3 points!!!

Wait,,,i cant resist singling out 1 player in particular,,, KAYAL i though he was a warrior today, others followed his example today, long may it continue!!!!

  27. Today’s refereeing performance was no isolated incident

but part of a much deeper systemic problem going

    back decades.

I know i’m preaching to the choir but still needs to be said.

I’m guilty of disliking Samaras – I dislike him (Or what I see of him) – and I’ve stated it often.

Yet I fall short of wishing him harm.

I shared a pub today with Celtic supporters who wanted to discuss the political correctness of Coloured B or Black B – which was correct?

    I despair.
