Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

Refereeing today – lots of honest mistakes. Players should go on strike. Lucky nobody got a career threatening injury.

    Spot on.

Celtic and NL fielded the best available side today, just like a tough Euro match we opted for one recognised striker ( and he still scored ) without a

recognised twin partner, and the much maligned Sammaras takes enormous credit to make three assists, in as many days.

The substitutions worked again just as they did against Rennes, this time when Motherwell had finished or couldn’t afford to kick any more. Paddy McCourt set up Hooper running at a tired Motherwell, and NL for once got a break with his tactic.

Comment of the day was that it was playing against eleven Ian Black’s, with Ian Black as the referee. – @FiKennedy

    “Flute and sash (sic)” pathetic.

Pardon me for having an opinion on one incident in the game which doesn’t follow the flock.

Did you bother reading the full post?

Quite glad to compare Celtic credentials.

If you stop behaving like a hun, I won’t call you a hun.

It’s easy, if you think about it.

  8. 3 Things to say:

    Excellent battling back result;

    Our defence is far from the finished article;

We must not accept such blatant strong arm tactics from our opponents. If the referee doesn’t handle it we must nail him.

  9. Chi Ki Yung said on Radio Scotland that Hooper looked offside and that Clancy did not seem to have done anything to deserve a red. In short, Richmond made two significant errors.

He recanted when corrected by others about both incidents.

Later when listeners complained about Richmond the self same Chi Ki Yung said that we should be talking about the game not the ref and that in any case he thought the ref was okay!

I didnt catch first half. Am assuming well kicked us all aver the pitch.

Love it that Kayal and SUPER Wanyama controlled mid. Kayal is back to his ferocious best which is good news for us. Wanyama has impressed me every time I have seen him. MUST stay in side. Stokesy is really giving his all and is very effective because of it. Well done Celtic. Could be a pivotal match today. Instills some self belief.

As for Stuart McColl and his team of officials and players, you got what you deserved today, NOTHING!

  11. The Honest Cover-up on

    Lazydynamite,

3 or 4 nil, aye ok. Against that kicking elbowing mob with Richmond giving them free reign to assault our players a 4-0 victory would have required a superhuman performance. Had we done that you’d probably be on here cursing the team for failing to score 5 or 6!

20 one goal margin victories in a row would do me nicely rightly. And your misery would only mean more champagne for the rest of us!

There is a long way to go before we can say we’ve turned the corner but with the backing of our support and application of the team/management it can happen. Fortunately, you are not a typical Celtic supporter (if you are one at al)

  12. Despite more joke defending and the best efforts of one of Ayrshire’s finest in the middle, it was a right good win.

Perhaps most encouraging was that, for the second time in four days, Celtic were prepared to battle all the way.

  13. After the game, I walked back to my car which I’d had to ark at the back of a local “Brookside” type scheme, just on the Craigneuk side of Shields Road, a group of 9 year olds came running out of their house to welcome back Well fans returning from the game.

One of them shouted out to a fan from the game, referring to Celtic, “Did you see those diving gypsies?”. obviously raised by a local bigot.

My spirits only rose when I saw a solitary Celtic fan out washing his car and making sure to ask every returning Well fan “What was the score, mate?”. Ah! the simple joys!

  14. As far back as his Radio Clyde days young was assuring us that Scotland’s referees were the best in the world.

  15. Despite the bullying tactics of murderwell we came away with a result today,

Despite the “ineptitude” of auchinlecks finest we came away with a result today,

As the season rolls on we will meet similar if not the same obstacles from our opponents and the MIB

Lets be ready for it on all fronts.

  16. EWO

Was really impressed with Stokesy today he worked incredibly hard.

I was also impressed with Kayal, who I’ve been critical of and I know you’re not a fan, but thought that big Sammi did well.

  18. Good afertnoon friends.

A very pleasing hard fought victory with absolutely no protection from the referee. Stokes’ attitude over the last half a dozen games has been fantastic.Big Victor should also be a first pick – lost count of the number of times the Well players just bounced off him.

Oh and I thought big Dan carried on from Thursday giving another fine performance.

A good time for a 2 week break now and by the Inverness game we might have more of our players available for selection.

Still beautiful and clear skied over EK.

    >> Acquiesce or resign, Celtic. Which is it?

I really hope it doesn’t come to that. We would have nowhere to go, but if the HMRC claim is upheld and Them prove too big to fail, staying in a league that was so blatantly corrupt and condoning financial fraud would be too much for me. It would be better to bring the whole edifice down on their unworthy heads and start again.

That is the situation in a nutshell.

How can we condone and continue playing in a corrupt system.

As for “no place to go”

We would have to give two years notice. Which would give UEFA and any league who would feel the benefit of having Celtic in their ranks, time to think.

We have enough acumen at Celtic Park to formulate a case of unfair trading conditions, that a European Court could be interested in.

The main point is, for this scenario to play out, it would take the huns(for Awe Naws benefit) to suffer an event, which would normally cause a club to be demoted; or a Newco to start from the bottom, IF they were voted into the SFA.

If this became the case, then the case would be presented as the SFA flying in the face f their own and UEFA’s rules, whether the clubs voted for the hun’s reinstatement of not.

    Hence, acquiesce or resign.

We can’t stay in a demonstrably crooked game.

  20. thomthethim,

    Great posting.

Worried that you may be right about our continued participation in this league.

Quote of the day from me on twitter from the Human Torpedo:

“Jennings & Lasley now walking a tightrope. Both are now only another dozen career ending fouls away from a second yellow…”

  21. The Realist

“A welcome result; but one which merely papers over the cracks. ”

Not at all! In the past two games we have been working hard (applying plaster) not papering (playing prettily).

Whether we have enough plaster to counteract the damage Rangers & refs are trying to do to our walls is a separate question.

  22. I’m sure Richmond was demoted because he awarded a penalty in a game for handball on the goal line (preventing a goal) but then forgot which player actually handballed it so couldn’t send them off. He got booted down a level and they tried to force him to quit but he never did.

I’m sure this is right but I’ll check tomorrow with my work colleague who’s a ref (a mini hun surprise surprise, though he does despise Dallas).

  23. Zenden training with Celtic.

Comparisons will be made with Ljungberg but big difference is Bolo played Premiership football last season with Feddie had not done anything it years.

We need the right experience – players that have played at a higher level then SPL – whether it’s Bolo Zenden or someone else.

  24. Still scunnered despite great result.

    Country of cheats.

The lack of analysis of the refs cheating will come tomorrow and airbrushed from history.

Tomorrow’s headlines will be about Celtic scraping victory against ten men.

We will never be allowed a level playing field.

We have to find a solution or there is no point.

  25. What abt Craigens tackle on Paddy?? Shocking!! Not even a word in his eerwhole!!

Kevtic. Run your post by me again. Naw just give me the time of it and ill read it again.

  26. One of the most satisfying aspects for me this week is the fact that we didn’t prioritise/sacrifice one game for another. The result midweek was just as important, if not more, than the result today. Without the victory on Thurs I seriously doubt whether we could have got ourselves thru this very difficult and important game today. Hopefully this week is a turning point…….we were asked a lot of questions, but the answers were there for all to see. KTF.
