Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

  4. Ach, tae hell wae the ref and murwell’s kicking, it’s wrong but it will never change….3 points in the bag, and we’re right back in the game!!

Time tae focus, keep it tight (if that’s possible!!) at the back, keep Ki out the team in away games like this and man the f**k up and get stuck in. If we match the rest of the spl dross for graft, then the skill will see us through. But we MUST match them in terms of effort and physicality first.

agreed…but there must at least be the perception of fairness. It is after all supposed to be a sport.

  7. Zenden is a big-headed big time Charlie. Maybe that’s what we need, but I hope Lenny isn’t expecting too much from him in the winter blood and snotters months. Not the right sort of experience imo

If you remember Celtic had the Dallasgate game viewed but some independents – I think someone from a sociological/psychological background found that Dallas’s body language, demeanour etc were very pro one team. Celtic were openly villified in the press for even having the audacity to action this research never mind go public with the findings. That was Pandora’s box then and the establishment has, on the whole, kept the lid on it since.

There have been a fair few on this site over the last couple of years hammering on about our players getting kicked with impunity, but being booked themselves if they dare complain,or even breathe on an opponent.

We were usually told, twas ever thus,so just get on with it.

Glad to see so many wakening from their torpor, and for a number of the players to be getting wired in.

If I had a wee mate in the pub who was getting a kicking from a group of thugs the way James Forrest was at Fir Park, retribution would have been swift-and final.

No point getting booked for complaining,a boot where it hurts is the only way to stop this. Players in the past did it,and we need the Bertie Auld,Davie Hay,Big Roy or Chris Sutton types NOW!

    Today was a disgrace —-

All UEFA documents feature the UEFA logo and the words _

    WE CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL——–

    Mmmm .

Article 7 of The UEFA Charter requires National Associations – eg -The SFA to—

” observe the principles of integrity and sportsmanship in accordance with the principles of the game ‘

    And to ——-

” Respect the laws of the Game “. .

    Go to it – Celtic.

  13. If that was a game in Europe I reckon ‘Well would have had more than one player sent to the line. Fairplay to Paddy he could make one of his mazy dribbles without being chopped down because he knew a few of the opposition hardmen were on yellows.

  14. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!! Tick Tock !! on

Off to watch a game of FOOTBALL now on SKY….where the ref will at least apply the laws of the game to the best of his ability……

  15. Maggie,

Too right, couldnae agrere more…just trying to say that the win should be the main talking point. McCall aye sends his team out like that against us but that’s about aw they’re capable of. They’re no worth tuppence in footballing terms, just like Inverness for example.

We are being reffed differently from other teams.

Assault after assault comes our way.

That´s what it´s called if it happens on the street.

We try to play football, not K1.

We have a long list of injured players.

    We know why.

    We see it every week.

The club need to make a complaint. Today.

    This can´t go on.

No wonder Lenny can´t talk to the press after that.

If I was him I would be afraid of exploding in front of the cameras.

We are being conned. Cheated. Screwed. Ripped off. Being flogged a dead horse.

How can anyone be fooled into believing that was an impartial performance by Richmond today?

The club needs to act now.

Just like last year with Dougie Dougie, complain when we´ve won and not lost.

It doesn´t smack of sour grapes.

Do it Peter, earn your bonus.

  17. Mr Romanov stated: “For seven years I keep hoping that in the country that is the cradle of football they will start respecting the game and stop taking the mickey out of the game itself and the people who are trying to fight for it, but it’s like asking the mafia for remorse.”

Also liked his reference to meeja monkeys :)

This fella could be a hero of mines, once he closes the mini huns down: flat, flats, glorious flats.

  18. i just call it as i see it.

i remember a game we lost to st johnston earlier in the season to their only shot on goal in 90 mins in which i described us as very very unlucky.we must have created 10-12 good goalscoring chances that day and hit the bar a couple of times yet we lost.

if memory serves me right the celtic team were roasted on here but not by me.

today however i believe we were at best the equal of motherwell.infact i think they had 10 or so corners to our 2.!

i accept the result and acknowledge our players worked hard.i do however firmly believe that we a rank rotten heading for a complete oblivion in the next few weeks.

might aswell get rid of lennon now so the new manager will have at least a fighting chance of turning the season around.if we allow the gap to increase much further the season will become a series of meaningless matches in the shadow of rangers 4 in a row celebrations.

  19. Uly

I can understand the support going mental that day,I am in upper north stand, and was ready to dreep onto the park and give agent dallas a boot

up the erse, good job I’m feart of heights .

  20. Daryll Broadfoot told the Justice Committee of the Scottish Parliament that the new improved SFA had the trust and backing of all members.

If Daryll says we are all happy now that Dallas is gone that will be that then.

  21. Imatim and so is Neil Lennon on

    2010 Never Again

What we witnessed today was a display of thuggery at its worst.

What we witnessed today was a refereeing performance of complete mibbery.

Where other than Scotland would a referee who has not refereed a major league game for over 12 months be appointed to a high profile game such as the game today. Where?

You would expect such a referee to be given a low profile game and not a game where there was so much at stake, surely.

We now have players who are looking over their shoulders waiting on the tackle from behind that will end their careers. It is that bad. Gary Hooper and James Forrest being classic examples of this. It is disgraceful.

Every team we play are putting the boot in with complete impunity and getting away with it.

It is open season on Celtic and they all know it.

When we stand up to it or ask the question the cards are quick to come out and put Timmy in his place. Beram Kayal got one last week for asking why his face got trodden on and Anthony Stokes today for asking why it was alright to get manhandled.

If anyone wonders why we sustain so many injuries look no further than the number of players who are being attacked regularly with no protection from the MIB

The fix is well and truly in. Scottish Football is corrupt to its very core and the legacy of Dallas lives on.

The MIB are worse than ever. Something has to be done about it!

    Two quick questions.

1-Did you watch the game today in the pub?

    2-Did it open really,really early?

  24. Interesting to compare Hooper & Stokes respective strike rates for Celtic. Very similar.

Stokes 28 goals in 53 games (53%) and Hooper 30 goals in 54 games (55%)

  25. by the way, just watched that Lasley tackle on forrest at 23:54….commons blocks the view a wee bit but that is straight red tae me.

  26. Eyes Wide Open on

Not sure about you folks, but the manner in which we had to win today, made it feeling like we had won a cup final at the final whistle.

There are areas we need have needed to urgently work on for a number of weeks now. We arent and are suffering almost per game as a result – 1. The manner in which we start games and 2. our defending at corner kicks. (someone earlier on counted their goal as from ‘open play’ – garbage. The goal came as a result of our positioning and marking at a corner kick).

The evidence is indicating the answers do not lie within.

    Couple of pointers;

Thought the central defence dealt with everything that came out them well.

I thought Kayal was back to his best – an absolute terrier. He came in for some savage treatment from the motherwell animals and he just kept on going back for more. Keep that armband on his arm.

Commons didnt really look interested. I have a feeling it was caused by the savage treatment he was also picked out for – and as opposed to Kayal, he went hiding.

I thought Samaras did well for us today. Another assist to his name – an improvement from no goals or assists. He certainly didnt hide – fair play to him for that. A few ‘Samaras’ moments but he was quite important to us aerially.

It was too physical a game for Forrest and Id have taken him off for McCourt.

Paddy needed that today. His performances this season have generally been quite lathargic, and he was poor again on Thursday. Well done you.

Wanyama seemed fairly quiet to me – was it me or was he generally less effective than he has been (I had a 5 month old grabbing my attention at points in the 1st half especially).

The support once again were awesome. Absolutely awesome.

Referee – is a graduate of the Hugh Dallas referee fraternity. He was a real throw back to the ‘old days’ where the rule book was re written throughout the game to suit who it needed to. I would estimate 20 decisions that went for motherwell or against Celtic today. Thats just inexplicable and even if we took the ‘cheat’ element out of it – that level of incompetence just can not be tolerated.

Was he dropped from the SPL last year did the commentator say? Anyone know the offical reason?

Excuse my ignorance ,my Celtic friend.

  28. More thoughts on the game …

    We struggled at times.

Play was a bit disjointed and a couple of plyers were playing for themselves.

    That’s right – AS – take a bow.

Early goal and then it was all ego trip.

    Coaching looks suspect.

    Lacking in on field intelligence.

AM must be sponsored by the NHS given the number of hospital passes he played.

Midfield was over-run far too many times for my liking.

BK turned up for the second half.

VW was struggling to cope at times, is he the right manta to track the M/well RB?

They played 3 in the middle and we were outnumbered on far too many occasions.

Tight park so to play down the flanks was not the answer.

FF kicking the ball straight out, do we not practice enough?

Regarding M/well and their ” Buddy Ball” tactics – we need to sort this out before the SPL works us out. If we don’t meet this issue head on then we are going to lose a player to a career ending injury. The MIB are not going to help us so we have to sort it out ourselves.

If the opposition start putting the boot in then we have to react in kind for the sake of the game. How much injury time was played and how as it caused?

    I can’t remember a M/well player needing attention.

Turning the other cheek in a late 50’s stylee is not the answer.

  29. That was one hell of an important three points today. If there are any celtic fans who dont know what we are up against now, thugs and cheats, then your eyes are firmly closed. Not one ounce of protection from that cheating mib today.

We shouldnt expect anything different next time either—inverness and another ex hun manager to get his players to kick lumps out of us.

Great three points. Cmon ye celts.
