Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

Four Green Fields, do you remember the Partick is protestant graffiti on the ledge of a close next to the railway bridge?

The ledge was on the second floor and you could really only see it from the upper deck of a bus or on a train going into the station travelling from Hyndland. It summed up the more loyal residents of their behaviour vandalising a lovely sand stone building.

Delaney’s, you and Lou were on top form on the way to and back from the Forest game.

Did you not have the full strip on even though it was freezing?

The upper deck of the bus was roasting on the way back and you were ok as you had your shorts on. There was some members on the bus in their y’s and simmets due to the heat on the bus.

You do not want Independence for Scotand as you have both stated.

What do you want to happen on September?

Do you ever see Scotland being an Independent country?

  9. Watching the results coming in it would look like a coalition government at the next election. Who do you think UKIP would make a deal with to form a government?

The polls are all showing Labour will win the next General Election.

Turnout will probably be about twice what it was on Thursday.

UKIP will get no more than 1 MP (Nige).

  12. Awe-Naw, hope so.

July looks like a go, but need to check with the boss, if not November is a go.

    Billy bhoy 05, thank you.

I gave up drinking when I was 18 as I couldn’t cope with the hangovers. Giving up voluntarily didn’t bother me.

In Dublin for the Shamrock Rovers game in 1986, I tried some Guiness and as the song says, four wheels came off my wagon.

However, now that I had to come off the ale and had no choice in the matter, I find it annoys me not having an ice cold beer particularly when its a hot day and people are sitting having a drink.

I have psoriatic arthritis and the medication I’m on helps ease the pain. Its a worthwhile sacrifice not to endure as much discomfort as before.

  15. Billy bhoy05 I stick to my ascertain. You are disgusting.

You want to send those who vote for the union to England. You compare no voters to OO and the BNP. You dny you say it then say it’s taken out of context.

Now you compare national, newspapers (which I don’t read) with an openly propaganda site for the SNP.

Independence for Scotland?? Why? We get to keep the queen and our economy remains linked with the BOE. What’s the point? I have repeatedly pointed out the danger regarding sectarian Scotland. You have no arguments against that. Worse than that you are trying to dehumanise anyone who wants to vote no.

Enough to make me vote no.

There is no economic argument for independence.

You then have the nerve to tell me to admit I am wanting a Tory govt. what bollocks but then again what do I expect from you.

    Pathetic

Delaney’s, didn’t know that about Cokey’s dad. No wonder Cokey junior had a rebel streak.

His love of our team was and is a joy to behold particularly his treatment at secondary school.

I read kmck article on our ex manager.i know all he chronicled bout his treatment is true, your right he disnae miss anyone..HE DOES.he misses out the establishment that gave us 300 years of political, civil and cultural heritage that arrives at the very political social and cultral establishment he appears unconfortable with today

Why is that? Why should I be weary of this establishment and trust those who set up the old one?.what is kevin disillusioned with? I note also no mention of Labour or what part that party played in making Scotland reach this point as well as no critique of their let down of their old core voter.
