Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

  1. McDowellcelt god bless wee oscar on

According to reports john park has been headhunted by Norwich to become director of football.

  2. Niallo67. Our club was in absolutly no finacial crisis last summer

We had no need to sell vic

We made a massive hole in our midfield

The cash is still in the bank

He was only sold to present figures at AGM

Our team was worse last year due to money being put in PL bank account

Bring on the Hibs the Hearts the Rangurs

    Show them the championship door

If you want to see what the donut and Celtic PLC want in the SPL the season after next keep your eye on the honest mistakes next season on the Scottish Championship.

As for wanting the current hunguard back to cheat Mainly Celtic, other Scottish teams and debtors for a another billion pounds and 21 trophies as a lack of “banter”…….. Words escape me

  6. niallo67- good points well made but sadly far too sensible for this jam today, jam tomorrow, jam the following day spend big and to hell with the consequences forum.

  7. Good morning friends from a dry and bright-ish East Kilbride.

Heading through to the ole Kingdom later to batter a golf ball repeatedly around Kinross so any local weather reports would be helpful.

  8. Goldstar. I am never for going in to huge debt

What I am saying is we had no need to sell vic last year

  9. Sydneytim,

With all due respect you are missing the point. You are correct. There probably wasn’t any major need to sell Vic last year but selling players when they are performing well at massive profit is a key attribute of the buy low sell high policy. You’re kinda saying you agree with the policy and agree with the buy low part but not the sell high bit.

Vic may have got injured this season (he did at Southhampton), he may have suffered a drop in form (like Kayal has since 2011) and if he had stayed he would be entering the final year of his contract now. If we had held onto him there is a very good chance we would not have sold him for a fee as high as we did. If he stayed for another season who could have left for nothing!!

Benfica have lost all their best players over the last 5 seasons (Luiz, Witsel, Matic, Javi Garcia, Fabio Coentrao, Di Maria, Ramires etc.). They made a massive profit on player sales in that period and they are now in a position where their squad and club is much stronger than it was 5 years ago. Winning domestic leagues and cups, last two Europa League finals, tier 1 team in CL pots.

So again my point is buy low sell high involves selling your best players at high fees so you can reinvest in the team AND the club. This means that in the short term the first team gets weaker but in the longer term the whole club (including first team improve).

I don’t think there can be any argument that selling McGeady weakened our team initially. However, the money was invested in players, facilities scouting etc. and today the football club, squad, first team is much stronger than it was in 2010.

  10. Now the Record is listing Di Canio for the Celtic job.

These editors are now just making absolute fools of themselves. Give it till the end of the week and they’ll be quoting David Hay as a candidate.

    Desperation.

  11. Is Garcia trying to talk himself out of managing Celtic? Why blab to the press?

    Nialo83,

I am an optimist and as such my demands are high. Spending money wisely should be our main focus along with a good manager who is tactically aware.

Signing Balde, Pukki, boerigter and perhaps Biton represent poor value for money. .. Regardless of who had the final say on signing them.

I’ll use this to get another personal gripe in. Pukki was never a goal scorer. Neil Lennon was trying to tell us he was. He is looking like a poor mans Andi Thom or at best Stuart Slater. Who had the final say on these players and what did they add to team who had just sold better? Buy low and sell high to bring in better but not worse.

Amido is clearly not a Celtic player. Hamilton might do well with him but Champions league?

  13. Niallo. Mcgeady was sold under Neil’s nose. Neil had his hands tied at CL qualifiers as he could not play Mcgeady and he was installed late to buy any players John Reid admitted later that Neil was the only candidate

Bang went huge sums from CL

As for vic , Neil had said privately to many sources he was exited that all the hard work put into vics transfer would pay off with a large transfer budget. He was shocked when he got none ( well he got 1m for griffifths ) of those funds and was fuming that the AGM shouted from the roof tops of all that vic money in the bank , but that Neil got none of if to invest in the team

Vic was sold for one reason only

To post wonderfull cash in the bank results at AGM

It was embarrassing when PL in April said what a wonderfull balance sheet we had the day before our empty midfield was overrun by the sheep in the cup

CFC can’t be compared to Benefica re transfer dealings …the immigration system in Portugal allows Benefica to have access to a huge pool of talent from South America

  15. Gosh now we can all look forward to signing top players. Scotland is going to become a sunny and cosmopolitan country at last. I hear SKY have already contacted the SPL about a new TV deal. Let the good times roll.

  16. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Well done Real on achieving 10 big cups.

Although, to general bafflement for a team of such pedigree, success in the Copa del Ramsden continues to elude them.

And well done Hamilton Academical for sending Hibernian to their deserved relegation.

  20. Steve Evans ” I’m just from a wee council estate in Glasgow”

What a job he has done with Rotherham. Back to back promotions. That’s 4 promotions on the bounce for Steve after doing back to back with Crawley. Well done Steve Evans.

  23. Morning all. Again very changeable down here. One minute a bit of sunshine, the next a downpour.

Anybody know when the Scottish results are to be declared? Ukip, eh. Make you sick.

M McG – what three things would you do to change the situation Celtic find themselves in? Please do not say what you would not do!

  25. 79 caps…but I think they are only seeded for qualifying round 2. If they were unseeded in 3rd round, which as I say I think is the case, then I assume if they got through q2, then yes we could eventually face them.
