Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Cant work out why there’s all this fuss about LG, chances are he’ll be shipped out on loan in the summer as we bring back Tony Watt. Still, gives the bog something to chew over I suppose.

Stokes has just recently signed a bumper new contract so he won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. After playing out of his skin and looking in the best shape of his life just beofre he re-signed he seems to have hardly kicked a ball since. Think it’s called John Hartson Syndrome.

Griffiths would be a good addition I think. Stokes misses big chunks of the season through injury. The rest of our current strikers simply don’t score enough goals.

I would doubt very much that Tony Watt will be seen in the Hoops again. He’s in the transfer window and will be sold in the summer.

When I was stumping up for my season books they could have informed me I was going to be losing 2 Saturday 3 o’clock home fixtures due to Dublin and Turkey trips.

I have no problem with the club doing these trips, I think however, they should have the decency to tell people buying season books they were considering these fixtures.

While I agree, I don’t think the Turkey trip was even on the cards at season book renewal time. The decision to have a winter break wasn’t taken until after the season started as far as I’m aware.

  8. Afternoon all. Well it’s another day closer to the “deadline day” (Jim $hite is ina cold sweat already!!) and we have a few other names added to the List.

Of the newbeis the one who interests me is the young Romanian winger/striker Dorin Rotariu of Dinamo Bucharest. A real find but at 18 he’d probably be sitting on the bench and find himself loaned out in the summer so maybe not.

Anyways here’s the latest updates of the List!

Our big need is to be ready for June and the upcoming CL Qualifiers.

It is what we do now, or more to the point what we should have been doing earlier in the month, that will determine our readiness for the above Qualifiers.

  17. paolosboots FC before PLC on

In relation to Leigh Griffiths i’m torn in a number of directions. I am concerned he’ll make the front pages more than the back, acts like a “daft laddy” but then he scores very good goals from everywhere & has a swagger on the pitch like when he plays he knows he’s good not a bad thing in my book. When assessing his stats he has 31 goals in 66 games for what was a poor Hibs team & Stokes had 22 in 40 which doesn’t instill me with any great optimism.

However when i look at Finnbogason a year older with 43 in 50 in the Dutch league I can clearly see the difference. However is he worth 10x as much? £7m & LG £700k , only time will tell. My heart says that we are doing the usual celtic thing of talking big on spending £6m on a player & then peanuts but Griffiths has proved he can do it in the spl where other “projects” haven’t. You see I’m still torn!!! however if we don’t qualify for group stages of the CL then our signing strategy will have to be reviewed!

Am disappointed for those fans living further away in the UK & those friends of mine in Dublin who are being inconvenienced once again with fixture movement after the Antalya tournament that’s at least 2 home games this season, its money lost on flights, tickets & accommodation again! When will the club realize the inconvenience this causes & stop taking them for granted?

I think as long as Samaras isnt near the team and on his way to West Ham/whoever. He is too often left wandering around aimlessly in games, yes 1 in 8 he playes well or scores but it slows the team down and we have players who deserve a chance. I thought with Stokes out Pukki woul dhave been given his chance on Sunday, did well when came on so hopefully should start.

Any news on Ledley deal? Hope he stays as adds great balance to midfield.

“I know he has baggage off the field but we all did. You can manage that. If he comes then he is here for the football and not the controversy.”

My problem with that is that the off-field baggage suggests someone who has a bad attitude. Players with bad attitudes do not make great players. And certainly not great team players.

They move around a lot. They even do well at some clubs – usually smaller clubs where they are the best player and the other players do not feel they have the gravitas to challenge the “best player”. But they never last too long in any one place or with any one manager.

Would be good to get them in now. But better to get the right players in June than the wrong ones now.

Offer me a good player with a bad attitude or an average player with a good attitude and I know which one I’d take.

Did you see Lennons quotes about Griffiths, his work rate and how he never stops and throws his arms in the air when a move breaks down?

Doesn’t sound like someone who has a bad attidude, at least on the pitch.

There is another Open fan meeting scheduled for Wednesday 5th February 2014 7pm in the Celtic Club to which all Celtic supporters are invited. We hope to have the answers to the questions which have been sent to Celtic’s CEO Peter Lawwell and these will be reported to the meeting.

Ideal opportunity for all those interested parties to turn up, listen and be heard ….

Proudbhoy, totally agree, Balde & Pukki deserve a run of games, we are 15 points ahead & 2 games in hand. The manager is keen to have an unbeaten record & i see his reasoning but i don’t really care about that tbh. However will we look back in a couple of seasons & wish we had given youth a chance to get 10 games or so under their belt & see which ones will make the grade? At the same time they will be in the shop window if they don’t! We will not get a better opportunity than this as boredom is kicking in, i for one would like to see the team that played Galatasaray & Liverpool get an opportunity.
