Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

If we are spending £2.5m on defenders then someone needs to get the message that an equivalent quality striker will cost a lot more. It’s just the way football works. Oh, and maybe time to start thinking about extending Virgil’s contract, with a buy-out fee inserted.

It looks like loonball Chris Graham has a rival for his mantle of resident Sevco dimwit.

Step forward Bill McMurdo’s son – the guy who puts his name to Jack Irvine’s press releases.

And this one is a belter. Apologies if already posted.

“I see the fainthearts and keyboard munchers are buying into the propaganda that Rangers are in some sort of financial crisis. All kinds of speculation and fearful thinking seem to have gripped the fevered imaginations of the more timorous in the bluenose support.

“One thread on a popular forum even re-visited my quote that BPH have £50 million available should Rangers require it, once the club returns to the big European stage.

“Much ridicule has been thrown at this over the past few months. If those laughing knew the strength of BPH, they wouldn’t be scoffing.

“Let me reiterate what I said about the £50 million. What I was told was that once Rangers get back into top flight European competition, money is available should it be required to take the club on to the next level. BPH could easily cut a cheque for £50 million.

“Now for the benefit of those who are a bit slower than most, this is a Ronseal statement. It is what it says on the tin.

“It is not a promise for £50 million. And it is definitely not a promise for £50 million to help the club in the Championship next season.

“It is a statement that money is available should it be required. In essence, money is not a problem.

“Now if Rangers generate revenue streams and run a tight financial ship, there may be no need for an influx of £50 million. But a Rangers run in a prudent fiscal manner is far more attractive to investor money. And that money is there should it be required.

“What the club is going through at present is the pain of having to live within budgetary controls. It stands to reason that for Rangers to maximise commercial deals and generate appropriate revenues, the club has to be in the top tier and banging on the door of the Champions League again.

“Right now, Rangers is constrained by certain limits that come from the club’s league position.

“The club has to live within its means; it is that simple. Certain people at Ibrox clearly do not like this.

“But the reality is very simple and it has to be said: The old guard are not riding to the rescue with bottomless vaults of cash.

“The time has come for Rangers fans to unite and get behind the club – team, board and all.

“One more thing. I am not the mouthpiece for anybody on the board. I write based on what I know. People can choose to believe what they want. I read what I am supposed to have said all the time on forums and most of it is a pack of lies.”

At the begin of the season I purchased a season ticket (as I have done yearly since the days when all fans, not the chosen few, were able to purchase SBs) , thinking that I would be able to attend home games every Saturday. I have lost count of how many games I have missed because the date has been changed without any apologies to those of us who have paid up front to attend games.

I am sure that even TD67 would agree that pensioners like me should not be put in this position. Something the club ought to think about in future.

    Some postponements tonight.

Reading at home to Bazza’s Blackpool. Great head to head, scored 7 last home game v Bolton. Have taken them with Cheltenham away to York as they have lost only 1 in 20 v York.

Brentford in great form. At home to Bristol City…..but have drawn 1 and lost 5 in this fixture, so I will give them a miss.

Can’t see Liverpool losing, nor CP, based on head to heads. Have taken both to draw.

How much do we get from Sky? Surely with all our lost ticket sales & peripheral income we can’t be making money with such changes. We will lose season ticket holders at an alarming rate the quicker the powers that be get organized & create a tv company to sell our game abroad as well as enabling fans to download matches wherever they are for a set price any time they want. The tail wags the dog imo re sky & scottish premiership.

  22. derbyshirebhoy on

After an injury niggle Holmbert Fridjonnson will make a debut with the under 20’s this evening. I’m looking forward to seeing him on Celtic TV later as my first You Tube impressions are that the Bhoy may well be a winner. Incredibly it seems he can head the ball and shows good composure in his finishing. As always time will tell.

I notice many posters suggesting that Amido playing would only lead to along ball game. I beg to differ. Of course he does offer a variation with his height but it seems pretty clear to me that his real strength is just that – his strength and it also seems clear that a ball on the deck is much more to his liking. I would dearly like to see him given more game time as 5 minutes here or there is not helping him in my humble opinion. I can only recall him having four starts so far and he scored in 3 of them. Its sad and shortsighted to me if an obsession with an unbeaten run is holding back any squad player’s development now – even more so should a lack of preparation leave us short come the CL qualifiers.

I have however no issues with the players who have gone on loan. None of those were ready for the first team whilst such as Amido, Pukki Fridjonnson etc need to be tested now. Liam Henderson will demand inclusion in due course and won’t need to go on loan to convince anyone. Every time I see him I think David Hay.

That’s 3 well knarked bhoys and 3 empty seats for 2 games.

I’d love to say I just logged on but in reality I was hovering like Dixie at his best just waiting to poach the gold.

Actually, the reason I was home today at noon was to clear up a pile o fekkin rubble from my front door. Went out on a hill climb last night. Came back 2 hours later. What used to be an ornamental wall had been reduced to a pile of rubble. No note from the culprit. Went round all the nearby cars in the pitch black armed with my torch looking for evidence. Knocked a few doors. Was akin to trying to prise evidence from the Scottish MSM. Nobody seen or heard a thing.

  25. Did it not used to be the rule that games couldn’t be changed within 6 weeks of the date unless it was a genuine postponement?

I agree that the club have agreed to these terms being changed and therefore are culpable, I don’t necessarily agree that they’ve ok-ed the individual fixture change. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were simply told of the change. If they’re aggrieved it’s their own fault.

MWD totally agree this season more than any other in my opinion. Firstly we didn’t back the manager in summer transfer market & are left with only one first team regular & numerous projects. We gambled & then stumbled into the CL Group stage & it looks like we are doing the same again this year unless the next 3 days are fruitful, i won’t hold my breath & I think we seriously lack ambition re the CL we seem happy to chase unbeaten runs in the scottish league than aim high! The cheating by dead club & what have we done about it? GB handling of situation was poor, & the fat cats on our PLC bored demanding that efforts to pay living wage were voted down is a disgrace while they pay themselves £1m salaries. Wonder if we are getting value for money in that department when compared to Ajax, Benfica, Porto etc. We have received our usual soundbites about star signings etc, we laugh at Jack Irvine & sevco giving out misinformation to the gullibles are we much different?

I have haven’t felt as big a disconnect since the old board.
