Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Elbhoy,

Griffiths has 12 league goals this season.

Wolves have played 4 games this year.

LG has started 2 of them.

  2. Ellboy

He told his manager he want’s to go back to scotland, to see more of his kids apparently, he hasn’t started many since he told this to his manager.

That came from a Wolves forum, so a pinch of salt.

He is on the bench tonight btw.

I’m not saying he’s the answer but I think it’s off the mark to suggest he’s not among the first team at Wolves. He’s maybe having a slight dip in form just now, as happens to all players but it’s notable that he’s still considered to have something that sees him coming off the bench. Often with a good portion of the game to go.

As Gordon64 (i think) and myself have pointed out he’d also be classed as one of the required 8 home grown players for the CL squad and I don’t think that should be overlooked when querying out motivation for signing him.

No question, I agree all strikers can suffer a dip in form & if we do sign him then he will have my full support. I am just hugely disappointed to see us going after a player who to me is no better than what we currently have. I personally believe the signing of Leigh Griffiths will push Tony Watt (who I rate highly) further down the list & perhaps even delay the growth of Balde, Atajic & even Pukki. When better to give these guys a chance than now with the league is won if not now then when? Who knows given the chance, one of them may just be the answer.

    HH!

  4. Jimmy Johnstone had a few off the field issues – Didn’t stop him becoming Celtic’s best ever player.

LG has impressed me when I have seen him play. His goal scoring record is fantastic. We are never going to buy someone who is a CL goal scorer. Most goals in the CL are scored through good team play. What we need is a finisher who puts the final touch on a good team move. If LG comes then he can do that, but he can’t do it on his own.

Players who can do it on their own ? Maybe Ronaldo and Messi – can’t think of any others

  5. Looking forward to the Merseyside derby, the biggest city

derby in British fitba……wisna always,is noo.

  6. Leigh Griffiths starts more games than he doesn’t.

And even when he’s a sub he gets a bliddy lot more time than messers balde and pukki.

Ellboy.Forgive me for accepting Neil Lennons view of Leigh Griffiths rather than the nonsense you have been spouting. In Neil Lennon I trust. H.H.

  9. Two players currently plying their trade in the English third tier have both scored 13 goals so far this season.

One is a 23 y-o striker who plays for a club chasing promotion, the other is a 20 y-o midfielder currently on loan to a club who are near the bottom, and is their leading ‘scorer and most consistent player.

    Take yer pick!

No better than we currently have? Dunno about that. For one thing he scores goals. Our current strikers do not. I’d love to see Tony Watt scoring goals at Celtic too. But Tony appears to want to do his own thing from what I can determine, which is a great shame. I’m hoping the loan deal in Belgium will do something for him and he will come back ready for action. But ultimately I trust Neil. He knows all these players very well.

Neil has got more right than wrong that’s for sure but Hooper aside he’s not exactly got a great record in picking strikers. Whether his next attempt is Griffiths or another then I sincerely hope he gets it right this time!

  23. I have just read through the last few pages. You will forgive me for assuming we must have signed Leigh Griffiths After all, why would there be so many posts concerning a non-Celtic player?

So, if Johansen is playing tonight, does that mean he is unlikely to feature tomorrow or will it be one half tonight and another tomorrow?

I dont think it is that Leigh Griffiths form has dipped it is more likely because he has informed the club he would like to come north for family reasons that they have decided to look for offers for the player.I think he would be a fine player for us and would lead the line well. H.H.
