Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

For all the posters wanting a 6 million pound striker, could they throw a name into the ring so I can google what we might get.

Oh dear, now you’ve asked for it.

It is stunning stuff from start to finish. The only accurate thing to come from Jack Irvine was his description of John Greig as “Thick”.

No harm to Greig, but he is easily on a par with Derek Johnstone and Gordon Dalziel when it comes a shortage of brain cells.

Was Scunthorpe third tear when we got Hooper?

    ——————————

Hooper was a first choice striker and he was progressing up the leagues. No doubt a gamble but I hadn’t seen much of him before his arrival to have an opinion.

Griffiths on the other hand can’t even get a game for Wolves – Third choice for a third tier club doesn’t equate to a Celtic class striker. His level is Hibs as was Chris Killens. Also by comparison to other top scores in our league, David Goodwillies level was Dundee Utd & Michael Higdons was Motherwell. Shall we sign these guys too??

Mixu saying Pukki will come good with time. I think he’s shown enough (in flashes) to show that could be the case. Don’t think he’ll ever be a 20-goals-a-season man, but maybe he was never that type of player to begin with…..

  12. Reading on the blog that Leigh G has four children, that’s sure is a lot of responsibility for a mere 23 year-old. I don’t know a great deal about the lad except what I’ve been reading here.

Maybe not a fair comparison but Callum McGregor playing in an inferior team has 12 from midfield. Griffiths may have 13 but he’s no longer first choice. There must be a reason for that. If he was so highly thought of he’d be leading the line for their promotion push. The fact he isn’t should ring alarm bells. TBH if we were bringing him in as a replacement for Stokes (As third or fourth choice) then I could see the merit. What we need is some real quality up front that’s for sure but if it’s not available to us at this time or we just can’t afford better. Then we should be showing faith in Pukki, Balde and even Tony Watt before this guy.

I’m not saying he’s the answer but I think it’s off the mark to suggest he’s not among the first team at Wolves. He’s maybe having a slight dip in form just now, as happens to all players but it’s notable that he’s still considered to have something that sees him coming off the bench. Often with a good portion of the game to go.

As Gordon64 (i think) and myself have pointed out he’d also be classed as one of the required 8 home grown players for the CL squad and I don’t think that should be overlooked when querying out motivation for signing him.
