New Balance for Celtic

860

New Balance take over from Nike this summer as Celtic’s official kit partner and main sponsor.  The US sportswear firm have along heritage in technical products, like running shoes, with less of a legacy in the leisurewear market than the likes of Nike, but this move, as well as a recent deal to partner Liverpool, indicates a strong commitment to become a major player in the football marketplace.

Both the Celtic and Liverpool contracts have been advertised as potentially record deals for the respective clubs, although each club declined to put a figure on the value, or the contract period in their official statements.  It’s likely that a significant part of the contract fee will depend on Champions League qualification.

Unconfirmed reports put the size of the deal at £29m, cash that other clubs have securitised off to a retailer.

Last call today for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which takes place next Friday, 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite.  After the dinner we have a Q&A with Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne, Joe Miller and Tom Boyd.  We have Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein on the 50th anniversary of him becoming manager, and song from Patricia Ferns.

The object of the night is to raise money to build another school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa Hague, will also join us.  She will be auctioning an incredible prize of a signed Ronny Deila jersey, signed Kris Commons boots and match hospitality in the Players’ Lounge for the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow.

Tickets will be posted out over the next few days, email me if you’re still looking, celticquicknews@gmail.com we’re closing the book tomorrow.

I promoted a Jim Mc Cann tour in Glasgow around 1988.We did Croy,City Halls,Glasgow,Airdrie Town Hall,Jock Stein Lounge. He had told me in Dublin the previous year, that he wanted to do Glasgow, and being full of the drink ,I said,”Nae problem,I will do it”9 months later he phoned me,said he had a free week coming up,and for me to arrange it.I did and had one of the best weeks of my life. The only problem was keeping him sober before the gigs.He was sensational live.My favorite Mc Cann song,Boulavouge.Think thats spelled wrong.

Wonderful guy, amazing singer, and always went on about how humbled he was that the Dubliners asked him to replace the irreplaceable,Luke Kelly, whom he idolized.

    RIP.

PL seems happy to play up Celtic’s history (125 years of unbroken history is a good marketing slogan) and religion (celtic cross on the jersey) when it can be used to make money. But, otherwise, God forbid anyone remember and celebrate Celtic’s.

Just tell it as it is,there’s no need to try and hide what we all know is fact and leave himself open the anger of the Celtic support of whom have an Irish republican identity.

Indeed, then why does he not say what he means,to say that “Celtic has no attachment, historically or now, with Irish Republican identity” is wrong.

Look I haven’t heard the full interview, I suspect he wanted to nip the question in the bud, and not leave any potential follow up questions. Going into specifics about which IRA songs are about a liberating army and which are about a terrorist group / freedom fighters, would have left the NB executive checking the small print for a way out.

Maybe he could have phrased it differently, I don’t like the line of questioning, but if we give them ammunition they will use it.

Great news on the shirt deal, says so much about where Celtic PLC are…

Also I have nothing against Nike but that range of shrink-to-fit jerseys always got me.

Getting players like with Romny, John Collins, Jim McGuiness sourcing players like GMS and Armstrong. With New Balance on board hopefully the era of the shrink fit Jersey is over.

  27. Didn’t see the match last night but was stunned when I got news of that shock result.

Anyone who has played sport is well aware of it’s great uncertanties of how you can play well one day and be crap the next. Probably a delayed reaction to the big games against Milan and Aberdeen. Ronny will have to pick his squad up and get back in the race as the big games will be coming thick and fast in the coming weeks starting this weekend.

Even mighty Real Madrid and Barcelona suffered shock defeats to teams they were expected to beat easily in recent weeks. Upwards and onwards.

Great news re New Balance teaming up with Celtic over the next five years. Will give us another opportunity to try and make connections with Boston, a City you would think might have some affinity with our club, given the opportunity. Now, with both Celtic and Liverpool flying the flag so to speak, and with the latter owned by the owners of Red Sox home, Fenway Park you can put money on a game between the two clubs at that venue in the near future. If and when it happens Celtic really need to try and establish local connections in Boston and the surrounding areas, not just for the present but for future reference should American football ever get on a par with Europe, which I believe it eventually will. Should we fail to do so we will find that Liverpool will take take that mantel and run with it. Point being, it is not enough just to turn up in an American City, take the greenbacks and run. With Boston at least we have a chance of doing more, doing better.
