Newco new start but big question remains

347

A bit surprised that Dave King’s gunboat diplomacy saw an agreement with Sports Direct, which will see the retailer’s interest in Newco end next year.

There is little prospect of Newco making much additional income from this over the next 12 months, as this period is where Sports Direct will receive all compensation for curtailing the period of the deal. But a year out, should they still be around, they will be able to negotiate improved terms, presumably with a different kit supplier.

You can ignore the grandiose bluster from some in the media, this will not in any meaningful way narrow the financial gap between Newco and Celtic, the more important question is why Mike Ashley chose to take an early exit. Maybe taking a limited dividend over the next 12 months is a better bet than hoping for a long-term return from a five-year-old business. Ashley’s people will have run various scenarios.

The important medium-term objective for Newco will be to reduce the dependency on shareholder loans to keep the lights on. They are not a millions miles away from this, and with a premium kit deal it should be possible from season 2018-19, but the central question you and I have pondered occasionally over the last five years remains:

Is a ‘Rangers’ football club commercially viable earning £50m less than Celtic and trailing hopelessly in their wake? I really hate the ‘know your place’ sentiment, but we’ll not have an answer to that question until self-awareness dawns, and there is a realisation that second placed cannon fodder is the best they can hope for.

Aberdeen have lost players (sorry about that) and are likely to be weaker next season. Hearts Cathro experiment looks unlikely to make any sort of challenge, so the Best of the Rest opportunity is wide open. Dream time, for those at Ibrox.

This is being portrayed as a great victory for King, only tonight on the state news programme for Scotland, there was a sizeable report on this with interviews with several gente buying stock and interviews with others, I know Traynor controls the news output but this is so trivial in the issues for Scotland but it still warranted plenty coverage, Ashley is being portrayed as someone who has lost out no doubt about it.

I saw the morons showing off their purchases, Mash is raking it in hand over fist, the losers are the huns, Mash had a warehouse to shift and the huns obliged, that is the bottom line, king had no choice, they didn’t have the money to pay Mash, couldn’t afford another court battle, either could Mash for that matter, not that he couldn’t afford the costs but he wouldn’t have gotten his cash and would have been lumbered with wheans of tops he couldn’t do anything with, so the deal was best for both of them, but no way are the huns making anything from this, it’s just not going to kill them.

At the end of the day the media will play their part in killing them again, for that I thank them.

  4. Not much chat about Whyte allegedly making a claim against the creditors pot and the assets. If his claim is successful that renders all shares in Sevco worthless. Maybe MASH has realised his 10% shareholding is worth nothing and is cashing in while he can. Meanwhile who and how could Craig Whyte offload the assets? MASH is a money man, they all are. As the old saying goes, follow the money. There isn’t a hope in hell MASH has done walking away if it has left him worse off.

For us I’ve heard a lot of comments saying another treble and last 16 would be a great season. Well It would but that is not the bar I’m setting. Winning the league and qualifying for the CL group stages is a great season for me. Anything above that is a bonus.

  22. DAVE KING insists Celtic aren’t as far ahead of Rangers as they should be as he targets a Light Blue title challenge this term.

The Gers finished a distant third on their return to the Premiership last season and also suffered Old Firm heartache in the semi-finals of the League Cup and Scottish Cup.

Mark Warburton’s side were beaten 5-1 at Parkhead in September before Pedro Caixinha saw his first derby at Ibrox end with a similarly comprehensive defeat.

The Portuguese has the task of overcoming a Celtic side that went unbeaten in the league and clinched the domestic Treble under Brendan Rodgers.

But Ibrox chairman King believes Caixinha’s overhauled outfit can run the Hoops close as they gear up for the new Premiership campaign.

He said: “I think realistically running Celtic close would be good. They are coming off a high and it will be difficult for them to repeat what they did for obvious reasons.

“In footballing terms, I don’t think Celtic are as far ahead as they could have been – certainly with our new signings.

“Given that we were in the wilderness for four years I don’t think that Celtic did as much in that four years as they could have done.

“We are clearly behind them squad-wise but I really would expect to give them a run. You never know how the season is going to go and I certainly don’t expect a repeat of last season.

“For the resources, we had relative to Aberdeen we should have been somewhere in between. If we had been 16 behind Celtic and 16 ahead of them that would be right in terms of us outspending.

“For us to finish so dismally behind Aberdeen was very disappointing especially as we had made resources available.”

it would not surprise me if it was, the status of Sevco according to Regan is a matter of opinion, in Doncasters opinion they are the same club, Traverso at UEFA says new club however the media appear to have a different letter from the one received by Res 12 leaders.

    ==================

No the article that omitted the new club/company statement came from STV’s Grant Russell and his stance is he got it from UEFA media.

The SFA have a copy of the Traverso letter sent to them by UEFA on 8th June and my thinking is it caused consternation at the SFA and they wanted to confuse the issue and STV were the medium used.

Significantly STV Grant was advised by me not to publish without me revealing the key new club/company content of the letter yet did so in what I reckon was a deliberate attempt by the SFA to kill Res12 (and we now know why).

STV Grant could of course have gone back to the SFA and asked them if what the copy they received from UEFA matched what he had been told by UEFA media.

That he has never done so suggests he knew what was going on OK and was party to it.

In fact after the SFA AGM in early June last year when Regan announced Res12 was going to UEFA, Grant was waiting outside Hampden with a cameraman to pursue Celtic’s Company Secretary along the street asking if Celtic were approaching UEFA putting the Comp Sec’s face in the public arena .

Who told him Regan was going to make an announcement on Res12? Why was he trying to make it a Celtic v Rangers issue and deflect from the real target which was the SFA?

Regan has lots of questions to answer: its a million times worse than Dougie Dougie in terms of telling porkies, he and Doncaster for different reasons to do with LNS commissioning and assurances given to Green, personify the dishonesty in our game that has been uncovered. They and those dishonest men who were at RFC and are still in the game have to go.

  25. THE EXILED TIM @ 10:36 PM,

Very True…. in the light of BADA’S link to the tweet showing MASH taking control of the Webstore – which of course they did before Rangers Retail was set-up – this part of DCK’s statement is interesting…

“The club will now receive by far the majority of net profits from the retail operations at the megastore and webstore together with an equal share of all net profits from sales through Sports Direct.

Now “Nett Profit”… That’s an interesting one.

It is of course what is left after all and sundry have had a share of the pie.

Now the (Sevco) Union of Fans were the instrument, through which, the Rangers Retail Boycott was “organised”.

    Their beef…

For every £10 spent Sevco received 75p for the Club.

Now, written like that it seems a bit measly..

But it is in reality equivalent to Nett Profit.

So in layman’s terms they make 7.5% profit.

Now I’m out of touch with modern day retail but that strikes me as not bad Nett Profit.

In fact, say they wanted to improve on that deal… The current set up would have to produce the same or better than a 15% (NOT GROSS) but NETT Profit. No Chance…

    —————————————————————

For those who are mentioning the SMSM promoting this issue… the Scottish Sun regarded this “News” as Huge!!

Interesting when Donald Findley exposed Murray and the Rangers Board as the main architect’s of the Club’s Insolvency… that wasn’t expecially newsworthy, certainly not Huge.

Sevco Fans can buy last Season’s surplus Sevco Stock, from Mike Ashley… with an undisclosed percentage off a no doubt miniscule NETT profit… Is Huge News!!!!
