Newco new start but big question remains

347

A bit surprised that Dave King’s gunboat diplomacy saw an agreement with Sports Direct, which will see the retailer’s interest in Newco end next year.

There is little prospect of Newco making much additional income from this over the next 12 months, as this period is where Sports Direct will receive all compensation for curtailing the period of the deal. But a year out, should they still be around, they will be able to negotiate improved terms, presumably with a different kit supplier.

You can ignore the grandiose bluster from some in the media, this will not in any meaningful way narrow the financial gap between Newco and Celtic, the more important question is why Mike Ashley chose to take an early exit. Maybe taking a limited dividend over the next 12 months is a better bet than hoping for a long-term return from a five-year-old business. Ashley’s people will have run various scenarios.

The important medium-term objective for Newco will be to reduce the dependency on shareholder loans to keep the lights on. They are not a millions miles away from this, and with a premium kit deal it should be possible from season 2018-19, but the central question you and I have pondered occasionally over the last five years remains:

Is a ‘Rangers’ football club commercially viable earning £50m less than Celtic and trailing hopelessly in their wake? I really hate the ‘know your place’ sentiment, but we’ll not have an answer to that question until self-awareness dawns, and there is a realisation that second placed cannon fodder is the best they can hope for.

Aberdeen have lost players (sorry about that) and are likely to be weaker next season. Hearts Cathro experiment looks unlikely to make any sort of challenge, so the Best of the Rest opportunity is wide open. Dream time, for those at Ibrox.

Get involved with the Foundation

There’s a great opportunity to get involved with the Celtic Foundation coming up in October with the Great Scottish Run. Each year the number of Celtic fans who get the trainers on and sign up for this event grows.

It is a magnoficen magnificent thing to do, great for you, and you get to do your part for the Foundation.

    That’s nice.

I hope you have a lovely time.

  2. Very interesting how Radio Scotland are reporting the shift in dates for the possible Linfield clash. It can’t be played on the 12th because many thousands are marching on that day. No mention of those marching are taking part in an anti-Irish/Catholic ritual. There are plenty of places the world over where marches being held would only enhance the atmosphere in which the game was held rather than poison it. Radio Scotland is obviously run by those of a similar persuasion to those marching on the 12th July. They are getting worse by the day. Imagine Scotland being independent while the National broadcaster is controlled by their ilk. Doesn’t bear thinking.

  3. Re. Linfield.

We, the club, agreed to the new arrangement.

We should have forced UEFA to order when and where the game should be played. And why.

As it is now, we are the only ones who are being inconvenienced.

As for Paul67 suggesting that maybe the club should have “spoken up in advance” ………….. a forlorn hope when one considers how reluctant it is do so even in hindsight.

Linfield Huns…please explain to the sporting world why there is a security issue on the 11th and 12th of july but not on the 14th…why is everyone so effin reluctant to talk openly about this hunnish hatred towards Catholics?

  8. Like those of us who have lost a parent, we have many fond memories and funny stories.

My Mum died in 1989. She was an alcoholic but had been sober for a couple of years before she died.

When I popped in to see my Mum and Dad my old man would ask me to see if I could find her “stash”, so I’d look in all the places I could think of , without ever finding anything.

When my Mum was dying I finally asked her where she had hidden her drink.

In the summer it was in my winter coat in MY wardrobe and in the winter it was in a summer jaikit in the same place.

Still think of her every day.

If Celtic refuse to take tickets for Windsor Pk then no matter how much it’s dressed up it’s a cave in to these no marks. We should have insisted initially that the game was going ahead on the 11th or 12th.

If they weren’t able to fulfil the fixture then tough. It should have been moved or they should have been thrown out.Absolute outrage the way Celtic have allowed these bigots in Belfast to dictate matters.

  16. Is Celtic’s pre-season schedule to be ripped up and thought again simply because of Orange Walks?

Paul, How patronisingly dismissive of events that are the very cornerstone of some people’s cultural inheritance.

  17. Worst possible thing Celtic could do, imo…… would be to say anything that would be taken and used by the neanderthals to whip up an already horrible (potential) fixture…..

    …This is a UEFA issue…………….not a Celtic issue.

Looking at the first set of fixtures, we have Hivs, Hearts, Sheep and Scum all at home.

This means that should all 4 of them finish in the top 6 we will get one of them at home for a 3rd time. I await the fall-out from the Dhims if we are within touching distance of them at the split, especially if they end up with a 3rd away game to either of them.

I thought what happened post Takeover by CW would come out at the trial as false statements were made to retain the UEFA licence and evidence of his dodgy character.

That is based on the same kind of info that DK paid Charlotte Fake overs for. The info is mentioned in latest CU Podcast.

I am now convinced that the licence in 2011 was obtained dishonestly, kept dishonestly and that was dishonestly covered up by the SFA.

Same dishonesty apples to the commissioning of LNS.

All of that is bad enough but what is worse is no one seems to care.

As a society we are suffering from a loss of values that really matter as in reality reflects their abandonment.

  27. TAL; just as the memories of Lisbon will stay with your for years to come, so also will those of your life with your mother. Mine died in 2001 and I can still hear her saying, ‘You’ll know yourself one day, boy’ usually said when I tried to encourage her to get out of her chair. As my knees are now at the stage of giving me problems, I now know what she saw would be my future. You will have great memories too and they will sustain you on the road ahead. Remember your mother will be talking to the Lord about you especially when you need help. RIP.
