News doesn’t pay anymore

801

At the start of the week our man in Poland sent me a link to the Croatian outlet who interviewed Nikica Jelavic.  I mentioned the player in an article yesterday and recalled his earlier comments, which I referenced as background information.    This ‘news’ was subsequently carried by today’s radio and print outlets in Scotland.

It’s maybe a low blow to bring out the ‘Lazy journalism’ point on the day Scotland’s formerly-largest newspaper shed journalists, although the point is perfectly illustrated, but lazy journalism always found its place in the past.  The real problem has little to do with the standard of journalism on offer, it’s about business models in the old media.  News doesn’t pay unless you can tax consumers or bundle it with paid-for football channels, which is not a good thing.

  1. Hoopy Birthday to DBBIA!

Last vinyl I bought was “Nancy & Lee” by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra. Cost me a fortune so it did. But worth it for the mentalness.

SSN reveal that all Manchester police , at the football, will wear full riot gear on Sunday, for the 1st time ever.

A policemen was hit on the eye the last game at City ground.

If any arrests I fully expect a summit meeting to be called by Cameron next week and the Offensive Singing and Dancing Act to be extended to England.

In fact there are some very offensive songs sung at Utd v Liverpool matches especially.

Same here, CD’s are for all the old CQN’ers but who are still younger than DBBIA his Radiogram, and prized vinyl collection of ole Burn’s Howff’s reprobates, and pavement pirates.

The quality of the BBC scotlands highlights programme is very poor. Goldstar – you mentioned that they are only allowed 5 minutes of high-lights. If this is the case why do they show replays from every angle and then repeat it again at the end during the discussion. I would rather get 5 different minutes . Many of us can rewind or record the highlights and watch replays at our leisure,

  6. Happy Birthday DBBIA

It is very decent of you to have aged by a year almost a fortnight before I undergo the same transformation.

I have some old Vinyl upstairs, including a Michael Chapman original LP which I rarely listen to.

Was searching for a suitable song by Emmylou but, though she recorded “From Boulder to Birmingham”, she never got round to “From Chuckie to Carlisle”

  7. “Failed States” was the last Noam Chomsky book I read and was a critique of US interventionist foreign policy, citing the US itself as a failed state by it’s own definition.

It was a bit slow – ah preferred his early stuff.

  8. I’ll not hear a bad word said about Billy Dodds. Playing in a 4 ball ahead of me, he looked back and saw me ping a 220 yarder to 1 foot from the pin. He came over, shook my hand and said….”one of the best golf shots I’ve ever seen”……..”Dae it a’ the time wee man” I lied

  9. Quite the dark horse, though, old Hen1rik. One minute he’s challenging other CQNers to fights in public after over-indulging in Tesco cheesy puffs, and the next he’s expounding political economic theory and its influence on mass media.

…but for the best laugh – tune into SS1 Afternoon report where Jeff Stelling and a host of ex footballers comment real time on Premiership games.

“Over to you Charlie….what’s happening in the game at (wherever)?”

“Well Jeff the ball is played an…an..it goes..an…the defender tries but…an..it goes up an…it’s on his blind side…an..it’s out for a throw in….still 0.0 Jeff”

Back to Jeff…He stares at the camera and says “thanks for that incisive commentary Charlie”……

The viewers are none the wiser….

Sky showed highlights of the recent Glasgow derby at 01:00 the following morning (or later that night if you prefer).

The programme ran for 90 mins, contained at least 4 commercial breaks and must have shopwn at least 70 mins of extended highlights.

However, allowing for the timescales involved, the editing of the programme still managed to basically cut from the shocking Elbows challenge on Kayal, to the clock running down in injury time – thus omitting the Lafferty assault on Matthews and Healy’s attempt to decapitate Forrest.

Suppose what I am saying is that while Sky clearly has far better production standards, all broadcasters seem to operate of the same principle.

Celtic_First- BBC Scotland’s SPL highlights show is a particularly poor effort at entertaiment, I realise they are restricted to 5 mins highlights per game but the analysis and choice of guests leave a hell of a lot to be desired- big Cillian a few weeks ago, he was sitting there as if he was in a dentist’s waiting room.

When the highlight of the show is his jumper it says everything!

    ……………

They only show 5 minutes because that is all they pay for. The SPL would gladly given them an extended highlights deal, but they refuse to pay for it! Its a 5th string show, crap highlights, crap presenters, crap production and crap pundits.

Im thinking of the film King Kong when reading of the demise of Jabba. The line beauty (Celtic fans, Paul67, RTC , Phil etc) killed the beast (Neil most hated headline, gorilla in the room non-reporting, thugs & thieves etc) is most apt.

Just catching up if you are still around – I sold some CDs to Musicmagpie, but only doublers that my wife and I both had. Pretty poor amount per CD, though a couple of values were surprisingly good.

Watch out – they tried to say a couple of the CDs hadn’t been sent – I got them to pay me as per original quote but I was left with a bad taste and wouldn’t use them again; Magpie by name and nature.

Personally I’d get your cd’s and box them then hide the box in the loft or garage – that’s what I did so the wife is none the wiser, and it means I still have my collection safe and hidden. Much more value than music magpie or the like will pay you for your collection.

Also, remember to backup your electonic files to an external harddrive in case your PC gets mangled. I know someone who sold their collection of CDs that had been copied to Itunes then got a serious virus and lost the lot (along with years of photos that had never been printed).

Billy Dodds, of Aberdeen at the time, came over from a supporters function to visit my grandfather on his deathbed. My grandfather barely recognised him, but when prompted that Billy Dodds and Paul Bernard had come to see him asked of Billy: are you the b*gger that misses all our goals?

A wee chuckle and a bit of tear wsa Billy’s only response.

Dodds was an immensely humble guy that day and couldn’t have done more for us and it brought a bit of lightness to an otherwise dark time.

I don’t like hearing anything bad of him either.

  18. Hi Paul, Take your point about the ‘model’ influencing the media today, but think also the quality (or lack of it) has something to do with it. Got the JINKY – UNDEFEATED book for my Christmas and, as well as being a right good read, a most noteable thing is the number of positive, praiseworthy quotes that Erchie McPherson includes from the old media of that time. He even suggests wee Jimmy Sanderson decked an English journo for being overly critical of Celtic players over in Uruguay! How much time would you have to spend these days to find positive and praiseworthy copy in our printed media relating to Celtic, their players and their fans?

Who knows. Just goes to show, if you are getting beat in a cup game and have no intention of staying with your current club, you can break an opponent’s leg without any further sanctions being imposed. Do the SFA/SPL just make things up as they go along?
