News doesn’t pay anymore

801

At the start of the week our man in Poland sent me a link to the Croatian outlet who interviewed Nikica Jelavic.  I mentioned the player in an article yesterday and recalled his earlier comments, which I referenced as background information.    This ‘news’ was subsequently carried by today’s radio and print outlets in Scotland.

It’s maybe a low blow to bring out the ‘Lazy journalism’ point on the day Scotland’s formerly-largest newspaper shed journalists, although the point is perfectly illustrated, but lazy journalism always found its place in the past.  The real problem has little to do with the standard of journalism on offer, it’s about business models in the old media.  News doesn’t pay unless you can tax consumers or bundle it with paid-for football channels, which is not a good thing.

  1. Now that it appears that Baba Diawara’s value has reached a level where we are unable to compete, a reported 6 million, and rumour of NL ‘allegedly’ renewing interest in Jay Bothroyd ( FFS a guy who can’t get a game or goal for QPR) shouldn’t the opportunity to take Robbie Keane back for 2 months be seriously looked at? A proven striker with SPL experience even for a limited period would perhaps give us the required advantage when playing against massed defenses. Get Robbie in – get the points in the bag . Let’s take our time and buy a decent striker in the summer rather than scrabbling around for EPL and championship rejects in the Jan window. 1 further advantage it would allow Trap to view and evaluate a Stokes, Keane strike force for Republics trip to Euro championships. I know what has this to do with Celtic – but who doesn’t want the Irish team to do well?

Will any of you start buying that paper again on the basis Traynor is no longer in the building?

    ——————————

After all the outrage of the “More hated than…” story and many threats never to buy/browse it again, do you think many have actually stopped buying/browsing it? I know one person for sure who hasn’t and certainly won’t. The problem there is far deeper than Traynor alone.

SFTB- only the truly truly true greats, like our very own Leo Sayer, sing about Carlisle.

Who say’s £6m is out of our range? I’d say it is, but what a message that would send out to all.

re Keane, I think a flaw in one of your points is that it’s unlikely Keane and Stokes will play together very often without injuries to Hooper and Samaras as I think Stokes is 3rd choice in Neil’s mind at present.

I didn’t fancy selling stuff to that Magpie mob anyway. Got no time for anything to do with Newcastle FC after Shearer’s testimonial.

  8. I’ll not hear a bad word said about Herman & Chomsky. They were playing in a 4 ball ahead of me, they looked back and saw me ping a 240 yarder to 6″ from the pin. They came over, shook my hand and said….”one of the best golf shots I’ve ever seen, though undeniably influnced by the prevailing ownership conditions and general right wing spin”……..

  11. I’ll not hear a bad word said about King Cnut.

O.K., the tides thing was a bit over-ambitious, but he did hold his power-base together by uniting Danes and Englishmen under cultural bonds of wealth and custom, rather than sheer brutality.

That is beyond parody. Have they never listened to Traynor and Chick Dung arguing over who’s the cheerleader and who’s the puppet?

    Obviously not.

I guess none of us needs to be reminded of the PL’s role in the Fletcher fiasco. Haggling over an alleged 30 grand for a striker who has had a couple of multi million pound transfers since he left the SPL. I would be very surprised if we were to spend 6 million on 1 player. Being one of lifes pessimists I’d even go as far as saying I’d be extremly surprised if our borad were willing to spend more than 6 million to acquire the services of 4 players let alone 1.

Brilliant stuff. Some of the replies are beyond awesome. Love this one:

If this is true then maybe we have found the man who can not only save us but drive us on into a new era.

I doubt many would disagree but its unlikely to be the type of new era they would hope for.

re the red cards and suspension

Red cards for violent conduct transcend domestic competitions, suspension applies immediately. Hence Elbows misses Sunday’s humiliation at Arbroath.

Two bookings or straight red cards for a professional foul only carry to same competition (Big Fraser in the 2-2 game at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup, Zauska played in the replay when the prolific Mark Wilson did the double hunskelp in two strikes of the ball in 10 seconds. Papac layed oot and McGregor picking it oot).

    Happy days.

  22. We used to dream of hitting 240-yarders to within 6” of the pin.

Best we could do was whack a Glasgow City Council 5-iron up the 18th fairway at Knightswood pitch-and-put to within 6” of the starter’s hut window.

“Great shot, wee man,” he shouted. “Dae that again and I’ll kick the f*** o’ of ye!”

  26. Jabba will have left the Daily Hun with dignity!!!!!!. Regardless if he were sacked no doubt a huge amount of positive spin will be placed on his ‘unilateral’ decision to resign. Radio Shortbread will be interesting this evening – hopefully his fellow H*Ns – sorry Journalists will rip this pish out of him. And just in case anyone is sorry he lost his job – don’t be. A person who consistently fails to meet the criteria as specified in their contract of employment should be sacked. That is if we believe that a sports Jurno should be impartial.

  27. I don’t dislike Billy Dodds, I don’t like him either though this isn’t the point. The point is he’s just incompetent.

But he is no more incompetent or competent than a host of other pundits who can barely string sentences together.

I’m just not pleased with the quality of service my licence fee pays for.
