No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

You are right; it adds another team each for England, Germany and Spain; and 2 for Italy. So 5 other champions (Turkey, Belgium etc.) will drop off the bottom and we most likely avoid them early on as seeds.

Until the full access list comes out in a few months, we are speculating.

No probs mate, actually it made me consider what it was I was objecting to.

Agree with you about this blog, best there is, thanks to the diversity of opinion.

I’m paranoid enough to be convinced that that is why we are ‘trolled’ by the dark forces – can’t have Timmy having something light years ahead of Facist Facist, Sons of Spew, etc.

AND ………………… I see the troll has appeared. Don’t feed the troll!

Correction,bud-playing in a competition that gives our “haters” nightmares.

Takes them back to when they were weans-supporting a different team,btw-and hid behind the couch when the daleks came on.

Same idea. Watching us will give them nightmares. Women all over Scotland will be using an electrical item-with their man’s permission-to keep her happy, but with more functions than usual.

  5. Excited by the matches but terrified by Brendan’s preferred open expansive style. 3-5-2 might be the formation of choice especially away from home. Expect high scoring games at home, 2-2, 3-3 maybe even 4-4.

This explains the changes to the CL format. Disgraceful that 4 countries have 4 guaranteed entrants.

Beneath that, some positives for us:

The Champions qualifying route will remain (some papers are crediting Peter Lawwell for being one of the people to defend this) and the Country co-efficient will be changed so that a club stands on its own merits rather then inheriting a high co-efficient just because other clubs from that country did well/badly in the past.

May I be the first of many hundreds in here on CQN to congratulate PL on this great achievement, outstanding work, and I’v no doubt in my mind that it’s true, Peter Lawwell a great leader and doesent need flags to be waved on his actions, like a true Tim he just gets on with it, I’m humble to have meat the man, one of the biggest Celtic supporters I’v ever meat, take a bow Peter you are a leader of men, and we as Celtic supporters are proud and honered to have you, all hail P L.

    HAIL HAIL.

    *met *meet :))

I hope we don’t fall into the trap of thinking that BM will be the “easy” team in the group.

They will be the best counter-attacking team in the group and will cause us different problems than the other two teams.

Very quick on the break, score a lot of goals.

Raffael gets most of the plaudits, but the guy I like is Herrmann, who plays right midfield/right wing. Kieran will have to be at his best.

  8. Compare the £99 to the single game prices for the EPL.

    Utter bargain.

Barca, Citeh, and Gladbach, and worldwide focus on the Hoops.

    Magic.

Huns, weep, weep, weep, ya tragic fannies.

  9. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL

They have a cracking big goalie as well, the ex Basel boy Sommer…

I think Borussia will be every bit as hard as the other two:))

But the first order of business is :

    Bring on The Sheep!

    Exciting Times CSC

  10. Ticket prices if that’s what they are, was just about what I thought, but no doubt the Palastine Freedome Fighters will be dead against that price, I’ll pish myself laughing at them when they are standing up like proud (so called) Celtic Supporters and I’m sitting down, don’t forget to groom the kids now when it’s 3:15, time has no meaning when your mad wi the Buckie, well so I’m told.

£99 for 3 match package announced

Less than I thought it would be. Are they saying Sevco game (£49) is more important than CL? ;-)

  12. starry plough

I must take issue with your use of the word big – Yann Sommer is only a tidly 6′ 0″. An enormous full inch shorter than our soon to be number one bite-size blocker Dorus De Vries.

    Big indeed…

    ;)

  13. Sticking my neck out here but Aberdeen are a poor side. They have 2 or 3 decent players but I expect Celtic to hammer them tomorrow. In fact the team that started in Limerick would beat them.

    5-0 or 5-1 wouldn’t surprise me.

You huns wid say that… ;-))))

  15. £99 is a fair price. Exactly what many of us predicted. It will ensure maximum take up, which is exactly what we require.

The only ones happy with the £180 nonsense would be the hurting Huns and our opponents.

    Hail, Hail.

    Season book holder – £99

Season book buying game by game – £120

Non season book package – £150

Single non season ticket – £60

  18. Timreaper,

I expect Celtic to play 3 6 1 in Europe. 3 central defender, 2 wing backs a diamond in the middle and one up front. We need to stop a Man City etc passing their way thru us.

Surprised we are only after a number 8 box to box. We need said midfielder, a right (wing ) back and a Frank Macavennie type striker —maybe Moussa Dembele can develop in that player for Europe.

The CL changes not good for us —we need to be the best of the rest to make it. Within 3 years Brendan will have completely revamped the team and it could be possible.

However change will keep coming and we need to find a model for change which is win win for everyone. This latest change does not stop the EPL damaging the other leagues in Europe thru their spending power.

  19. KTF

Yes a case of wait and see but today’s news on the face of it, is good news. The play offs are designed to give the big leagues four places anyway so I’m not at all concerned about the automatic places announcement.

No wild cards as AC Milan were wanting is a huge boost. Let’s see what happens but it doesn’t look earth shattering for our future hopes of qualifying for this tournament.

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

Lets not fall into the trap that playing well against us (and that was a matter of opinion as he was posted missing in the homeleg) means youd be a good signing for us.

A better version of him would definitely help
