Odsonne the target on day football holds its breath

1146

Celtic’s objective for today is to add a striker, who is happy to take his chances at Celtic behind Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele. The target (as you will know) is 19-year-old France youth international Odsonne Edouard.

We have agreed a loan with Celtic having the option to buy for an eight-figure sum. There remains a complication between player and current club, Paris Saint-Germain, which all parties are hoping will resolve, but this one has the potential to go to the wire.

Odsonne is regarded by manager, scouts and coaches at Celtic as an absolute star. He made four starts for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season before off-field matters got in the way (which I’ll not trivialise, but we’ll deal with at a later date). He is a player who needs to leave Paris for new influences in a fresh environment. The move to Celtic could be the break he needs.

The initial loan period gives the player a chance to resolve any legacy issues before Celtic commit to breaking transfer records.

The manager has been impressed by Odsonne’s attitude thus far. He knows he would be the junior party in a three-man attacking roster, and that his objectives for the season is to press those above him.

In the coming weeks, our fit 19-year-old central defender will be joined by three more-senior team-mates. Competing with Kristoffer Ajer for fourth spot is only likely to be attractive to another teenage prodigy. I don’t expect movement on this front.

At this stage of the window, the chances of anyone near the first team being allowed to leave are reducing, but there are a lot of worried teams with >£100m of TV money out there. Enough to fund transfer fees and provide wages to unsettle the most faithful of stalwarts.

There will be calls made, you can be sure of that. I know some people at Celtic Park who will be happy people after 23:00 tonight, when the window in England closes, without any of our players being unsettled.

Enjoy your day, let’s hope Odsonne’s details are sorted and no one waves £50k per week-type money before our players.

One thing that you can rely on in CQN is expectations management.

I can think of one other thing that you can rely on in CQN………….

I did an overhead kick once on the byeline ( crossed back into the box ) on landing I broke my collarbone.

Painful recovery but I scored eight weeks off work which I duly made the most of.

The current rate of inflation of fees and wages is not sustainable. Where would it be in 5/10/15 years and who pays for it?

Also, too much focus is on the very top of the game. Its believed around 45% of footballers are on less than 1k per week. This is conveniently ignored in the ‘footballers are paid far too much’ generalisation you hear,

  11. Neg, If we spent 100 million, we would still be the poor relations of PSG & Bayern & rank outsiders to beat them in qualification from Group stage.

We have just won The Treble, are unbeaten in Domestic Competition for 53 games & have qualified for Group Stages in Champions League 2 years in succession.

Apart from winning the European Champions Cup, what would make you Happy.

Kev I have always had a soft spot for you pal but honestly it’s impossible to defend you anymore, you are being downright silly here on a daily basis. It’s not even annoying any more, it’s simply sad that a grown adult would engage in that constant repetitive behavior.

  16. What is the Stars on

Its odds on that this young French player Will sign.

Personally I find it an odd one especially if the transfer fee is 10 million with add ons one day.

Besides it’s one odd name which will lend itself to silly puns..I mean odd ones

  17. Unbeaten at home.. just fell short in Europe…. just the time to improve tea/squad. But we seem to not have tried apart from NTCHAM….defence is paper thin in reserve.. rid of Toure and Izzy, Midfiled OK but no support upfront. We were lucky to get through CL qualifiers.. .. why not try to be as good as you can be rather than as good as you need to be and no more. MD may never get over hamstring…it happens to young players…goes every few months or he nmay come back as good as before you don’t know.. but he wont be playing for a while. Same in defence .. Boyata played well in Scotland for last few months where we ran over teams..he was not tested… ML was jhopefully just a one off bad display and hopefully not a sign his legs are going.. Ajer will cut it in PL and may prove to be good .

exStrange that the audited accounts aren’t out yet. Record turnover and a record profit makes a delay more explainable when there are Champions League tickets to shift and clubs, players and agents to haggle with.

With that said, I’m still not comfortable that Brendan Rodgers didn’t need a centre half or that he judges what we have as adequate.

We tried to sign Coetzee so there must have been an identified need. Rodgers was on record as stating I have had to play midfielders and boys and full backs at centre back in these qualifiers. That doesn’t strike me as a man happy with his lot. Added to the attempted signing of a centre half then you can only come to the conclusion that we need one.

I’ll ask a separate question in relation to the accounts… do businesses normally budget on the basis of projected income or secured income or a balance of both?

Added to the centre half issue is the status of the recognised 4 possible picks. Ajer is a young lad recently converted to this position returning from a loan spell at Kilmarnock who made a mistake or two in the qualifiers. Rodgers comments about boys doesn’t lead me to think he is a realistic choice for a champions league game. Then you have Boyata injured who may or may not be fit for PSG, simunovic who has an ongoing knee problem and Sviatchenko who would have gone at the right price and no guarantee of him being fit in time for PSG.

Again some accounting interludes- what is the earning potential of a win against PSG and can a centre half have total influence over that? My guess is not total but there is probably a formula that could come to some arbitrary influenceable figure. Is it worth signing a guy just for PSG and if there is need the next two or 3 games. Potentially 1.5m per win and those wins get you a last 16 chance that last 16 prize is another 5 or 6 million including gate money?

So we would spend 800k on Coetzee and there would be potential for him to influence that prize money but the inteRest in Coetzee was primarily that the asset that he was would be more likely to deliver a profit on his transfer on than the income generated from winning football games.

What would the cost of signing an older guy on a free transfer be in wages and how much influence would that accomplished player be likely to deliver?

Incremental improvement is much more likely if you sign players who carry a high possible resale factor but they in no way represent the same success factors as experience where you need it most and that has been identified by the most respected football person at your club.

It will be very interesting to see the accounts and the outcome of the VVD saga.

Good to see we have signed a contingency for Dembele leaving next year and I hope Armstrong stays.

Just had a random look at the most recent Norway squad.

8 defenders named, 3 of which still based in Norway – 2 with Rosenborg (1 just signed in summer 2017) and one with Sarpsborg 08.

The latter is called Sigurd Rosted, 23 years old and over 130 appearances at club level (and 15 goals!), and he’s just broken into national squad. Well over 6ft.

    Fits the bill, you’d think?

Well, Celtic will know this guy and thousands more like the back of their hand.

Maybe he’s being tracked by lots of clubs willing to pay more. Maybe we’d rather let him sign for Rosenborg to see how he does then move for him. Maybe he wouldn’t want to come to Scotland. Maybe he’s slow as a week in jail.Maybe he wouldn’t want to be 4th choice CB. Maybe the intensity of playing in Glasgow wouldnt suit him. Maybe he’s got a suspended sentence for firing pellet guns at passers by..oh wait..

Clearly, right now, he doesnt fit the bill for Celtic.

But so many factors to consider and so many factors can scupper a deal at the very last minute.

  22. Deadline Day Throwback: 2013

Celtic decline to pay asking price for Heerenveen striker Alfred Finnbogason (causing mayhem on CQN).

He leaves in 2014 for £7.2m for a year Real Sociedad, then a year at Olympiakos, now on his 3rd year at Ausburg.

Scored 29 goals in his final season in Holland.

Scored total of 14 in the 3+ yrs since.

Five months later Celtic sign Leigh Griffiths for £1m.

  25. Celtic made it to the group stages in the CL last year, and this year, went undefeated domestically here in Scotland, won a treble, humped the Huns twice 5-1, .

And yet? I kid you not! Some just can’t wait to see the audited accounts, hahahahahahahaha, some will just never be pleased, ffs, even Huns are not that crazy?
