Old Tarts bring Celtic into disrepute on radio and newspapers

241

I heard a Daily Record reporter on commercial radio earlier this week suggest Celtic should “Do the right thing” and pay Rangers, in advance, for tickets for the game at Ibrox on 25 March.  I understand that last night another reporter from the same paper told Radio Scotland listeners that, despite today’s Record publishing a robust contradiction from Celtic, that he had evidence Peter Lawwell reneged on a verbal agreement to pay Rangers in advance.

Evidence of a verbal agreement?  Perhaps Lord Leveson would be interested in that one.

To be fair to everyone, any old tart can insist Celtic “do the right thing”, even if it’s the wrong thing, the comments section of Celtic Quick News regularly features such crazy notions, but it is alarming that the influence of a pernicious few spreads across such a huge profile of the Scottish media.

Peter Lawwell’s letter published on the club site was unequivocal.  Celtic did not renege on an agreement with Rangers, they are not responsible in any way for Rangers staff losing their jobs, indeed, they enjoy a functional working relationship with the Administrators of Rangers.

The fact that Celtic were able to inform fans in advance that today’s Daily Record would publish Lawwell’s letter “In a prominent position” in today’s newspaper suggests the Record acknowledged the legal consequences of failing to do so.  Despite this, no correction has been issued and the assertion that Celtic have reneged on a deal continues to be made.

The BBC, who have editorial standards well beyond those found in the red top press, are now embroiled in this mess.

While many Scottish reporters are busy uncovering genuine evidence of the biggest stories in the history of Scottish football, others cannot break the habits of recent decades.

If Celtic have legal recourse they must act but you have a role too.  You empower the media, if it was not for your (plural) custom they would be unable to lie about Celtic.

Decades of malpractice in Scottish football is coming to an end, this is our chance to redraw the map and ensure Celtic have, at last, a level playing field.

Do your part.

  1. Well done to RTC for flushing Regan out today.

The Scottish Football Association has confirmed that it will be investigating allegations made about players at Rangers having “hidden” contracts.

Former Rangers director Hugh Adam told the Daily Mail that he had been aware of playing staff at Ibrox having more than one contract for payment but that some paperwork had not been submitted to the SFA.

The governing body’s rules state that they must be given copies of all paperwork relating to player payment.

The SFA has now said that it will investigate the allegations and that it is close to completing its initial inquiry into Rangers.

In a statement, chief executive Stewart Regan said: “We are now in the final stages of our independent inquiry into the situation concerning Rangers FC. The report by The Right Honourable Lord Nimmo Smith is expected to be completed next week and will go to a Special Board Meeting for consideration.

“It would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this stage in relation to the details gleaned from the inquiry, the potential contents of the report or any possible sanctions.

“We are, however, aware of the most recent allegations made against Rangers FC today by a former director of the club. We shall investigate this matter thoroughly before making any further comment.”

Martin Signs up for Football Phone-in Show

The Scots football broadcaster, Peter Martin, is joining the commercial radio station, Real Radio Scotland.

Martin will be continuing his presenting for Sky Sports, but is joining the Real Radio Scotland football phone-in show, with Alan Rough and Derek Johnstone.

It means Fraser Thomson moving from the phone-in but continuing on Saturday afternoon’s Real Radio Matchday:Live.

In a Real Radio statement, Martin is quoted, as saying: “I’m very happy to be joining the team at Real Radio. I know Roughy and DJ well and I’m sure we’ll have fun together on-air.”

And David Treasurer, programme controller, is also quoted, as saying: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Peter to the Real Radio team. Peter will further strengthen the line-up, bringing his own experience, insight and humour that will work well with Roughy and Derek and really add to the entertaining and engaging show that listeners love.”

  4. Paul,

    a few thoughts.

    1. New look for the blog – excellent.

    2. Last few articles – superb.

    3. Game changer. Up until now, Rangers’ future hung solely on the shoofly peg of the EBT issue. However, they could win that now, and still be doomed. What first appeared to be collateral damage of the EBTs – how they administered the actual contracts – has become a stand alone game changer. While UEFA/FIFA may try to avoid becoming involved in a case of financial doping in what, to them, is a football backwater, they could not possibly stay out of a case of unregistered players.

While I believe that the SFA/SPL don’t want to take this on, higher powers should compel them to do so.

Should be an interesting few days, weeks, months……..

This would be a good time to dust off ideas about Atlantic leagues and the like.

I’ll tell you what will feel right…a big bowl of jelly and ice cream with ma tea. It’s Friday and The Hoops will be gracing the playing fields of Scotland with a combination of panache and thunder. How lucky are Hootsmon that such a well regarded organization has always been there to represent them with integrity and honesty?

With what H Adams has said ,I think we need to keep the honest fight going .

Farrygate was a scandal that ,if it had happened in the EPL it would have had rocked the game down south .

In Scotland ,one days news next days chip wrapper ,after all it was only timmy that was being s**t on .

Well when is it going to stop ,when is the line going to be drawn ,when are the SFA /SPL going to learn that those days are over .

Celtic should have their lawyers all over this ,this story must not be next days chip wrapper .This is a guy who was at the heart of that club ,saying on record that they knew what they were doing was wrong but carried on anyway ,what gave them the belief that they could just carry on and not worry about the consequences of their actions (the SFA )

Regan /Doncaster must now know what they are dealing with regards ragers and the peepil that run them and protect them .They have to realise that their reputations and integrity is going to be under scrutiny and if they are not up to the task ,then they should find another job .

This is a dirty business and they had better make sure their hands are clean when it comes to an end .

All I can say to them is ….you owe ragers nothing but you owe yourselves and the rest of Scottish football an honest , unbiased and truthful outcome to this sorry mess

What usually happens when a potential conflict of interests is identified, is that individual is suspended, most often with full pay, until the situation has been resolved.

    Why isnt that happening?

The guy could quite literally be spending every hour deleting important documents, hiding things, shredding documents etc

How he has not been barred from SFA HQ is beyond me.

  16. The last paper other than ‘toilet’ (I’m not that bad! though most ‘newspapers’ would be best suited for the same purpose) and a very local free one (in England) I bought was sometime in the sixties. That is how much faith I put in ‘the truth’ in them on any subject. I can honestly say it must be 20+ years since I even read a paper even in a surgery or barber’s. I only heard what they were writing from others and currently from the excellent Celtic websites. I refuse to enter any of theirs. They say in hell you can’t get near the fire for priests. Well, You will never get the chance to stoke them for journalists. Am I doing my bit? Concerned follower.
