O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

What pleasure does this sort of thing give you? You seem to have a fixation with children and porn – and trying to spread lies about what is taught in schools. Oh, and the term ‘virtue signalling’ is used almost exclusively by the alt right to denigrate anyone with actual values.

So here’s what I’m going to do. Any time you post I will put those quotes up so everyone knows exactly what you are and then they can make their own mind up on whether it’s worth their time interacting with you.

Oh, and one final point. Playing the victim whenever you’re called out for what you are and trying to elicit sympathy from posters who aren’t aware of what you’ve been up to is ancient even in Troll terms.

No, unfortunately not! I didn’t want to hassle him about it but maybe if we form a gang we can pressure him into it :-)

  8. Good morning all from a dry but windy and quite cold Garngad

I’m still angry that we are getting fleeced by away clubs and sky.

I know away teams are going to suffer by no visiting handsome Tim’s or Orc’s for Sevco away games, an absoloute feckin joke.

Yes I know I have options not to buy sky or not to buy the away games, but the reason I and many others get sky or BT (whoever gets the contract) is to watch our team and in doing so contributing to the contract cash that goes to all clubs, so now if we buy away games we are paying twice.

So all clubs/ sky prosper twice.

Honestly this cabal running our game are known to be liars but now they are fecking racketeer’s. DISGRACE and DISGUSTING are only 2 words that I feel are fit and proper for the cabal running our game.

  9. The Czech Republic game being postponed is a blessing in disguise, for a whole host of reasons not least last night’s performance. Based upon which those of us who thought McGinn in midfield alongside Christie and McGregor might be an improvement on Scott Brown at Celtic with the same team-mates will have to think again. Probably not fair on McGinn I know, in the context of Scotland’s set-up, team balance, and any other cliche I can come up with. Our disappointment with Neil Lennon in key games, in Europe, is influenced at least in part because we lost games which we really could and even should have won. Nobody would say the same about Steve Clarke’s team last night.

Yes, as they say, “there is no such thing as a free lunch” – someone, somewhere has to pay – usually there’s a trade-off.

I was initially surprised when finding out about the tax & health regime in Ireland. However such are the demands on health these days that I can see a hybrid system in the UK in the not too distant future, i.e. some sort of universal medical insurance forming an important part of salaries.

Covid has been a wake-up call for the world. It was not totally out of the blue of course, MERS & SARS have hit us previously, and no doubt COVID 2 is waiting in the wings.

Can our addiction to cheap consumer goods, cheap food, coupled with the demand for low taxes, free healthcare & higher state pensions, be sustained indefinitely in the UK? – I doubt it.

Scandinavian countries seem to have persuaded their populations that high taxes & quality public services go hand in hand – that will be a hard sell here.

Education in Scotland is now a dog’s breakfast, driven by SNP dogma – our standards have fallen year on year for the past ten. There is political indoctrination going on in primary schools, secondary schools are failing with grades being softened to mask falling standards, Salmond’s “never-melting” rock has been taken to the dump, and universities are in a state of utter confusion over post-Covid funding.

Being part of the sixth largest economy in the world with the Barnett safety-net, we, in Scotland, should be ten years into building a distinct Scottish approach using our powerful devolved parliament – that we are not is a failure totally due to the SNP’s fixation with constitutional issues – the Scottish people have been denied the real benefits of devolution.

A lifelong Labour member & campaigner until Commie Corbyn, I agree with you that the demise of the Labour party in Scotland was down to complacency & cronyism – we now desperately need a new left-wing party – whether that is revamped Labour, or, a new entity, time will tell – one thing is for sure, there has never been a left-wing marker in the DNA of the SNP – they were always known as the Tartan Tories – they still are. For all its faults, only Labour has ever delivered for the ordinary folk of Scotland – in their entire existence the SNP have given the working class in Scotland the square root of f*** all – indeed most of their new ‘converts’ could not make ends meet without Labours Tax Credits.

  17. Be great to have slotted in the Aberdeen match on Wednesday – however I’m sure it will be no go. Although the Scotland game is gone, we have other players involved elsewhere….Barkas, Elhamed Bitton, Ajer, Eduard, Ajeti, Klimala & of course our new boy Shane Duffy – are there any more?

    Aye indeed!

    RIP Johnny Thomson.

I heard a story that he played for the Scottish League against England, mibbe at White Hart Lane.

Scotland were beaten 7 or 8 nothing and the England team applauded, (mibbe carried) him off the park, as he had played magnificently in spite of the score.

    Embdy?

  22. I see Andrew Dallas has been rewarded by getting our game against Ross County.

    I predict honest mistakes ahoy.

  23. SCULLYBHOY

Thank you for taking time to post those comments. It is a magnanimous gesture and I do not take to mean that you agree, or, disagree, with anything posted by me.

Strong & reasoned positions are at the heart of any blog & consequently strong & reasoned disagreement is the expected quid pro quo.

However the disgusting personal abuse which has being peddled by the likes of SS, DD & FT, recently, has no place on a Celtic blog – it is an insult to all of us, regardless of our personal views.

  24. Greenpinta & Gene

Can I thank you also and refer you to my comments to SCULLYBHOY.

Gene – apologies for not picking up that yours was the original post.

  25. Am I the only one who questions my love of football when it turns into an international week?

I absolutely hate internationals now. Don’t know when it started but find it boring as eff.

  26. Sad to see what has happened to a once great site.

What is all this politics about, ?

Is it about trying to get votes in next election?, if so an obvious waste of time,

Is it to wind up Posters of a different persuasion, that might indeed work OK,

However I always thought it was our combined love of Celtic that brought us together on this site.

So do we have Celtic Supporters getting their kicks by antagonizing other fellow Supporters on non football/non Celtic matters .

That is the way it looks to me & as I say I find it sad.

I do understand that if there was a current Political incident or event, Posters might want to talk about it. but this endless commandeering of a Football site by those of a sectional interest is both selfish & shameful.

I’ll take a wee break as well but for different reasons than the previous Posters.
